Gears of War hits Games on Demand photo

Feel the need to download a new (old) game over Games on Demand? Epic Games would be pleased if you had the itch. The original Gears of War -- the Platinum Hits version -- is now available over Microsoft’s console-side digital downloads service.

Experience all the cursing, the brown, the blood and gore and the Emergence Day origins story all over again. Or don’t. Either way, the 6GB Gears of War download is priced terribly at $19.99 for your buying pleasure. Just don't tell Fenix that you bought it at Amazon.com for $18.38 or lower. He's a bit of a testy fellow.

I swear, both Games on Demand and Xbox Originals are the most horrible download services ever created. All the games are overpriced and they take up a ton of hard drive space. Then you have to buy another overpriced hard drive.

I suppose this is good for people who don't have a Best Buy or something around where they live, but man, just go online. Save yourself the trouble and the money.

I had to wait upto six hour's even with a good internet connection to download Elder Scroll's Oblivion. SIX HOUR'S!
Aside from this the prices are rediculous all for the simple convenience of not leaving the house.
The irony is that I originally chose the route of downloading it so I could carry on playing some games on my day off. The Xbox stop's downloading if you start up a game.

Oh well...

So far digital distribution is missing the point entirely. There is no cost to the publisher for packaging, marketing, or distribution, yet they keep those costs in the price in order to not piss off retail stores, who are concerned (with good reason) about digital distribution cannibalizing their sales.

Either way, I always prefer hard copies if the game is identical (i.e. not improved in some way like the download-only Rez HD was compared to the original non-HD Rez), so at least retailers can count on me, since there's no way I'd buy digital unless the price was low enough for an impulse buy.

You can buy it at GS for 10 bucks, xbox originals aren't as bad tho since they don't sell xbox games at GS anymore.Granted, you could buy them off of Amazon but I try to stay away from online purchases.

digital distribution has so far been a big let down price wise. no shipping costs, manual and case costs, disc costs and they're still just if not more expensive than the physical option!

I bought it used at Blockbuster for $5.99. The store was having a closing sale. MS is going to have to lower the games on demand prices if they are going to compete.

$20 isn't bad for Gears, but considering its 3 years old and cheaper almost everywhere else...

Most places are selling the Game of The Year of Gears 2 for 19.99. Only a fool would buy the first one for that price. In Canada, they're trying to get $40 for Gears 1 on Games on Demand!

Compete with going out of business sales?

I really hope this digital distribution crap fails soon. It's a growing trend that really has me worried for the future of the industry. If I'm paying for anything, I want a product, not a download.

Remember when ownership used to mean actually owning something? I do.

Wow, apparently I'm the only one who didn't think $20 was a bad deal, especially considering the game is $20 brand new.

I spent $9 on a 6" Subwy sandwich, chips and a pop today. Twice that for Gears of War is a no-brainer.

Games on Demand is something I have been very disappointed with. Its just too over priced why would anyone pay twenty pound for gears when you get get it in any shop for under a ten. It doesnt make sense. Microsoft really needs to head over to steam ad take some notes

Except for it being a terrible game the pricing isn't that bad for "Games on Demand." Usually they're selling $15-20 games for $30.

PS: Dear Internets, it is ridiculous (just like it sounds), not rediculous.

it's a simple case of M$ trying to "have their cake & eat it". something they've been doing since...well...forever.

these 'games on demand' have already done their "tour of duty" (so to speak) on retail shelves, so they're not stepping on their toes and it costs M$ nothing to offer up these games on Live to less knowledgeable or compulsive spending gamers.

it's a win/win for M$. the only way to combat this kind of blatant fleecing is for editors of gaming websites (like this one) to post articles blasting M$ for these practices.

keep beating the war-drum and hope the message gets heard.

Well, at least it's not Gears of War 2.

I find it..well...hilarious that some people are comparing digital distribution pricing to used sales from store closing sales. Personally? $20 isn't so bad. To be fair, I haven't bought any of them, since I know I can get them cheaper most of the time in physical form, but I'm not offended at the $20 price point. Those $30 games are pretty dumb though, considering their age.

As an addendum, I think Microsoft would be incredibly wise to have Steam-style RETARDED sales on major holidays and weekly. That's basically a guaranteed influx of what amounts to pure profit and a whole lot of good will from the community. I'm somehow less impressed with 33% off year-old DLC...

I never said I purchase anything from xbox live, besides that I don't own a credit card.
