Gears of War 2 will feature violence filters photo

I’m of the mind that terrible violence on the scale that the Gears of War series has always shown us is a good thing. Bullets, and especially chainsaws, should always cause a massive amount of havoc on an alien body. In the original Gears, pools of blood erupted all over the place, including the player’s camera. This earned the game a very understandable ESRB rating of "Mature." Gears of War 2 will have the same rating and level of violence, except according to WhatTheyPlay, Microsoft will now give parents an extra option to turn off naughty words and replace blood “with sparks.”

I haven’t had the pleasure to see the spark-laden action, but I instantly get the image of the “Grunt Birthday Party” skull in Halo 3 when I think about this. Of course, violence filters are nothing new when it comes to "Mature" rated games. The Mortal Kombat series has always been kind enough to gives us green blood when the action gets too intense.

My question is, if you are this much of a concerned parent, why even bother with buying your child a game that promises to be as violent as Gears of War 2? There are tons of alternatives available on the market. Games like Viva Pinata and the upcoming Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts will be plenty of fun without gore, guns, and chainsaws. Perhaps the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff were on to something when they said, “Parents just don’t understand.”

You could do this in the original game.

Id rather have language filters than violence filters. Then again, i'd rather have options like UT the original and have normal to MAX gore.

If parents are buying this game for their kids, what are the chances they're going to bother with a violence filter?

Man just dont sell the games to kids! If a parent buys this for a kid fine them! Then Games cant get blamed for violence only dumb parents!

Overall, I think this is a great idea! Amid cries of parents claiming that video games were desensitizing their children to violence, someone had the good sense to say, "Hey, let's make it so that when you brutally chainsaw a guy in two sparks come out! Then we can protect the children! Little Timmy will still be grossed out when he saws someone in half and blood comes out!"

Video games don't turn children into killers and to suggest that removing blood is somehow an improvement is laughable. If you don't want your kids playing violent games, don't buy Gears of War; removing blood doesn't change the fact that your kid is shooting and sawing people in half.

I think this is a waste of time. Parents should not buy this game for their kids in the first place. Like most said, if parents are buying this for their kids, I'm guessing violence and language isn't a big deal for them in the first place.

...This is not news. This was part of the original game.

It isn't so much for parents, but also for competitive play:

While it's fun and all to see the gibs and blood covering your screen, it screws things all to hell when you get shot with a shotgun point blank and blood covers your screen, obscuring your view in the middle of a tournament. (in the original, it only happened most frequently with the host, but given that there will be servers in Gears 2, it may be a widespread problem) Also, makes things a tad easier to manage when the game doesn't have to process all that violence splashing over the screen. I've seen the framerate take a bit of a hit when there's a lot going on.

There are other reasons, like making it friendlier for MLG blah blah blah, I don't support the league and their mission to make every game play like Halo, but you get the idea.

The point is...it's been in there for two years. How did you miss it?..

I disagree. There is absolutely no downside to adding violence/language filters. They're completely optional, and they're not activated by default. The first Gears itself has a merged v/l filter.

There's a lot of talk about making games more "accessible." If this makes it easier for some adverse to these "mature" material to actually play the game, all the better. It doesn't even have to be a kid, it could be anybody who is turned away by the more extreme elements presented.

Is there any way to get the violence that other people filter out?

I'd rather not have it go to waste.

I liked Alien Homanids version better. For those who dont know, all blood was replaced by flowers and sparkles. I kept it on that mode because it was waaaaaaay more satisfying. Also, M rated games shouldn't have kiddy filters. The kids shouldn't own it, if they do, they wont use it.

A game called Gears of War has violence filters.. Something interestingly ironic about that.

I'd like to see if the game offers some sort of explanation as to why Locusts spark as they are shot and cut in half. Were they robots all along?

This was in the original Gears too, more or less. You could filter out the harsher profanities and turn off the blood, I believe. Either way, it's a nice option to have. Sometimes Gears gets a little too meaty for me.

Me thinks Epic wants to avoid parental outcry. For example; If parents complain about the amount of violence in GEOW 2, Epic can easily counter back with the fact that they included the violence filter.

I remember having the non-gore option in Gears of War and chainsawing people. They'd fall apart like jello.

This is already in the first game, other than the removal of swears. Also: trust me, it is a GREAT addition. Play without gore on for 5 seconds. It's hilarious and awesome. Hit someone straight on with the Boomshot? They trip and fall down.

I don't see how making sparks come out of a freshly chainsawed body is really that much less gruesome than blood. They would have to replace the chainsaw with a giant inflatable hammer or something.
