Gears of War planned to experience decade-long run photo

This past weekend at NY Comic-Con, Gears of War writer, Joshua Ortega, told IGN in an interview that Epic plans to ride out the sweet wave of its success with the franchise for a long time. How long? According to Ortega, "It's a ten-year plan."

Gears of War is a great franchise, no argument there, but stop and think about the implications of that statement. Ten years of "emotional subplots." Ten years of "The Cole Train." And ten years of Cliff Bleszinski waving around a toy Lancer like an idiot as in the above image.

Even more staggering is the statement Ortega almost immediately follows this up with: "The Lancer is the new Lightsaber." I don't even know where to begin with how presumptuous and arrogant that is, and I take a very dim view of Star Wars.

If they continue to follow the release schedule precedented by the first two games, expect Gears of War 6 to be releasing sometime in 2016. I hear that there's a very touching reunion between Dom and "the-girl-he-dated-once-or-twice-in-high-school-but-wasn't-really-all-that-into" planned.

Uh oh, it seems they graduated from the same school of business as Ken Kutaragi.

Does this mean there will be an RTS shootoff called Gears of War Wars? :P

So far i loved both gears titles. You can milk something for to long though, so hopefully they do keep it fresh.

I always found it ridiculously arrogant when they release games that they say are the first in a planned trilogy.
So what the hell does it say about you when your saying your series will still be relevant 10 years from now?

Hopefully Gears 3 will have some coherent plot, and non-stereotypes for characters. Great games, but really; I can't play the same game 5 times, and not have it go anywhere.

I'm sorry, I played the first Gears of War, and didn't really enjoy it. I tried both Single play and Co-op, and well, it still didn't float my boat.

I'm sure plenty love it, but it's just not the kind of game for me.

But Epic's comments that the lancer is the new lightsaber? Bull crap, I love it when companies try to sound like they're trend-setters, when all they are are game makers.

Maybe in those ten years they'll have better story, and 90-100% glitch free multi-player.

The new lightsaber?? Someone should have slapped him before he finished getting the words out.

Ten years is nothing new for a franchise. MGS has easily been kicking for that long, and GTA and Halo are approaching it, to bring up a few examples.

Yeah I'm sure a lot of people love GoW, and I don't hate it and I enjoyed playing it, but I don't think I can say the same thing they are.

@Peronthious:

Those are fair points, although GTA exceeded the ten-year mark some time ago. GTA isn't the best example, in my opinion, as each of the games are independent of each other instead of presenting a running narrative.

Another of your examples, Metal Gear, has been going strong for over twenty years with a single running storyline. Which is nothing short of stunning when you think about it. But it also spanned several time periods, which may be what Gears will have to do to remain interesting.

The Gears gameplay is strong enough, at this point at least, to keep people entertained for a good, long time. And, like Halo, that may be enough indefinitely. But I suppose it depends on what type of games you like. Multiplayer fragfests are never going to hold my attention for very long and they'd really have to innovate to keep me interested.

The good thing about what epic can do is they can easily replace Marcus fenix with a new character who is more badass and tell his story along with a new squad as well. Or they can have a prequel of some kind. Either way as long as the franchise brings in cash Epic will keep it around, which is good news for them considering Unreal tournament is on the out. :(

I'm no big fan of Gears, but I find it odd that they decided to make it a ten year plan. It would seem more logical to keep the series going until the story is told. That's in my opinion.

at 10 years with 2 year development cycle per game it looks like we are in for 3 more GoW.

I don't find that too exciting. Come Cliffy you can do better.

Wow, what a shocker. I've enjoyed Gears so far, and as long as it is a profitable franchise it will be beaten to death. There's always a chance they will develop unique games down the line. I certainly wish them luck in their efforts.

Lightsaber worthy? Doubtful. Crowbar worthy? That may be the closest it will get. Half-life will still be a more involving game in terms of story to me at least. And even gameplay. Love that gravity gun.

Their ambition is high I'll give them that. Best of luck.
