Gears of War movie to be directed by Len Wiseman photo

It's been revealed that Len Wiseman, of Die Hard 4 and Underworld fame, will be directing the upcoming Gears of War flick. The film's target release date was originally summer 2009, but it's been reported that a delay is likely.

Wiseman will be creating a new draft alongside Chris Morgan (Wanted, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift), with game designer Cliff Bleszinski penned as an executive producer.

Looking at Wiseman's résumé, I think it's safe to assume that the Gears of War movie will have plenty of guns, explosions, large men shouting "get to the chopper," and of course, action, all while looking good visually.

The man is certianly no Uwe Boll, but I guess that's a damn good thing.

Well, I guess that's good news. I'm still skeptical, but I'll still see it just for the fact that it's a Gears of War movie.

Why does there need to be a Gears of War movie? What can they do that hasn't been done in the game?

I think that they couldn't have picked anyone else better to work on the Gears of War movie. With his background with Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard, he has already shown he knows how to make a good movie. Now all they have to do is nail the story and Marcus then we will be set.

I'm simply not interested in a "Gears of War" movie.

I don't think there's a better game to adapt to film. I mean really, how in the hell could they screw this up? It's practically a Hollywood action flick as is. That being said, I'll wait and see before I reserve tickets.

I don't see the need for a movie, but this guy sounds like he can handle the "complex subplots and subtle nuances" that we've come to expect from GoW's story line.

I'll laugh if anyone says they'll ruin the story and/or game. As if Gears had some amazing voice work or narrative. "FUCK YEAH!"

If anything this movie will be passable. They can't fuck up violence too much.

Considering Gears of War's lack of any story whatsoever perhaps Uwe Boll would of been the better choice.

Wow... with Cliff Bleszinski as an executive producer, could this actually be... good? Could this be the video game movie that actually listens to the creator of the game? Can't be!

Love or hate Cliff, you can't deny the great directional choice in Len Wiseman. Having done three pretty good movies so far, thats a nice little run these days. If Die Hard 4 was any indication of this man's ability to bring action to the screen, I think Gears could turn out to be pretty spectacular as long as the writing doesn't suck.

Chris Morgan hasn't done anything too spectacular to take note of yet. Maybe I'll have more of an opinion after watching Wanted and Sakura: Blue-Eyed Samurai. But even then, he didn't write those scripts alone.

All I'm saying is that the gore better not be watered down for a PG13 rating. I want to see people blown apart by shotgun blasts, heads exploded with the use of sniper rifles, stomping someone's face into the curb, and Locust cut in twain with a Lancer's Chainsaw

Die Hard 4... Crap
Underworld... CRAP
Tokyo Drift... ZOMG CRAP
Wanted... Sure to be CRAP

Consider me weary of this particular game to film adaptation.

Underworld wasn't the high-watermark of western cinema, but it most certainly wasn't utter crap.

I mean its a movie about vampires and werewolves fighting, what were you expecting from it?

I suppose I was looking for something more than another rendition of vampire decadence, inspired from the writer indulging in far too many Anne Rice novels, spliced together with poor action and FX ripped unabashadly from the Matrix, all to the tune of horrible goth-techno-buttrock.

The story was unoriginal, the action was sub-par, and the effects were laughably bad (Blue, vampire-lupine anyone?).

The only saving grace this movie had was watching Kate Beckinsdale in skin tight pleather.

That, my friend, is a sight to behold.

This is probably going to be awful anyway. And while I am loathe to admit it, if they have Kate Beckinsale run around in that outfit again I might just make it a rental.

Yet again, the premise of the movie was vampires and werewolves battling. You got precisely that.

You seem to hold this particular subgenre to a much higher standard than most people. Its not exactly high art...

Some movies are more about having fun than being ultra serious dramas. I mean, not everyone watches Die Hard 4 or Underworld expecting Oscar worthy performances. They are called "popcorn flicks" for a reason. I think a Gears movie would fall in to that category pretty well.

and Aliens was about space faring commandos being attacked by Giant bug-like bipedal space aliens. And yet, somehow, they made a good movie out of it.

But you know what, you're probably right, I'm probably wrong. Underworld wasn't a terrible, stupid movie. Because the creators intended on making a terrible, stupid movie. Which makes it okay, and no less insulting to viewer at all.

Some movies are about having fun, but then they take all the cool shit out of it. Die Hard 4 was lame, especially the scene with the jet and the collapsing overpass. The CGI just completely ruins the suspense.

Wow Tokyo Drift, badass, I wasn't expecting Frank Darabont but Chris Morgan? I almost wish it was Uwe Boll.

Sorry I'm being a bit of a dick but... well, here's my stance.

I love action, blockbuster, popcorn flicks, as much as the next guy, but I still want to see a well put together movie. Cloverfield, Casino Royale, Batman Begins, Aliens, Indiana Jones 1-3, Iron Man, these ARE popcorn flicks, as well as movies with pretty ridiculous concepts if you really think about it. But it's the talent behind and in front of the camera that treat these movies with at least some respect and in turn create movies that, amidst their ridiculousness and rampant implausibilities, are still great movies.

But it feels lately, that a lot of the directors/writers/actors/etc who get their hands on these types of movies are completely irresponsible with them. Either that or they just don't have what it takes to take a ridiculous concept and create something that not only has explosions, action and all the other things that we ALL love about these types of movies, but good characters and enjoyable stories with strong dialogue. In turn these movies end up as a shadow of what they could have been.

Then the studios make money off of them, and, in turn, they churn out more and more awful movies because they see they can be profitable by making subpar action movies that insult their audience because they somehow think we are too stupid to care.

And this is why I get kinda pissy when someone defends these types of movies. I feel if we chose to not to see these vapid, brainless, unoriginal action films, they will have no choice to actually make quality movies in stead of inundating us with this garbage.

Again, sorry for being a dick, I guess this subject just gets me riled up for some reason.

"Die Hard 4 and Underworld "

Die Hard 4 was way too over the top, and anybody who saw Underworld for any reason other than to oogle Kate Beckinsale would watch anything that was put in front of them.

It will SUCK ASS and more than likely, it won't be Wiseman's fault. I not a big fan of the Underworld series (even though Kate Beckinsale looks delicious!) nor Die Hard 4's original PG-13 release (the unrated version still felt neutered), but will happily admit that I think Len Wiseman is a good director and should be respected. But he only has the 3 previously mentioned films under his belt, none of them huge blockbusters in theaters by Hollywood standards that would give him complete control over a project.
Be prepared for tons of studio interference, reshoots, nasty rumors true or not, battles for final cut, going over budget due to the demands of the producers, then everyone pretending to play nice while everyone is out promoting the film's release.
