Get your ads out of my Guitar Hero: World Tour photo

Despite the free world spiraling out of control as a result of bad mortgages and Happy Meals, Activision managed to ink a deal with ad company IGA Worldwide. Gamasutra describes the deal between IGA and Activision as an “exclusive mulit-year agreement,” which basically boils down to in-game ads in whatever game Activision desires. The first title to feature this agreement will be Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Of course, if having a Pepsi bottle behind your rock backdrop doesn’t seem like enough targeting then you’ll be delighted to know that IGA’s ads are updated in real time. Hopefully, they never hit me with a blueberry pie advertisement on a Saturday.

The ads will extend past GH: WT, but the next title is unknown. My guess is that Diablo III will rock some amazing arthritis supplements.

Heh. I don't pay much attention to the backdrops in games like GH and RB.

Ads in video games. Why do people still care about this shit?

Is it just me or does that screenshot look really really bad?

Um, because we don't like obnoxious and intrusive shit from corporate America littering the games we paid for.

Advertising can be done well, but those that do will surely be in the minority.

Not just you. The art style since 3 has been atrocious.
We can only hope that WT has lots of Axe ads place everywhere.

They announced a KFC deal before this, hopefully meaning 1) Buckethead is a secret character in the game (please be true, or 2) We will have KFC buckets to put on characters heads, making Buckethead possible.

All I'm saying is, I want Buckethead in this game.

Karazhan, brought to you by Redbull and Axe!

It sucks, but these games are getting expensive to make so unless people would like to pay $90 each, the money has to come from somewhere else. Why not let corporate America throw some money at game designers? It's not like anyone (**sips on redbull**) pays attention to those ads anyway...

Not like there are no ads in RB2... Sure, they are music related, but that may be the case for GH:WT.

Let's wait and see.

battle.net will have ads up the ass, but the single player campaign shouldn't have any.

Since the game already has rock'n'roll, I expect the advertising to include sex and drugs.

Give me Joe Camel or give me death!!

Like having a Fender guitar is not an ad, right?

The only time I've actually paid attention to advertising in a game was in Guitar Hero 3, playing a few weeks ago and seeing "Tropic Thunder -- Now Playing!" and I just went "Hey, cool. Tropic Thunder is out."

I've never seen these "intrusive" ads you speak of. I've never had a loading screen explain why Colgate is better than Crest or how Bayer helps stop heart attacks like I do when I watch TV. I don't hear people bitch about the fact that ads exist on the TV, so why complain about them in games.

Games production is getting much bigger and harder to finance, so companies will start pulling in advertisements for other companies so they can pay to make the game. Or would you rather have to pay 80 bucks for the larger titles that take more time in development?

To be fair, How is this going to impact your gameplay whatsoever ? It's just like seeing an ad on TV, but probably less intrusive, like a bill board on the side of the stage,I think the term "Mountain out of a molehill " sums this up pretty much entirely.

Did no one notice the bottles of Vault energy soda in GH2? I did, and it really killed the game for me. When I wasn't swearing at Psychobilly Freakout, that is.

I don't mind ads in games I pay little to nothing to play. They gotta get their cash somehow, right? However, if I'm paying sixty bucks for your new game, you can kindly take your real-time advertising and shove it up your narrow asshole.

Oh, this is assuming that the ads will be intrusive. If they're just passive ads, like billboards and whatnot, then it's no big deal. I just don't want to deal with advertisements popping up during loading screen.
