Getting that retro feeling with Metroid: Other M photo

Super Metroid director Yoshio Sakamoto is the man behind Metroid: Other M, and he wants to take us back to the golden era of the Metroid series. Sakamoto also wants to take this opportunity to tell everyone the story of Samus. We've taken a peek at her history -- mostly with how the Chozos adopted and trained her -- but otherwise, past games usually focused on the affair at hand.

Metroid: Other M is going to delve into Samus's character, something that Sakamoto has been wanting to tell for a long time, and will be brought to life through Team Ninja's cinematic style. While Metroid: Other M is able to bring back that retro feel, it also introduces some new things that I feel Metroid lovers will really dig.

Follow on through the break for an updated look at the latest adventure of Samus Aran.

Metroid: Other M (Wii)
Developer: Project M
Publisher: Nintendo
To be released: August 31, 2010

Metroid: Other M begins with Samus answering a distress call from a space station. Something bad has happened to the space station and it's crawling with all sorts of creatures, a number of which seen in past Metroid games. Samus find the Galactic Federation upon her arrival, an organization of soldiers that she used to work for before becoming a bounty hunter. The Federation answered the distress call as well and, reluctantly, they team up to find out what has happened to the space station.

Before becoming a bounty hunter, Samus used to work for the Galactic Federation until an incident occurred that forces Samus leave the group. Seeing her old comrades is a little jarring to Samus, especially since the commander of the group -- Adam Malkovich -- is also on this rescue mission. Adam was a father figure to Samus, so whatever happened to cause the fallout must have been pretty bad.

You hardcore Metroid fans should recognize the name Adam Malkovich. I won't get into the exact specifics as to what I'm alluding to, but Other M does take place before Metroid Fusion, so we'll more than likely see what we learn about in Fusion play out in the upcoming game.

Metroid: Other M definitely has a big focus on the storytelling, but Nintendo wants to reassure fans that Sakamoto's vision of that old Metroid feel has a large presence as well. That's why Nintendo showed off the game once again, this time plopping players about an hour into the experience. I played Other M for about a solid hour and can happily say that feeling of despair as you explore every inch of an environment is ever present.

The controls are definitely... interesting. Not to say that it's bad -- far from it -- but it will take a bit to get used to. Only the Wii Remote is needed, and players will hold the controller classic style to play. D-pad moves you through the environments and that's all that's needed as the camera will shift appropriately based on the room's layout. Samus will even auto-target enemies when facing them so that run-and-gun feel is still present.

The part that takes getting used to is when you need to go into precision firing mode. By pointing the Wiimote at the screen, the game switches to first-person view and you'll be looking at the environment Metroid Prime style. You can't move your body while like this, just your head and arm cannon will move with where you're pointing the Wiimote.

First-person view does a few things for you. Some instances require you to look around for clues you wouldn't be able to see in third-person view. This is also the only way Samus can fire her missiles. You can fire freely this way too, but you still have the option to lock-on enemies.

It's a unique mix of gameplay style, to say the least. Switching between the perspectives and aiming the gun takes a few seconds to get adjusted to, seconds you might not be able to spare when enemies are charging at you. Thankfully, you'll be able dodge an attack just before the enemy strikes in either perspective.

The biggest concern I've heard from fans of the series is the fact that you can recharge your health and missile tank whenever you want as opposed to restocking from the corpses of your enemies. By pointing the Wiimote up and pressing A, Samus will recharge her missiles to full and her health if it's dangerously low. Recharging takes a bit of time to perform and she won't recharge if attacked.

Personally, I don't have an issue with this and feel it offers more of a challenge. You could restock on health and missiles whenever you wanted after killing enemies in older Metroid titles. Now you have to be a little more careful and not go all crazy when engaging enemies, especially in small enclosed areas.

My main issue with the Other M, though, is with the upgrade system. You'll still be able to increase your Missile Tank and health with power-ups hidden in the levels. The problem is with how you'll get access to weapons like the grapple beam. Adam Malkovich agrees to let you help with the mission but for some asinine reason, he won't let you use all of your weapons. As you get further into the game, Adam will unlock your ability to use stronger weapons and that let you get to areas you couldn't access before, like getting through doors that can only be opened with a Super Missile.

I guess you can equate this system to how you upgraded in the previous games. Once you had reached a certain point, you would come across the room holding a power-up. Now you're just being given "permission" to use better abilities at certain points. Other M's way of making you work for better abilities just doesn't add up from a narrative perspective.

All in all, I was simply ecstatic coming out of my preview session with Metroid: Other M. It's a perfect blend of old school mixed with some fresh new takes on gameplay. This is definitely going to be one of the best Wii games of 2010 and I don't think Metroid fans will be disappointed.

How is being given permission to use better abilities considered a "Plot hole"??? You might need to go back and see what the definition of Plot hole is...

@DeltaBurnt- You don't say "waits for" you say "inb4" nub.

Anyhow, this is awesome. I've had strong worries and as it gets closer it's seeming more and more warding to those worries. Still bracing myself on the story though.

The screen shots make it look like Super Metroid Fighter IV or something.

Definitely looking forward to this one, but my current backlog will prevent me from picking up until late fall.

ib4 "waggle to regenerate" -_-
I actually have some worries with the regeneration. Not with the fact, that it is a regeneration, but with the fact that it can "take a bit of time". metroid is usually a "constantly in motion" game and stopping to regenerate can seriously change the pacing. Like cover system changed the way TPS is played.
Oh and about first-person missiles - so now to open a door you have to go to first person?

