Gears of War screenwriter likes The Rock for Marcus Fenix photo

The Gears of War movie is right around the corner. Screenwriter Chris Morgan says that things are actually in the budgeting phase now. And since they're already thinking about money, this would probably be a good time to decide who will be playing the lead role of Marcus Fenix.

“Normally when I write, I think about the actor I’m writing for, but this one’s been difficult,” Morgan told MTV Movie Blog

I'm with him. My mind doesn't jump to an obvious choice either. Morgan mentions that the struggle is finding a "big guy who can play it stoic the whole time" and can also be an emotional character. He says that they need “a really f’ing good actor to pull off being a silent tough guy and put some humanity into it.”

So who came to mind? The Rock

“The Rock is awesome,” Morgan said. “There’s a genuine actor. Not only can he play the tough guy, but he can also play the nuanced, sensitive funny sad moments as well. But finding that guy is incredibly difficult.”

I...I could actually see that! Dwayne Johnson may not be as big as the in-game Marcus Fenix, but really, who is? The in-game models are just unnatural. Size isn't everything, though.

Morgan: “I don’t think they’re looking so much for size, but a guy you believe can throw a punch, and a guy you believe is stoic, locked in his own head, and can show emotion without telegraphing it.”

My mind goes wild with picks for the rest of the cast -- they're easy. I'm still wrapping my head around The Rock as Fenix, but it's starting to make sense. What do you think about Johnson as the lead? And who else would you pick for the rest of the cast?

Mickey Rourke IMHO - he was huge in The Wrestler, and even has the scars.

If beowulf has taught me anything , its that even tom cruise would be able to play this part with a CGI makeover.

If by acting "nuanced, sensitive" you mean "raising an eyebrow" then yes.

If Batista gets his acting skills up, I can honestly say this is a good looking cast. Cause I can't think of anyone else. Also, The Rock has to develop a believable spanish accent, but this is optional.

Personally I agree with t0pc0w, and from that photo he posted I wouldn't say he was too old looking - in fact I'd say the Rock looked too young.

Batista would fit the look and personality of the Fenix character well... but this is one adaptation where I hope they modify the source material, as all characters in the game are bonehead marine stereotypes.

Oh, and Dwayne Johnson is fucking sensational. Ever since Be Cool, I've been confident in his screen charisma.... and anybody who used to watch his promos back in his ring days knows he can handle dialogue like no other.

no. just... no. i no longer have any faith that this movie will be any good (there wasnt much anyway, so not too much of a let down). if the screenwriter thinks the rock is a good actor, i can only imagine how shitty the dialogue will be.

Also, the general audience for a Gears movie probably won't be too concerned about the Rock's acting ability (or lack thereof). As long as there are buckets of blood and dudes getting chainsawed in half, it will be a pretty authentic Gears experience.

I can't take Dwayne seriously in any role that doesn't have a comedic side. This is just a bad casting choice. A smile comes too easily to the guy's face. Does a smile come easily to Marcus' face? Hell no. He would probably look scary if he tried.

If we were going by voice similarities I'd say get Michael Ironside in there for Marcus, but the guy isn't big enough and probably to old.

I still say that they just go animated instead of trying to match faces to names. All that's going to happen is that they will fuck up a movie that will be (unfortunately) average at best

Val Kilmer has got way to fat to play Baird.

Baird- Ryan Reynolds
Cole- Michael Clarke Duncan or Lester Speight
Dom- Frankie G
Marcus- Batista (if they think he can handle the acting) or Rock if he can't.

bump for the Ryan Reynolds for Baird. Batista LOOKS the part of Marcus but can he act? Other wise the Rock will get the role. Not enough but just the right amount of make-up he would be able to pull off a grizzled look.

Lester Speight better be Cole. He's not only the voice actor, but the character was pretty much modeled after him, wasn't he?

Michael Clarke Duncan is good for Cole.

or here's one that seemed to get passed over. Why not Terry Tate, Office Linebacker? He's only the voice of the Cole Train, you know, and he already fits the role perfectly.

Um...Shia Lebeouf?

Batista looks good for the role but his acting skills just plain suck. He's all just like "I want my rematch" and im so angry I powerbomb anyone I see.

The Rock can nail the role with the right makeup to make him look grizzled but he needs to bulk up back to his wrestling days again
