Still, I want this.
Think I'll give this a giant miss for a while.
The first two years of SWG were great, then SOE released the most ill-conceived, idiotic update in MMO history and ran off the entire subscriber base while they continued to stubbornly pretend it was a good idea. The game's been essentially on life support since 2005 and finally is being euthanised.
They're running out of DIGITAL copies of the game.
You better hurry up and get in the DIGITAL line of pre-ordering that DIGITAL copy by putting down some extra cash for that DIGITAL copy.
So far it really seems like it could be a stunning mmo. Hope its not a let down as I'm pre-ordering the CE tomorrow.
And once again the Origin release is way overpriced. Those better be some amazing items.
The color stone could be the lightsaber crystal that Jedis use to complete their armament of choice - it might save some questing time, or allow you to customize a new supplemental lightsaber (who knows). It sounds like a swarthy pickup that will save time, but it doesn't seem very unique to the pre-order.
Galaxies was a good launch, and it was pretty decent for a while. Personally, even as a huge fan of the mythos, I could never really get into it (I thought it was as boring as sin). A lot of my friends swore by it however, until the dreaded update of 2005, which ruined the entire game. RIP Galaxies.
As far as Old Republic goes...I'm skeptical. When I previewed it at E3, I played a bit of their early build. While it was fun, what the devs were saying when I asked about end-game content really worried me. When I inquired about end-game raiding content, for all the people who will no doubt reach max level in a week or less, they responded with: "at this time we're only considering 4-5 player maximum dungeons".
Right there, any MMO fan knows that's a red flag. WoW is where it is now because it has so many end-game raids that required coordination between 10 or 25 people at a time (40 in Vanilla). It takes weeks on end to clean that content out, and by the time it's finished, there's more - it's what keeps the majority of the userbase hooked. Rift shipped with a pretty hefty amount of end-game raids - that's why it's gaining momentum in the shadow of WoW.
I'm worried that their lack of knowledge on the MMO userbase will doom this game. Right now, Old Republic's leveling content looks fun, but that will most likely only last around a month or so for dedicated users, then you just shrug while waiting for new content.
Now before you say "ALL PEOPLE DON'T RAID!" - that is true, but the hardcore userbase is what keeps an MMO alive. When all of the casual users cancel their subscription for months on end, it's the hardcore users that keep feeding the developers cash to keep the servers up, so that when casual players do decide to re-up in a year or so, those servers are still there to play.
I'm too much of a Star Wars fan to not get this at launch and use the free month as a trial period, but who knows if I'll be playing it after that. Fingers crossed!
Can't commit to a pre-order right now. Maybe once they actually have a release date.
I'm not sure if it's a better deal in the US. But in UK money, this is seriously overpriced.

Christmas ahoy!
"Let me get this straight. We can pre-order, but there's STILL no confirmed concrete release date?"
That is not that weird.
What a fucked up comment.
"I'm basing my admittedly under-informed statement"
Uninformed indeed.
StarWars: Galaxies was, from 2003-2005, the most amazing experience I've ever had in ANY MMO to this day, and I've played all the AAA-MMO's from Aion to World of Warcraft. Most people that shit-talk SW:G never even stepped foot into the game, they just go off of what others people pick up from online trolling(herp that gaem sux). While I would expect that from spoiled brat gamers, I wouldn't expect that from you, Conrad.
I am disappoint. (But who am I for you to give a shit, right?)
Look up SWGEMU if you want to play pre-CU Galaxies still. It's a private server that is still in development but it's an awesome work in progress.
@Hasney The way it seems to me, on the NA side at least, is that the game is 59.99, but you need to put down $5 for the pre order. In the end you still pay $60, but in a $5 payment and a 54.99 payment.
So, while I'm terribly sorry that I misread the sentiment surrounding the game, you're right when you say that I don't really give a shit when it's coming from you.
I haven't played another MMO since I tried WOW 4 years ago but I recently loaded up SWGEMU and can tell it's going to completely destroy my plan of working through my game backlog.