Since you've seen it and played it Hamza can you say for certain that this is the best looking Wii game to date? Cause it sure looks like it from all the screenshots that have been released.

The regenerating thing is different, maybe not what I forsaw but hopefully it'll be integrated well within the game. Bring on Ridley (Scott)!

Nintendo fanboy: Nintendo games are always the same.

Nintendo: We are taking a new approach with Metroid: Other M.

Nintendo fanboy: Why can't Other M be more like the old games ?

This Nintendo fan is pleased by Other M's refreshing concept. Yes, I have some concerns regarding the controls and heavy focus on the story, but I've got faith in Nintendo. Besides, there has yet to be a bad main Metroid game.

One of the better looking Wii games, FOR THE WII, no doubt. Yes, I don't care if I'm judging the graphics on the standard that it looks good compared to other Wii games. It looks like fun and thats what counts, with aliens and large environments about.

Is it one of the better Metroid games? I'm inclined to find out when they improve compatibility on Dolphin. :3

(P.S You can stick in Wii discs into your PC with Dolphin and it'll still work, its much easier to pay for the games and do that then get it through EVILNESS! or spend the cash in a system I won't be playing much, imo)

I'm kinda iffy on the whole 'getting clearance' thing for upgrading. Not because it seems weird from a story perspective (who knows, maybe it will wind up making sense), but because that item room music coupled with the nifty little item icon is just burned into my brain now as a 'reward' trigger.

The upgrade system sounds identical to Metroid Fusion. I'm shittingmyself over this game, I swear.

Also, I can't wait for all te people who bitched about Resident Evil 5 to see this and bitch some more that you can't move while shooting in first-person mode.

[spoiler-ish]

I think the upgrade system kinda makes sense for the overall narrative. From what we learned in Fusion, Adam Malkovich is a bit of a hardass. And he's disappointed Samus left his command. So for her to be involved in the mission they're on, she's probably going to have to agree to do things his way.

But anyways...thank you very much for the preview. The controls have been a question mark, but it seems like it's just a matter of getting used to them. Super Metroid-type gameplay in third-person 3D? You had me at hello.

I am definitely looking forward to this but I do have one main concern. The upgrade system sounds like it will be too structured for my taste. One of the best things about the original Metroid/Super Metroid was that if you knew what you were doing you could get item upgrades in any order you wanted (loosely speaking). This sounds more like Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission, where straying from what the order they wanted you to get them in was nigh impossible. What about the speedruns Nintendo!?

Still excited though.

I think narratively, the upgrade system in this makes more sense. How many times has Samus come to a planet, lost all of her abilities, and then gotten them back by killing a monster that--for some unexplained reason--has that particular ability? They needed to do something different narratively, while keeping the function the same, and this suits it.

I still don't really get your argument for refilling health and ammo to full at any time being more challenging than having sparse life and missile refills drop from enemies. I think you might have to elaborate that point a bit.

The health-recharge system--which at first struck me as a Halo rip-off--reminds me of that "will the cards to return to you" mechanic in Kingdom Hearts:Chain of Memories when I think about it.
At least it makes more sense that the explanation used in Metroid Fusion...

And is it just me or does the weapon-restriction concept remind me of those dreaded invisible walls in other games?

I'm still cautiously optimistic about this one. It's preordered, so I'm getting it no matter what. I just wish that it had the option to use the nunchuck alongside the wiimote, like NSMB Wii. Changing your grip and swinging it forward to use FP just sounds wonky. You never know, it may well work out flawlessly. In any case, I'm really, really excited this game. : )

If I understand correctly, GI explained that the events of Super Metroid left Samaus' power levels off the chart (yes, over 9000, shut up). You know how the hatchling powered Samus up before sacrificing itself? Yeah, that. Apparently Samus didn't use it all up on Mother Brain.

So she's asked to tone down that excess power until its needed. The excess power could also be the reason why she can recharge her missiles and heal her own health points now.

Malkovich and the GF troops apparently also have dibs on this mission even though Samus responded to the distress call first, so she has to play by Malkovich's rules.

The way I see it, its just a cosmetic difference in getting your power ups. A power-up would have been beyond the boss anyway. I do wonder, however, how long this installment will be. The Prime games were fairly long games for a Metroid game, the 2D ones have always skewed towards encouraging speed runs, to the point the game can be completed in less that two and a half hours.

Curious to see where this one falls. Personally, I'm hoping for a Prime-length experience.

ChillyBilly: I'll def say it's one of the best looking. Maybe not the best, but it's way up there.

Chardan: Loved the visuals and graphics.

Also, there is no waggle to regenerate. You just hold the Wiimote up and press A until fully charged.

So that's how you get "Metroided" in this game? Huh... seems stupid that Samus would bother listening to their orders, but I guess it's something new.

I'm still really weary about this game though, especially with Team Ninja's involvement and the increased focus on story. Haven't completely written it off yet though.

I'm really not anticipating this one, but the larger focus on the story will hopefully give this one a good leg up on the rest of the series. I'm not disappointed about the graphics all that much either, because that leaked intro footage looked sweeter than candy.

How the aiming works in this game sounds like it makes a lot of sense. If they required a reticle for aiming in the game, I am sure they wouldn't have been able to have the jumping and the camera views like they do. I imagine it feels a lot like aiming in Doom.

And some of the REALLY hardcore Metroid fans (myself included) already know a good chunk of Samus' past, due to the manga that was released shortly before the release of Zero Mission. Not sure if it's canon, though. I hope it is, it's good. Samus is suicidal at one point, and they explain how Ridley just won't fucking die. That is all I will say.
