Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Last week, we told you about the German group attempting a modern-day book burning by having people bring in their violent videogames and toss them into the garbage. The Action Alliance believes that videogames are the root of all violent acts and it will all magically go away by having these evil games thrown away.

The game dumping event took place this past Saturday and a total of three games and one CD were tossed into the garbage. One was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PS2, one was (what looks like) Battlefield and the third game was Small Soldiers for the Game Boy.

The video above is a news report about the event and dramatically shows a couple of kids tossing said games into the dumpster. Here's another news report that features more exaggerations. Someone also recorded the whole dumping of the games and you can see the cameraman making the kids throw the games in a few times. Here's another video of all the games for laughs.

As you can see, this event was a huge failure. As some of you noted in the original story, this group was organized by parents of the kids that were killed in a shooting in the same city. The shooter was a fan of Counter-Strike and this, to the parents, automatically meant that there's a link between violent games and violent behavior.

These parents are grieving, but this is not the way to go about it. Getting people to toss their games that they bought with their hard earned money (games in Germany are ridiculously priced) and creating a big show about it won't work. Educating your kids, being involved in their lives and teaching them the difference between right and wrong, that's how you make sure your kids don't end up as giant f**k ups.

So..they tried this in Germany. Uh huh. That failboat originally sailed in the early 40's, then a lotta folks died, and the United States dropped bombs. Did they really think people wouldn't correlate this "book burning" with the Reich?

I'm looking forward to when our generation enters power, so that the same backwards irrationalness that proclaimed rock and roll as a societal danger 40 years ago is similarly eradicated.

Stupid grieving parents. Not only did they go about this the wrong way, they made themselves look like morons. Worse yet, some of these parents' dead children probably are gamers and are probably rolling in their graves in embarassment.

And now you are trying to convince me that Germany has expelled all the Nazi ideology and stuff. They were burning books and now they are burning games. They just need to try harder...

Would be funny if it didn't affect me. But I love the argument of the blond woman in the title video. "It's not right for children to get their hands on software that was created by the military to lower the inhibition threshold of soldiers but is now sold as games." Haven't heard that one in a while...

Goes to show these people almost never have any clue about what they are talking...

HAHA!!

I'm sorry but this, this is what I live for. Watching idiots get put in their place, being shut up, and overall (hopefully) being embarassed into rethinking their stupidity.

Sadly that rarely ever happens. :(

I'm from Germany and i have mixed feelings about this.

First of all i'm happy, that no on responded to their mordern book burning. Seems we learned something from our history after all.

On the other hand i can't really blame those people for their actions.
Loosing you child to a school shooting must be the most horrible thing that can happen to someone.
Even if it's the wrong action, if it helps them get over their pain, let them burn some games.

On a side note: the official page of these people states that they got to talk with some gamers and that everyone was respectful with each other.
They say although not many games were dumped, it was a good thing to talk to the gamers.

About the loss of their kids;

Okay...I'll be less harsh. Especially the parents who raised the shooters will never admit, nor want to hear, that they raised a killer. And vice versa I'm almost completely sure no grieving parent wants to, or even has the nerve to, call the killers parents out on piss poor parenting/environment/etc.

Damn. Actually now I almost feel bad there wasn't a bigger turn out. Or at least a few pity hugs thrown their way.

No sympathy for them whatsoever, and here's why.

If their child had died in a car accident that wasn't their fault, they wouldn't be asking that people torch their cars. If the accident was due to drunk driving, they wouldn't ask people to round up their liquor cabinets and destroy them. And I somehow doubt that if their kid had been fat and died of, say, sleep apnea, they'd call for everyone to burn their Twinkies and biscuits and so on.

These people picked games because they were an easy target, and because they're among the morons who still believe that video games - regardless of whether or not the kid has an involved family, or a strong moral fiber - somehow cause this random and intense spike in violent tendency. Put plainly, they're idiots who have no interest in educating themselves.

I feel sorry for the kid and I *understand* that they're grieved, but I don't *care*. Not even grieving in an excuse for stupid.

Even though I live in Germany this website was the first place I heard about the modern Day Book Burning.... they maybe should have advertised the event a little bit more....

