The soundtrack is arguably the star of this game as well. Absolutely mindblowing.
Well, that's a rather large claim. Considering the 'last ten or so years' would include the likes of Super Mario Galaxy, Psychonauts, New Super Mario Bros, and, frankly, a lot of other extremely high tier games, that's a very large claim....especially for a low budget, indie game.
Nonetheless, it pique the curiosity. I've bitten and am downloading the demo right now.
I would hardly say that a game with the exact same mechanics as other games that came out in the early 90's would constitute platformer of the year material. Especially when its creator (Shigsy) openly admitted that they could have added different characters to it but decided not to because the team couldnt be bothered making a new model for them, so they used Toad because hes near identical to Marios build.
I have no beef with Galaxy except it was too easy. You should have said SMG2, now THERE'S a platformer!
If he add Achievements to this sucker, I'd be willing to suffer so many deaths again to show some passion for it (probably in no small part to "Pushing onward"). If things go like with Eversion, he should expect a full-price payment within a month or two for my sister's Steam.
Thanks, Destructoid, for pushing this title into my mind over so many posts. It paid off for the developer(s), definitely.
Also I thought this was overrated, but then I am not one of those people longing for the 8bit days to return.
But lo and behold, now it's only 5 dollars and on mac!
Truly, these are marvelous times indeed.
Well, we all have our own tastes. Personally, I only liked NSMBDS a little and didn't like NSMBWii much at all (it would be been such an amazing game if Nintendo only had a fraction of sense required to include online multiplayer). Nonetheless, like them or not, they were both widely praised games, and among the best selling games of all time.
Lastly, I did say "and a lot of other extremely high tier games", so that would include SMG2, even if I did not specifically mention it.
Anyway, I finished the VVVVV demo. Hell, I finished it about thirty minutes after downloading it. It was a pretty good game with interesting game mechanics, but among the best platformers of the last ten years? Well, I guess it was my fault for actually even patronizing such a ludicrous claim by Destructoid in the first place.
If sales were faltering, though, I understand why he would move to a popular distribution service and a lower price.
"Like they do with a lot of games, Steam are offering the game with a 10% discount for its first week, but as I’m sure visitors to this site are aware, this actually represents a far more dramatic price cut than that! That was a tough decision to make, especially since VVVVVV is my only source of income, but I know that the original price of $15 was off putting for a lot of people and I hope this means that more people will now be able to check it out :)"
