Gearbox talks Borderlands on Wii, Claptrap side-scroller photo

A double dose of Borderlands stories does the soul some good. Not long ago, CBS 11 News got together with Gearbox Software VP Brian Martel to discuss a range of topics, all of which were rooted in the studio's latest game.

The full discussion, which you can watch here, is nearly eleven minutes in length. Knowing most of you busy people don't have eleven minutes, That VideoGame Blog went about transcribing the key quotes beyond the stuff we already knew about Borderlands.

While Martel notes "Nintendo sells the most copies," he states they aren't about to port Borderlands to Wii "just because." As he refreshingly puts it: "You don’t want to feel like you’re milking the product just to get it on the Wii, especially if it doesn’t really help the game."

As for the future of Borderlands' rambunctious little scamp of a robot, Claptrap, Martel says "he’s a great character, we’d love to see him as a sort of a side-scroller character." Whoa -- that one came out of seemingly nowhere. Personally, I love Claptrap, and would love to see Gearbox flesh him out further.

I think Claptrap, WALL-E and Johnny-5 should start a robot gang....

Sidescollers aside (see what I did there) derivative games are often crap and have a hard time getting out from underneath that from which they are created.

"Look at me, I'm dancin'!"

<3 Claptrap (not to be confused with Klaptrap from the Donkey Kong Country series :D)

I'm surprised to find that no Transformer has ever been named Claptrap. I was searching for an image of one such Transformer to make a joke with but, lo and behold, not one exists. I am shocked and dismayed.

Claptrap reminds me of that Cooker robot in Wallace and Gromit: A Grand Day Out.

I think the point of putting the game on the Wii would be to utilize the pointer controls, which for the next 6-12 months, will likely remain exclusive to the console.

That's if we're talking a port, which could might look good on the Wii if they upped the cel shading a bit to make up for the texture loss.

Now if we're talking a on-rails shooter with the Borderlands name, then yeah, that would be milking it.

Sells the most copies of what? I own one game, Wii Sports, which came bundled with that junky white box.

Johnathan I don't know how well it would do looking at DeadSpace: Extractions sales on Wii. It just seems odd to me take a francise that starts on one console that starts building a fanbase then make a spin off game on another console where the fanbase doesn't completely transfer over into.

It would be interesting to say the least to have a Wii Borderlands. I wouldn't much mind it however the online experience I'm guessing wouldn't be much of one with friend codes and no way to set up lobbies or talk to eachother. It would go against about everything Gearbox were trying to accomplish in the first place by building the game the ground up for co-op.

while is see why its a good idea its not on the wii, their *ports* are why they still say they love the wii are really not very good quality.

I have played JSR and I know if they did do cell shading right the wii could hand this game well.

God... I agree with the guy, but this was an invitation for anti-Wii fanboys to come out of the woodwork.

@Czech Monster

Then you're in the minority, dude. 99% of people (gamers included - shocking, right?) don't consider the Wii to be "junky." Those who do don't own one.

You can call the Wii junky all you want, but if you try to argue with Nintendo's sales numbers, that's just ignorant. Nintendo sells so many games that they don't know what to do with all the money they've made.

I love Claptrap. He is always there to get a cheap laugh out of a game that's supposed to be "kinda sorta" taken seriously. I laughed both times when he ran right at the beginning, and I'll laugh many more times to come. Plus, when you walk by him, you can hear him talking to himself and dancing.

Gearbox needs to release a patch to update Claptrap's script with about 50 more monologues. He says that "look at me, I'm dancing" thing about twice a minute. Look at me, it's getting on my nerves.

@pedrovay They know what to do with their money. Make meaningless presentations about said money, instead of investing it into new IP's, really making the Wii shine, or giving me a god damn Mega Man character add-on in Brawl.

"We took one of the Brothers In Arms games and put it on [the Wii]. So we love the Wii."

Oh fuck off, Gearbox. Demiurge Studios' terrible port of two games from 2005 certainly showcases your "love" for the Wii.

And I am not even asking for any of your higher-profile games to be made for the console, either. I understand that a lot of devs do not want to work on the Wii, and that's fine. I get it.

But, please do not try and pass off garbage-level support as "love."

*restrains self before going on a rant about the illogical fallacies spouted by dishonest developers and publishers concerning the Wii*
