Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

When we reviewed Gears of War 2 back in November, I quite confidently gave it a 9.0. I did this because I loved the game and couldn't get enough of it. Fast forward a month later, and I cannot bring myself to pick the game up. Thanks to a matchmaking system that was ruined after the supposed "fix" launched and a bevy of exploits, Gears 2 has become unplayable for me.

At the time, I had no clue it would be so bad. How can you? Most of these real game breaking exploits only surface after weeks of bug hunting (on the part of players it seems, not on the part of Epic's so-called testers). Had I experienced then what I experience now when I try and play Gears 2, a 9.0 would not have been the score.

The above video is savage in its attack on Epic, listing some of the most prevalent glitches to be found in Gears 2. While I wouldn't go as far as to label Rod Fergusson a "ginger liar," I will say that this has become a disappointing norm for what people still insist on calling the "next generation." While technology progresses, game development seems to decline, as corners become cut with ever-lengthening scissors and projects get rushed out of the door with barely any testing. Gaming is evolving beyond the means and budget of developers, and that's not a good place.

Is this what the game industry is trying to tell people that Hi-Def gaming is all about? Patches and rush jobs? I dread to think what the new generation of hardware will bring. If studios can't cope with the pressure and scale of today's HD console demands, the future looks rather bleak.

People amaze me. Atari and Intellivison games had errors. Think about how simple those game were and now think about how complex todays games have become.

I'm with Sterling in this one. Gears of War has become a truly high profile title and, as such, is supposed to bring to the table quality accordingly to the (as far as I'm concerned, unexplainable) hype it fed. And yes, games are more about hype-feeding than anything else nowadays.
I find it disturbing that a game nearly identical to its predecessor manages to garner so much atention, love and bias.
This level of glitching is unacceptable in a game that has its multiplayer offerings as a strong selling point.

Im with Jim on this one. With the recent era of games, bugs in games have not only grown in numbers but the severity of them have grown too. Too many devs use patches as a safety net, basically meaning the first few months after a games launch is essentially a second beta test.

And then there's Gears of War 2 (i refuse to use GoW2 to shorten it, that means GOD OF WAR 2), coming from Epic... the guys who brought us Unreal, you'd think they'd have better experience resolving issues like this. But no, the amount of glitches in the game are just unexcuseable both in single player AND multiplayer. Far too many times in single player Dom has glitched completely out of the game and then the amount of game breaking multiplayer glitches makes the game unplayable. Heck, there are glitches in Gears 2 that were around and fixed in Gears 1!

Then to top everything off, instead of fixing the dang glitches in a timely manner like Valve or Bungie, Epic decides to test our stupidity by giving us a map pack that should have been included with the original game.

The worst thing is a lot of these bugs were in the original too. Now that is just plain laziness from EPIC.
There's no excuse for it and is ripping off the customer.
At the very least have a BETA.

I hate it when a community user attacks developers like this. Criticism and angry ranting are two different things, and users often don't realize just how much money it costs to make these games and flush out all of the glitches.
"Gaming is evolving beyond the means and budget of developers, and that's not a good place." Yeah you pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one, I couldn't agree more.

@Kaironn
Do you think the reason he posted this so "late" into the issue is because maybe he actually was trying to play the game? Idiot.

Shut. The fuck. Up. Gears of War 2 was arguably the most highly anticipated game of 2008, and you're telling me that, "Oh, well, it's a video game and video games have glitches, so that's okay." Stop playing video games please, because it's complacent fuckers like yourself that allow these companies to get away with bullshit like this.

No game should ever require patches shortly after release. It is pathetic and sad that the industry has reached the point where nearly every single game that comes out requires a patch. If the game isn't done, don't release it. Test more, test better.

I bought Saints Row 2 recently, new and all. I love it, too bad Volition are fucking morons. Not only did it keep freezing, but it kept getting scratched up by my Xbox. Now it's completely fucked up. While Microsoft is partially at fault for the game being scratched up, I mostly blame Volition because this shit never happened to any other of my games.

By the way, I only managed to play the game for about 5 hours.

it's not that the studios don't understand, it's that the people who call the shots for the studios don't understand and just plain don't care.

Funny how you treat GoW2 so harshly for its glitches after giving it a 9, but you still have plenty of love for LBP, considering it has the worst glitch to date; it just deletes everything you have!

I know everyone wants to blame somebody for bugs and exploits, and that a great deal of the time they try to blame QA. The truth of the matter is, though you will occasionalyy get a batch of dumbshit testers, most of the time if an issue doesn't occur until the later portions of the dev cycle, the testers switch to "deadline" mode just like the developers do and concentrate more on getting through things rather than actually doing what they're being paid for.

That wouldn't happen if there wasn't as much pressure from developers, and THAT pressure wouldn't happen if there wasn't so much pressure from corporate, which in turn wouldn't happen if us gamers would just chill the fuck out and wait for the shit to get done, rather than blasting forums impatiently and angering the people paying for the games to be made.

In short, Gamestop is evil, Stop preordering.