It is correct that certain types of Games shouldn´t be available to minors (here comes a but) but in my opinion the parents are to blame....
parents have to look after their children. When I was young and bashed in some neighbour´s window and the neighbour caught me I would get a ding around the ear from him and afterwards the wraith of my mother would engulf me. Nowadays
it´s all about lawyers and how certain types of entertainment are making you violent and bloodthirsty...

I think parents should be aware of their duty to look after their children and burning or otherwise distroying forms of media they deem dangerous is not one of them.

Flaw in your argument. None of those things, except maybe drunk driving, is a product of a human action against another human which is far more traumatizing than sleep apnea. And who's to say if it were drunk driving they wouldn't have been roused up about liquor and driving?

I'm not saying they're not picking games because they're an easy target. That's a big "Duhr!" I'm pretty sure we all here can agree on that.

But to say your lack of sympathy for their stupidity stems from some biased that wouldn't have proven itself evident in a nonconfrontational death isn't entirely logical. A confrontational death would've definitely pushed them over the edge.

It'd make more sense to say they have a bias and leave it at that. I mean, again, that's obvious consensus we've all come to.

And a lack of education doesn't make them idiots. A lack of reason does. What's there to learn?

Why am I even talking so much? I need sleep. Fucking graveyard shifts.

Again, false information are being spread by those news reports: it is claimed that vioklent games are made by the military and are afterwoods released for everybody in order to make violent behaviour more easy? Who the hell comes up with that stuff? (The woman who is interviewed in the report above actually states this)

Yup, destroy violent games. I'm sure the killers burst into the schools lobbing discs at peoples heads and using gameboy carts like shurikens.

Why do these people never want to ban the guns, or make weapon ownership rules tougher?

The problem nowadays is there is no real punishment for people who kill or murder or rape, not the fact that violent games are avalible.

England has become a bit of a crime ridden shithole, because the criminals know thanks to a bunch of naive human rights bleeding hearts, prison will be easy for them, and that there will be no real consequences to their actions, and they will probably be out again in no time.

The sad fact is, the worst of society need to be kept in check with an iron fist and punished. If people see others killing and murdering with little consequence, that will lead to more violence. Fear of the law in england seems pretty much nonexistant now because they have become so neutered.

Parents and politicians should look at trying to re-establish law and punishment so it might actually be more effective than focusing on fictional games.

Hehe oh yes it was such a success ;) I admit i'm a little ashamed of my country.
And btw: The San Andreas Game was "sponsored" by the organisator, and the gameboy game was broken.

@electricteenagedust: It's good that there was a dialogue with the gamers but that automatically raises the question: why wasn't there a dialogue BEFORE they made fools out of themselves?

There is no real way to rid the world of violence. Humans have been killing since the beginning of time. Everybody has the capacity to kill, but most of us have moral values/consequences/medications that keep our emotions in place. Trying to rid the world of violent games because you lack the mental capacity to cope with whats hip in the entertainment industry today is crazy.

sirdregan, no, not the point. The point is, people nowadays know they can get away with more. and like Jack of No Trades said, you cannot end violence, but I know that if you give harsher punishments, there are a lot of people who would probably think twice before committing violent crimes in general. I was talking more in general about all the shit that gets blamed on games, like stabbings and whatnot, not just shooting sprees. I think you misunderstood my point.

The point is, that people who are angry about violence in society should try to fix a law system that has been damaged and bruised by human rights loonies and bleeding, naive hearts, not blaming fictional entertainment.

It's funny, people talk about banning guns like it would end violence.

But of all the people in america who owns guns, I bet 90% of those gun owners have never shot anyone or even been in the position too, much like in canada.

I mean there's gun crime in england, and we have a ban of guns, so it really does nothing. Bad assholes are gonna get hold of guns, ban or not. Thats why they are bad people, folks. Banning home owners from having guns is just making it so they can't defend themselves as well as they should if the need arose.

There is only one problem with your argument, although I totally see where you're coming from. There is actually no proven correlation between the severity of punishment and the occurance of crimes. Even though one may tend to think so.

Put simply: There is no such thing as deterrence. People are going to hurt people. In several states of the USA, the f'in death penalty is imposed. And it's actually hard to think of a punishment more severe than that, without venturing into sick fuck territory. I might not have my numbers right, but I don't remember the crime rates in those states to be significantly lower than elsewhere.

Or at least not so that you can correlate that to the penalty.
