Get Cryostasis on the cheap from Amazon today photo

Let me be perfectly honest here: I haven't played Cryostasis myself. My PC isn't up to snuff; you know how it goes. However, I have heard mostly good things about the (reportedly) creepy game, and Amazon has got a pretty sweet deal on it good for today only.

Perhaps the coolest thing about the game is its plot. You venture through a shipwrecked nuclear icebreaker and relive the memories of the ship's dead crew in order to find out what went horribly wrong and even alter history so that the crash doesn't occur.

Kind of an unusual premise, no? I've been told Cryostasis has its fair share of bugs, but the positives tend to outweigh the problems. Hey, you could do a lot worse for $12.98. Anyone here want to verify the game's radness (or lack thereof)?

Sounds like a sweet deal, and I would've done it if the game were for console. Sadly, my PC is going on 4 years old and I'm just not into PC titles as much as I used to be.

I'll tell you what's rad--that headline image. I love me some Space Punch-Out!!

Ooh, very tempting. Can anyone shed some light on the severity of the bugs?

My PC is pretty hardcore, if I say so myself. (Specs are in my blog, if anyone cares) The demo managed to bring it to a standstill on my first enemy encounter. The graphics look like a nice coat of paint on a rather dated engine, and it has some interesting mechanics behind it for sure. But I can run Crysis at near-max settings, and could not do the same on this game. Anyone else know of a patch that fixes ridiculously awful framerates?

It's pretty, it's extremely interesting story wise, but even with my honking monster of a machine it crashes a lot. Not just crash to desktops either. Full on blue screens of death. As such, as much as I want to, I can't recommend it.

It's an amazing game, one of the best in recent years. I had no problem with it - and I played the Russian version at the beggining of the year, when no patch was available yet.
I saw from some videos that the English version has shit voice acting, unfortunately.

I played the game when it first came out. It's got a very strange atmosphere, and I like it! My friend couldn't even run the demo, so maybe it's because he was using Vista? But from my experience, it ran pretty good on a 8800 GTS, Core 2 Quad Q6600, Windows XP SP3 with some minor framerate drops. Oh and there was a part where I kept dying, and each time I retry the item or weapon wasn't there where it's supposed to be so I had to restart from my last save point for it to appear. It's no biggie since it could be fixed through a patch. It would be a biggie if the player didn't know that, and the item/weapon would be needed to progress in the game.

I've played it. It's actually a very immersive and interesting game. My only issue was slowdowns, the game is really badly optimized for most people, especially when the Phys-X physics are used by pretty much everything (water, icicles, etc.) So it looks really nice, but it can bring even a powerful rig to its knees. If you do buy it, make sure you've got a beastly computer. My Geforce 9800 and Penntium 4 3.4 GhZ, 2GB RAM PC handled it okay at first but the slowdowns became unbearable and I had to stop playing. :( If they ever update it to run better I'll give it another go.

Great game if you can run it. I had to throw in my old 9600 gt along with my 9800 to get the physx running smooth. Once that worked out, I finished the game just fine. I did like the final boss alot, interesting designs.

Sounds like it crashes a lot. I don't know if my PC would be up for this.

I'd say that similar gamesto some extend would be the Penumbra series and Bioshock, and both of those I enjoyed more(and I really didn't like Bioshock, but stuck through it at least).

The "horror" elements in Cryostasis I thought were too predictable therefore not threatening, and the performance was bad even with a physX dedicated card. I can't remember whether the voice acting was well done or not though..

Played it a while ago. The graphics are pretty nice. Gameplay is very good. I wouldn't call it a full-fledged typical horror game - it's more like a darker version of Bioshock, with a Penumbra feeling and a The Thing-ish setting. The game has some bugs and glitches (nothing too serious - it only crashed once on me) but I really enjoyed playing it. Would I recommend it? Yes, I would. It's definitely worth checking out if you have a good PC.
