Gears 2 writer totally, 100% understands videogames, is handsome photo

Gears of War has always been ridiculous. It's a game about overtly muscular walking phalli with chainsaw guns that hack up creatures resembling steroid-infused bipedal frogs. All games are a little absurd though, if you try and compare their necessary mechanics to other media.

Former comic book writer Josh Ortega clearly sees the farce in Gears, and when he was writing Gears of War 2, he had to come to grips with the way a videogame works. According to MTV, Ortega couldn't wrap his head around the fact that there were so many ammo drops just lying around, before being told it was simply a "game-ism."

"[Epic told me] 'Dude, it makes the game fun,'" explains Ortega. The writer actually gets to poke fun at the situation in Gears 2, when co-star Dom acknowledges the abundance of ammunition by stating that "someone really needs to do an ammo sweep."

Amusing anecdote, but it's also very interesting to think about. Clearly Ortega doesn't appreciate how videogames bend the rules of logic in the name of fun, while we accept some ludicrous things without letting it dampen our investment in a game's world. Then again, maybe Ortega's just acting like that smart-ass kid who complains throughout Tom & Jerry that a "cat's head can't turn anvil shaped."

I hate that kid so much.

It IS pretty funny to think about, though. Kind of like in The Bard's Tale, where wild wolves drop all sorts of things, and the narrator comments on it. I suppose it's promising that the game's writer approached it as though he were writing a proper story, though. Could mean that it has some substance.

Dude, it's just like in Half-Life. Whenever theres a room full of ammo and health you know you're about to be f*cked in the A.

The old suspension of disbelief...I suppose as a comic book writer he never took advantage of characters inexplicably surviving events that would kill them or impossibly coincidental timing. Honestly it really feels like a silly outdated thing to say. Also I hate that guy too...ruins every god damn movie ever.

I'm sure there's a perfectly logical explanation for this. It's simply the beasts with ammo for blood that wander about, and they shit out fully stocked ammo containers. Nothing illogical at all.

I appreciate some tongue-in-cheek humor in my games. Glad to see Gears 2 may not be taking itself as seriously as the first.

You know Jim, the fixation with cocks is in the eye of the beholder.
A gun is a phallus a tower is just a big dick and stuff likes that.
Well, a weapon shaped like a vagina wouldn't be too functional would it? Also, towers like tits. Not very practical, space-wise.

yeah, fuck that kid, but i don't think ortega is him. he was probably aiming for something more believable, like enemies dropping weapons with ammo in them, rather than ammo being scattered randomly around.

and yes, wolves should drop meat, fur and maybe claws, not gold and lockpicks, even if tom's head turns into an anvil. unless it's a cartoonish, or at least funny, game. which gears ain't.

He has a point. there is no reason that they couldn't be a bit more imaginative with the ammo drops - just have every dead body drop a few clips as well as ammo in the weapon they are wielding, or have dead human soldiers lying around with ammo still strapped to the corpses armour or something.

It's his job, man. It is his job to think about these things.

Suspension of disbelief worked for Iraq, it'll work for video games.

ZING!

It's ok for certain games but if it persists certain games will never be able to be more than simply entertainment. You won't be able to make it art because of the many breaks in immersion.
