Gears of War in Japanese

12:33 AM on 01.22.2007   |   Brad Rice

The guys over at SiliconEra dug up videos of the Japanese dub of Gears of War. Not surprisingly, most games that go over to Japan from the US just get stuck with subtitles and then put on the shelves, but Gears of War got the special treatment, and got dubbed. I really like the voice acting for it, too, as it seems like they made some great choices with the "badass" voiceactors. Unfortunately, I can't quite identify who the VAs are. Do we have any astute Japanator readers who might know? Also, what do you think of the voices?

Also, check out the opening for the game:

can't you just set your 360 to japanese and games will be in japanese? used to do it with halo 2 all the time (you haven't played halo 2 yet until you've played it in korean, the voices were priceless)

I'm just impressed you even know the name of a single Japanese voice actor, Dick.

That was a pretty well done job, its a shame more Japanese gamers don't like games like Gears

The Japanese voices don't seem to fit well with the stereotypical, beefy American football players with armor and guns, but it's cool that MS is at least trying to give Japanese gamers the full experience. I know there's some underground scene over there that complains every time some game in America doesn't come out over there or doesn't get its own dub. Still, you have to wonder in which games they'd prefer the English (such as in Resident Evil or Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix), seeing as they love American culture.

And man, just watching that first movie got me tense. I think I need to get a 360 soon.

Is it me, or does Marcus have that same grizzled, tired veteran-type voice that Snake has? Not the same actor, but the same stereotypical voice. Baird sounds about right, I'm not sure about Dom. Cole seems to lack something, maybe it's his badass 'blackness' (a cultural thing), but we can hardly fault the Japanese for that. I wonder if the Japanese version of the game comes with the English voice track as well. If I were Japanese, I'd prefer to listen to the game in its original, intended presentation. I personally like the inverse for Japanese games, I'm not a fan of redubs at all, even if they're generally very good.

Why do the Japanese get an opening sequence? I don't remember watching that for the US version. I remember starting off in the prison, there was no history of the war video to introduce you to the game.

On the viewing of the second video, Dom has a harder voice than his US counterpart, which was more 'buddy'-sounding and sarcastic.

Also, the Locust have been dubbed as well. I'm not sure I like it, they sound like Japanese Oni (demons) to me, but at least they're intelligible to the Japanese ear.
