Gears of War 2 patch is live, getting punched through walls no longer a threat photo

Gears of War 2’s multiplayer is a drag. The particularly vocal Internet crowd said they have abandoned Epic’s glitch-ridden frag fest entirely. (These are the same folks who said they would never buy another EA published game or purchase a magazine because it gave their favorite game a low score). A few weeks ago, Epic’s Marc Rein promised a fix for the exploits that has deterred many legitimate players. That title update is now available for download.

And it fixes an amazing amount of stuff. Check it out:

  • Exploit Fixes: Crabwalking, invisibility, weapon-slide, melee through walls, unlimited ammo.
  • General Fixes: Shotgun and Boomshot updates, meatshield chainsawing updates, team communication, Insane gamer pic award.
  • Balancing: Planted proximity grenade updates, increased quitting penalties, spawn protection, flamethrower stopping power.
  • Improvements: Annex uses execution rules, achievement progression in the War Journal, added 7 DLC-based achievements worth 175 gamerscore.
Anyone else excited about the prospect of a clean multiplayer match now that this is out?

And yet it's a laggy piece of shit failure compared to it's predecessor. Gears 1>Gears 2, and as such it looks like Epic is following the road that Bungie took. Release an awesome game, ahead of its time, then rape it with not-up-to-par sequels.

Are you kidding Usedtabe? Gears 1 sucks. Gears 2 is actually fun.

Don't compare this to Halo 1 & 2. After Halo 1, 98% of the dev team left. Gears 2 has more or less the same team.

What's up with more quitting penalties? I don't play versus online but it's still stupid. Maybe someone has something else to do than play a damned game.

Maybe I'll pick up another copy eventually, but still don't believe that it'll work 100% online.

You people and your Halo bashing....what did halo ever do to you? Some of my fondest LAN memories are playing Halo 2 with tons of people, tvs and xboxes.....and late night runs to 7/11.

Halo is awesome.

Their is still atrocious lag, host advantage that is worse than the first game, chainsaw is still unstoppable during lag, and worse of all, no player matches. Ranked sucks as does private matches. Matchmaking and it's fans that need their hands held and every decision made for them can die in a fire. Long gone are the good ol' days of putting in some match criteria that YOU WANT, searching, looking at list of rooms for best ping, and playing endless rounds on endless map cycles meeting tons of new people and bullshitting all night long. Gears 1> Gears 2.

I enjoy the matchmaking in Gears 2, far more so then the "search for a server of your friends and you might find them" shit. I also enjoy the game play much better. Lag is rarely an issue for me, and when it is EVERYONE suffers. As opposed to Gears 1 where the host shotgun clearly had an advantage over everyone regardless of how smooth it was (and sometimes wasn't.)

Also, Halo (the entire series) is awesome.

I don't see why everyone is bringing Halo into this... this post is about Gears of War not Halo. Maybe I missed the memo that said 'Halo = Gears of War' or something, but really guy's... stay on topic maybe? Anyways, ever since I got Gears 2 I've just played private matches with friends or wingman with a friend, wingman is like the only mode in which matchmaking actually works, well for me.

@Cotton: Pretentious much?

The story in the Halo games are at the very least passable. I would even go so far as to call them decent. The story is epic enough in scope to be considered intriguing. The protagonist is an interesting mix of Greco-Roman legend and modern-day super hero.

yeah, i'm definitely one of the people who feel Gears 1 > Gears 2......something magical about the first gears that the second just doesnt' come close to emulating. I am happy about the hip firing shotgun being more accurate and most of the stupid glitches being fixed. But it's still not bringing back all my gears of war 1 fans back on my friends list playing the second one. Used to be over 20 ppl a night playing gears 1, now it's only 1 or 2 , maybe 4 if i'm lucky =(

Gears 2 > Gears 1

That host advantage was the bullshit of all bullshits.

Gears 2 is way more finely tuned.

I'm not playing this game online, but I didn't play the first one online either. Nice to see three of the achievements can be done offline in the free map pack, but a real pain in the balls to see four require the premium map pack.

Oh, and please stop using the < button. It's right up there with "no offense, but" and "uuhmmmm....." in the list of ways to look like a dick, IMO. Wait, did I just write IMO? Now I am a dick. Fuck.

How about they add client side hit detection?

How about some system so the person with the best connection gets the host? Not the kid who lives in a swamp somewhere running XBL off a 56k modem?

How about making the shotgun a weapon that does ONE specific thing and not this insanely random thing? Will it gib that guy? Will it down me in 2 shots? Will it down me in 5? Will I manage to get that chainsawer down BEFORE he hits me?

Oh well, I sold my copy already, not like I care anymore but its interesting to see all the lies and bullshit Epic spewed prior to Gears 2 release, never buying from them again, that's for damn sure.

@Dan

Uhh, what? Proof please that the 98% of the people left.

@Cotton

Oh man, Halo story is sci-fi drivel, never heard that one before.

Noah: Good times.

As for Gears 2. Haven't noticed much difference. If it wasn't for the update notice I would have never known.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
