Get paid for creating LittleBigPlanet content photo

Typically, the only rewards that a player reaps when creating unique game content is the enjoyment that others have with it. According to comments given to PS3Fanboy by SCEE president David Reeves, this is about to change with the coming of LittleBigPlanet. Reeves envisions that users will be able to charge for their content created in LBP.

What we're trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they will then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them Eventually, it's feasible that you might well see the first LittleBigPlanet millionaire!
Reeves then goes on to stipulate that content creators may be able to set their own price for content. This sounds great in theory, but I wonder how far the rabbit hole will go. Will any of you be willing to pay for user-created LittleBigPlanet content?

If you asked me 5 years ago if I would pay 10 dollars for Garry's Mod on steam I would have said hell no. But I purchased it...

So yes, if the quality is there I could see myself paying for user created content.

I don't think it's that big a deal. Basically, if I created a level that I thought was awesome, and wanted to be a jerk I would charge you so that you could play my level. I'm sure this will not be implemented by too many users but will be implemented by a lot of up-and-coming developers.

i'm just glad that it's not like somebody can just charge for levels... it has to achieve enough popularity/critical acclaim for it to even get to that level. but i truly hope that very few people actually charge for their levels... it would completely defeat the purpose if littlebigplanet if that does happen (IMO), though i'm sure some people would come up with much cooler idea if there was a lucrative side to the whole deal...

Bwuahahahahaha...

I predict that if someone out there does create a super awesome level and decides to charge for it, you're going to see a carbon copy of it produced by someone else and released for free.

I think what a lot of people are missing here is that the user most be approved only after creating lots of high quality stuff. It's not like people can randomly charge for there stuff. These are going to be Media Molecule approved designers that are able to charge money.

mxyzptlk is right. it's happening to spore already with people stealing creatures. and those are free regardless. if a price was tacked on with some creatures, there'd be a at least 40 copies for every creature that wanted money for it.

I'd pay a very small fee, maybe 1 dollar or less for a high-quality user-generated level with the expectation that it would provide at least 1 hour of new content.

And it would have to be well-reviewed by the community.

By David Reeves.

Seriously, would you make stuff for free when you could get a couple of quid/dollars for it? I know I wouldn't.

They said individuals may be able to make money once they prove themselves worthy as a "developer". They never said individuals can choose to charge people to download their levels. They also never said that we, the consumers, will be paying for the levels. It could be Media Molecule paying the "developer" for the created levels. I'd be willing to pay for a user created ad-on that is approved by Media Molecule.

Assumptions are assumptions.

No.

Why would I pay for something that I could create myself? And further, why would I pay for something that I could customize to my own taste?

Listen retards: READ the facts. Not everyone will be able to to charge for their content.

Only creators will be able to charge for their content once they reach a certain level of popularity, and its not even like they will charge just like that. Its a option in the game, i think its brilliant and if you dont want to pay for it then dont.

D sane: "Why would I pay for something that I could create myself?"

Because you're probably retarded and wont be able to create it anyway?

I would pay if and only if there was some seriously amazing user created content. Like, orders of magnitude better than any and all of the free stuff.

So it really depends on how well they pick who's allowed to charge $$ for their stuff.

Might want to a) remember this is Sony, not MediaMolecule talking and b) read this news story which basically says this is a Sony exec getting ahead of himself.

The new slogan of the game:

Play, Create Share.*

*The term share only applies to those titles not deemed popularly successful by the community's rating systems and have not signed additional contracts with Media Molecule and Sony to collect revenue upon digital distribution - at which point, the slogan is renamed "Play. Create. Sell."

Being a community based game, I didn't expect this and find it tasteless and disappointing.
Ploying this off as a guise to encourage better building is a dirty tactic. There could be contests with incentives to compete and win, easily inspiring talented and creative people... but there would be no monetary incentive to the publishers for that.

I'm glad the best C-blogs don't require us being charged to be seen...

I'm still not sold that this game is actually going to be fun to play. The platforming seems pretty loose and floaty. No matter how easy they've made the tools it's still a ton of work to make anything worthwhile. I don't think I've even seen people talking about how the game actually plays beyond being a kind of fun sandbox. But if that's the best it's going to be it doesn't really matter how great the content creation tools are, that novelty won't wear well with time if it doesn't have a solid game backing it.

@mistic - that's the great thing though, you can just make your own content for FREE.

Guess people aren't pumped that Sony is trying to find a way for individuals to flex their talents and get some money back for their time and skills. They are trying to encourage the next great game designer here folks!! It's like Sony sending out golden tickets for people to visit their video game creation shop. I bet if they see someone with extreme talent and creativity out there, they snatch them up and hire them.

I love how people jump to conclusions before seeing how it plays out in the real world.

Sony is being an innovator, a pioneer....I'm not sure why this is a bad thing. I bet a lot of aspiring game designers are chomping at the bit for the chance to get paid for some of the levels they build.

You see, most of the basement dwellers on this site will say no, without even studying the context of the content. That is because five dollars is a huge deal in their life. That's like, almost another value meal they could have that day! Sixthmeal!

I for one, love additional content in my games. If that means I have to spend five or ten bucks to extend the life of a favorite game, so be it. Not a big deal.
