Gears of War to be the next Mario?

Gears of War to be the next Mario? photo

Following revelations that Gears of War is to be a trilogy, Epic vice president Mark Rein seems to be cradling some fairly far-fetched ambitions for the franchise, claiming it could go on for as long as Mario, Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. Here's an excerpt from Eurogamer's post on the topic:

"Gears is a trilogy? If we can keep making quality games that fans obviously want then why would we have to stop at three," Epic's vice president mused on the company forum.

"I don't see the Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Grand Theft Auto or Final Fantasy series (among others) stopping at three and they're still delivering compelling entertainment content that's easily worth the money (see Unreal Tournament as well).

"There's definitely, as many of you have pointed out, a lot more to learn about what's really happening on the planet Sera and in the lives of the members of Delta Squad," he added.

Ummm ... dunno if you've noticed, Mark, but most of the Final Fantasy games aren't related. Mario doesn't really have a single, cohesive storyline, so Nintendo can afford to keep milking the franchise with party games. And as for Metal Gear, I'm not sure people are going to be keen on any more of those after MGS4.

Personally, I don't think any story should require more than three games to tell it. I mean, look at the Hitman series ... after Silent Assassin, there wasn't really much about the franchise that blew me away. What do you guys think?

To be on par with Mario they need to work on a more marketable principal character, or market him differently. Get people familiar with his name, make him bigger than the game. Right now Gears is probably more like Half-Life if you ask me. Gordon is a staple in the video game world ... but is also not really part of the limelight. We recognize him, but we don't really talk about him. Snake, Cloud, etc have millions of fans.

Nothing about Blood Money blew you away? Were we playing the same game?

Yeah, I found Contracts decent (albeit a little easy), but by the time Blood Money released, it wasn't as new and fresh as the past games ... just my opinion, though.

I don't object -- I can't remember the last time I had this much fun with a game's single player and multiplayer.

Well, apparently Kojima [i]did[i] want to end it, until Konami handed him a nice, fat roll of money. Now, I hear he's planning another one for the PSP after Portable Ops.

I dunno, like I said...that's just my opinion. The last MGS game I enjoyed thoroughly was 2. 3 was a lot of fun, but it wasn't as enjoyable as 2 was...some things just get old after a while, I guess.

Microsoft doesn't need to embded a shooter game face into peoples' minds, they need a mario that isn't as gay as blinx the cat. blue dragon and other games should help, but i agree with Niero that they need to be building their characters more, and in a genre that doesn't have to compete with Master Chief.
