Gearbox Software confirms Borderlands shortages photo

So, you remember this morning when we talked about Borderlands selling out at various stores and cynically decided it was marketing hype? Apparently the hype is justified, as Gearbox Software has issued a statement following reports of Borderlands' relative scarcity. Apparently there is an inventory shortage going on. Perhaps someone underestimated the demand for this game?

"Yes, Borderlands copies of the Xbox 360 SKU have run out in a few regions, especially the east coast," confirms VP of marketing Steve Gibson. "We are aware of this and are working with production and distribution at ramping up to catch up with demand. There will be more copies of Borderlands available on shelves as early as Thursday or Friday at many  retailers.

"The PlayStation 3 SKU issues on the west coast are mostly regional and can be addressed by reallocation. We are confident that will happen quickly."

This means one of three things. Either 2K Games shipped a paltry amount of copies to some areas, the game is selling like absolute crazy, or it's a little of both, with the game shipping a moderate amount and selling moderately well. Either way, it's better for a company to say they don't have enough games on the shelves than too many, so it's looking like Borderlands has, indeed, not been sent out to die.

So, Pachter... Is he ever right on any points or predictions (beyond obvious ones) or is he paid for shits and giggles?

I would guess it's the 'little bit of both' option. It's way early to say this game is selling like crazy.

I WOULD buy it if I didn't have Demon's Souls and Uncharted 2 to tide me over until Modern Warfare 2.

Sounds like good news for the developers. Good to see the game is probably doing well. It's hard not to support guys who buy everyone pizza at their panel.

I was in my local SoCal Target last night and saw a handful of copies for the PS3. In fact there were more games missing than this one. MGS4, Uncharted 2, even Ratchet N Clank.

I guess this is where DD is a plus as I'm getting the PC version on Steam next week.

I know it's sold out in a lot of places in Canada as Best Buy, Future Shop, and Wal-Mart have it for $40

I know when I went in to get mine yesterday, I nabbed the last copy. So, yeah, suck it Pachter.

Oh, game's a blast too.

I still think Pachter is right. Look, these game shortages are due the the hard core constituency of gamers who snap up decent looking titles such as these day of release. In order to compete sales-wise with the upcoming COD title, the rate of sales seen currently would have to continue for quite some time, which seems unlikely to me. Besides, do you think they really pressed as many games for this release as they will for COD?

Stole the snark right out of my mouth. Steam is just too sweet.

Another reason could be mass mfg defects. I know several Best Buy stores in my area (Texas) had to return the whole lot 'case they wouldn't work. That can certainly cause shortages...

I don't think my Steam preorder will sell out.

Got the game for $33 too with the 4-pack deal.

The wonders of digital distribution!

it would be cool if it sold a reasonable amount. we need more new IP's out there.

This game is atrociously fun co-op, and still very fun single player.
So you should all get it and contribute to the shortage.

Do getting a free game from the recent toys r us sale and exchanging it for a newer game(say Borderlands) count as a sale?

Glad I picked this up after all. Great game all around. I'll still be playing this well into next year. And of course, yet again, Patcher is wrong. You'd think he would grow tired of making false predictions.

Perhaps he's related to Miss Cleo.

One other issue that might be contributing is that in a slack economy, all buisness are looking for ways to save money. Inevntory costs stores money and plenty of retailers are simply cutting back on stock. I think Gearbox is using the store shortages as a bit of a media tool to hype the game up a bit more (can't blame them). Notice they never actually SAY there is a production shortage (i.e. they never said they didn't make enough copies...just that the games are not available in retail stores).

I got the LAST copy of this game as I called in on my lunch break.

When I went to pick it up the lady stated to a customer in front of me that they were sold out of the game for BOTH systems since lunch time. My buddy went in in the morning and there was roughly 10 copies left for the PS3 after he bought his so I dont think that they shipped a small amount.
