Get comfy: Assassin's Creed II has 3 hours of cutscenes photo

Check out the BBFC's classification on the upcoming game Assassin's Creed II. They're saying that there's 3 hours of cutscenes included.

When submitted to the BBFC the linear elements within the work had a running time (eg cut scenes) of 181m 30s.

Oh, and there's a 1 minute and 30 second trailer for the Avatar game in there as well.

I'm not out to say that 3 hours of cutscenes is a bad thing. And knowing Ubisoft and the brand, I'd bet they're going to be 3 hours of pretty damned good cutscenes. I just hope that the game play time will compare favorably. In other words, I don't mind watching, but I want more playing than watching.

The BBFC would normally list a run time, but they don't do that for videogames.

Speaking of cutscenes, come back in a few minutes.

As long as they end up fucking explaining stuff for once, I'll be content.

Man I hope this game is good, the first had sooo much potential, like a lot of Ubi games. Just like Far Cry 2 and Prince of Persia, and then they just go nowhere.

The cutscenes from Assassin's Creed were boring about 75% of the time and usually involved me running around in small circles to amuse myself while a character prattled on for 5 minutes.

Hopefully, they've improved.

Sounds almost as bad as MGS2. That was almost an interactive movie.

@Cacophony

True that; I'd keep popping my hand blade out and back in because the "shnnk" noise was mildly entertaining for some retarded reason. Stupid game...so dull.

Somebody's a Kojima fan... Wouldn't it be funny if the total cutscenes time is longer than the actual gameplay time?

Isn't player interaction the whole freaking point of a video game?

Hmmm.... Interesting, the cutscenes will be half of what the last game was.

Lord, cutscenes will always be the worst way to tell a story in a game. If I wanted to watch a movie I would do that. Game developers need to step up and realize that they aren't Hollywood and games aren't movies. I don't play games so that I have to sit and listen to characters rabble on about crap that should be seamlessly explained while I PLAY the GAME. If I go 10 or more minutes without actually doing anything then the developers are doing it wrong.

Is that really necessary? No one played the first game for the cut scenes or the story. There definitely should be more playing than watching - watching should be less than 5% of cumulative playtime in a game like this. Even if you create a lousy, incomplete movie, cut it up and put a fun game in between the scenes, a game isn't a movie and a movie isn't a game.

I enjoyed the cut scenes in the first AC. But only because a lot of the time you had just enough freedom of movement to make Altair look like a right twat by spinning around and trying to dry hump people.

That coupled with my own commentary is about the only time my wife has been entertained whilst watching me play a game.

Three hours is nothing, babies. Half of MGS4 is cutscenes. But they're awesome cutscenes

If the story was good, I wouldn't mind. 3 hours is still long though, considering the game will probably only be 10 hours long.

Hey guys bear in mind that in the last game the cutscenes were interactive that you could runaround and do shit while your mark was prattling on about their unique thing. I'm okay with some cutscenes being like this. I'm not a fan of getting 20 minute long scenes that are basically story exposition.

How did they manage to pull that off without the "magic" of Blu Ray??

To all the uneducated fags, the cutscenes aren't pre-render but made by the superawesomefudge engine "Anvil" (ie. just like the first game) and it's said to have 20 hours of hidden blade stabbing never mind all the meaning full collection and side quests.

Calling people "uneducated fags" makes you sound intelligent and isn't offensive to anyone. It is a proper way to comment on something in a civil manner!

I beat MGS4 5 times, I think I can handle a measly 3 hours of cutscenes. I'm pretty sure MGS ranged between 4 and 5 hours of them. Hell, one alone lasted an hour and a half. As long as they are well done.

AC1 is hardly replayable because the cutscenes are not skippable.

Please make it so.
Arkhon's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/22/2009 13:47

Yeah, what agentgray said. AC1 is impossible to replay because it's impossible to skip the cutscenes that come at the beginning of everything. Oh, you just want to run around stabbing people in Acre? Too bad, you have to sit and watch this cutscene for ten minutes, then run all the way to the horse, then ride the horse to the Kingdom, then skip to Acre, then make your way inside before you can have any real fun.

people should stop complaining and just enjoying what developers work to make us happy, if you dont like that dont play it
Solid Squirrel's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/22/2009 14:02

I remember the day when people would complain that a game had no story or very little in the way of cutscenes, and merely an ending that just said "You win" or "Congraturations" (misspell intended). Now everyone lets out a big groan whenever there's a cutscene over 2 minutes.

There's no pleasing anyone.
Timmeh's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/22/2009 14:59

@Solid Squirrel

Maybe because those people would like to play through the story of a game, instead of playing a bit of game to unlock a little movie, then playing a bit more and getting another. Cutscenes are frequently used to as an effort saving device and given the technology available to developers there's not really any excuse for it.

I know some people are going to disagree with me here, but I enjoyed the original Assassin's Creed primarily for the gameplay. Actually, I only enjoyed the original because of the gameplay.

I have a lifelong interest in the Crusades and happen to know a fair bit about the time-period in the region. I enjoyed wandering around the architectural reconstructions and, of course, carefully planning and executing missions. I did not enjoy the flimsy plot or the cut-scenes.

Now, maybe Assassin's Creed II will be a completely different game and I will be far more drawn to the core storyline. Either way, I hope they at least have enough sense to make the cut-scenes skippable.

On a side note, I am someone who very much enjoys strong storytelling and a well-written script. This is why I find myself skipping through almost all rendered cut-scenes ever created, since they have neither. In-game cut-scenes, on the other hand, tend to have a higher chance of remaining relevant and interesting (just my opinion).

I don't mind as long they don't pull that dick move from the last game and force you to watch every cutscene from every angle in order to get achievements.
