Microsoft continues to showcase the New Xbox Experience with this week's segment focusing on the exciting world of Avatars. Major Nelson walks us through the process of creating an always-smiling, always-creepy little character in the video above.
The Avatars seem to be the one aspect of the Fall Dashboard Update to really cause everyone to become vocal. Some are mad as hell, others are impartial, and a select few actually like Microsoft's answer to Nintendo's Miis and Sony's Home.
Where do you stand?

My initial apprehension is fading, not half as bad as I made it out to be. Could be a nice addition so long as they don't start charging for clothes, haircuts or mustaches.....
Gonna echo board monster, as long as it doesn't cost anything extra it's something that just doesn't bother me. I'm also a sucker for any custom design application, even if it is a mii rip off.
Among all of the new features, this is the one that I'm most indifferent about. It seems unnecessary, but I'm not fuming over the choice to include them like some other people.
Looks better than Miis because they have more options. It will be interesting to see where/how they use these. I don't need to get into a lobby and hear 36 people burping at each other.
Pretty indifferent about these too, but I don't think people that read this site are meant to be the target demographic. Unfortunately games aren't all about the hardcore gamers anymore, and this should appeal to the more casual crowd.
I hope that new clothing options are unlocked with achievements, and not through purchasing DLC packs like we all suspect.
I sold my 360 a while ago for some quick cash, but the new Dash and the ability to use 1680x1050 via the VGA pack may get me to buy an Arcade later. Hell, they're only $200 now.
I don't care. I just want to know if I can delete it altogether. I'll probably want to putter around with one, but I don't want to be stuck using one if I do.
i really don't give a shit about this...I'm not into the whole avatar thing. That said i will probably still make one.
The biggest thing for me is that these avatars look way better than Miis. This is what microsoft does a lot of the same. They rip off something but also make many improvements.
I'm not angry about avatars, I could give 2 shits about them (now that I know they aren't required to be shown. I don't like the new sideways xmb thing. It looks so boring and unorganized.
I wish they didn't do this - I have a 360, and a wii and a PS3, and I can tell you - the Mii's are absolutely useless. They serve no function. They're like little plastic lego men/women, and they're not going to 'revolutionize' anything. This is just an attempt at capturing some of the wii demographic. It's a ploy.
I like the 360 as it is. It doesn't need Mii's. For that matter, the Nintendo Wii doesn't need Mii's - I sure as hell haven't used them.
The only way an Avatar or a Mii is going to be useful is in some sort of virtual world like Home for the PS3. And as a PS3 user, I will not get home, because it's useless. This whole thing is useless. It adds 2mm of depth to gaming.
i don't really care as i can still use my gamer pic, thank god. but the burping is really really stupid. and having the cutesy sound effects. my poor xbox is turning into a wii :(
When I first saw the new dash and avatars at E3, I was disappointed.
...now I've had time to let it soak in and I've decided that I definitely want the new dash (especially the new features) and I'm luke-warm to warm on the avatars.
The MS avatars look much better than the Wii avatars, but Sony's Home avatars still look the coolest. However, I like the new Xbox Experience (or the idea of it) better than I like Home (especially now that video sharing is gone), so while the Sony avatars look the best, when will I ever use them?
looks nice but of course it's not meant to be the meat of the xbox experience. the video also shows that gamer pics are still available (as previously said), so why can't people just take the free stuff and like it? God damn whiners...
