Gears of War PC disables itself, Epic working on a remedy photo

In what's surely one of the top "WTF moments" of the day, Gears of War PC players were shocked to discover that the game's digital certificate expired yesterday, meaning no one can currently play the game without adjusting their computer's clock.

Sounds like a pretty big mistake on Epic's part, doesn't it? But before you go questioning the company's motives or what have you, Shacknews has quoted Epic programmer Joe Graf as saying, "This was a surprise to us too."

As you might have guessed, the problem is being taken care of. "We have been notified of the issue and are working with Microsoft to get it resolved. Sorry for any problems related to this," says Graf.

You have to admit, this situation is kind of funny. I suppose if the same problem were to plague Left 4 Dead or something more recent, it wouldn't be so comical, but come on -- it's the original Gears of War ... on PC.

I think Cliffy B did it on purpose and didn't tell anyone. Perhaps as a last "fuck you" to PC gamers.

Ok, scratch one reason to be using the Games for Windows Live service...out of two reasons.

Seriously, it's breaking the Fallout 3 DLC, Shadowrun was a joke, and Dawn of War 2 will be better on Steam anyway. It's like every game that's been forced to use it is fighting the service somehow, and no one really knows what to do with it.

This is why I've stopped most PC gaming except from Steam.

Considering the clusterfuck that is Gears2, this is no shocker. OH, and don't go complaining about it on their forums, unless you want your posts deleted and your account banned.

Now imagine that happening 7-8 years after a game is out, when the developer/publisher doesn't give a shit anymore.

Also, I don't really get the last paragraph. It's from 2006 (OMG OLD LOL) and it's on PC (OMG SUCKS LOL), so who cares? That's a little short-sighted.

There's nothing wrong with older games, or PC games for that matter. Gears of War is a special case (in my opinion) in that it was really pushed as a console game from the beginning, and I can't imagine that many people are playing it on PC these days.

@unangbangkay:

I think I read somewhere that GFWL will be required for multiplayer in DoW2.

There were time when Steam would prevent users from using their games.

I can imagine them going "huh...that wasn't supposed to happen.." with a surprised look on their face. I didn't like Gears that much but it's still lame that something like this happens.
