Frankly, Sega's attempts to exploit the iPhone have been disappointing, to say the least. Needlessly expensive and steeped in inferior controls, ports of Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage simply haven't been worth buying at Sega's inflated prices. Shining Force for three bucks, however? Now we're approaching a decent offer.
The classic tactical RPG has hit the North American iTunes Store today for $2.99, and is already out in Europe. Given the fact that it's much slower paced, the touchscreen controls should make for a much more satisfying experience than a fast-paced platformer like Sonic.
The common opinion seems to be that this is the first retro Sega port on iTunes to be worth the cash, so you may want to check it out.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Anyway. $2.99 is still pretty steep, but man I love Shining Force!
Not many that are worth your time to download. All the RPGs on the iOS that are worth anything cost something.
I bought this late last night and I can say that the game runs fine. The difference in the game play styles has a huge effect on the emulator's output.
I kind of wish I had an iPhone now. =/
It's kind of sad that this game on the iPhone gets me more excited than anything about the actual iPhone itself.
Take Sonic. I have Gameboid, a GBA emulator on my phone. The control system is very similar to the iPhone's Sonic port, but I have Sonic Advance 1 and 2 on my phone for less than that one port. And I can have any other GBA game. I have Pokemon, Crash Bandicoot, Zelda, all on my phone for less than that one Sonic port. And the controls work perfectly.
The legality is questionable, but I own the original cartridges and that's good enough for me.
Well, we've seen no requests for this series from the Sega Addicts audience. XD
