Germany is now Europe's biggest game market photo

Despite being one of the most inhospitable game markets in Europe, ban-friendly Germany has somehow taken over the United Kingdom to become Europe's biggest. Yep, the country that invented the term "killer games" and bans everything it can get away is now on top of the PAL mountain.

Germany has slipped into first place thanks to a 20% decline in year-on-year software sales in the UK for the first half of 2009. It's Britain's decline and not Germany's growth that has led to the change in places. Germany itself has boasted no real change to its market.

Even though this is thanks to the UK's sales drop, it's still weird to here that a nation with such a backwards view of videogames could be such an influential market. It's quite sad too, because this simply hammers home the fact that publishers need to pander to Germany's childish demands for edited content. I wish the industry could freeze Germany out until it decided to grow up.

It always ends up being this way: People will want what they can't have, and the same holds true for video games. Even so, it's still funny how the one most strict countries also has the largest European market. It's just too bad they see games not as a way that helps their economy (Since they definitely don't view games as art), but as "killer games."

You'd think they'd be okay with the money at least, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I hope this doesn't get any worse than it already is.

Killing the German videogame market would only be more effective because it's so large.

Iam german and a avid gamer, but thinking about germanys new role as europes bigest gaming market and maybe its new ability to affect foreign developers in game making/germans rating system, gives me a headache! (sorry for my bad english)

Might also have to do something with the fact, that my lovely Germany has about 20 Million more people in it than the UK. Just a thought.
Kinda makes sense that the country with the biggest population also represents the biggest market. That we only claimed that spot now should show you, how little games are still accepted here.
