Destructoid had an opportunity to talk with Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford about PAX Prime's biggest surprise, Duke Nukem Forever. The outspoken developer discusses Duke's relevance, his chances against pretenders to the throne, and having balls of ... you know the rest.
It was great to chat with Randy and to check out the game. I am still struggling to comprehend the fact that I actually played Duke Nukem Forever. Absolutely bizarre!
Jim Sterling serves as reviews editor for Destructoid.com, head of the Podtoid podcast, and produces a number of news stories, original features, one-of-a-kind videos. Meet the rest of the team
Good interview. I like watching Randy Pitchford interviews, when Borderlands was coming out he always seemed so into it, and it doesn't seem any different when it comes to this game. Can't wait.
Pitchford's enthusiasm never changes. I've seen him give the exact same interview for Brother's in Arms, Borderlands, and Aliens: Colonial Marines. Gearbox needs a new face because I'm getting tired of looking at his.
Always love to see Pitchford interviewed. This is a day one buy.
I trust Gearbox to at least pull out a solid game at the very least.
However, I'm not hanging my hat on 2011. Remember how long Borderlands took? Remember how it changed over time, especially the look? Remember how many delays Hell's Highway saw? And how about Colonial Marines?
I hope to god it's 2011 and they don't catch the Broussard bug.
Randy Pitchford also said that the PC version of Borderlands was being delayed for "polish" and then releases a crippled piece of shit with a million DLC packs.
@Marley: Ty! Cool interview. I never had a chance to get into the Duke games(I bought the one on XBLA though) so I am intrigued, to say the least, about DNF. Also, Jim Sterling + Video = Win
It's already content complete. They're just tweaking, debugging and porting to 360 and PS3 right now. According to Pitchford the only reason they haven't announced a solid release date is that 2K hasn't given final approval on the exact date.
@Nzdjh
According to a Machinama documentary released before the project was revived, 3D Realms still had basically the same size staff it had back in 1997. It's hard to attract new people and increase team size after you've already spent most of your budget.
Just a little something. Take your reflective sunglasses off in an interview. To have a conversation going 2-ways you need to have eye contact, but instead he's now looking into a mirror, just as the spectators :/
I like how people are calling it overrated, even though it isn't out yet, I think they mean over-hyped. Haters gonna hate. Think I smell some fanboys too. I hope this game is good, but at least I know it's actually going to be released now.
Duke Nukem owes its notoriety and fame to its failure.
It was a failure because it was heavily invested on and hyped even before it got to prove itself. And it never did. Technically, the game did die. The original developers working in Gearbox are like those Digipen kids working at Valve and thinking that Portal is actually Narbacular Drop. The name was sold to Gearbox and now Gearbox is making a Duke Nukem game just as much as Epic and Croteam is making a Duke Nukem game. Jim calling those other games pretenders is irrelevant. Duke hasn't raised any bars so there's not much to copy that already exists in movies and TV.
I'll tell you this though. If other game news site journalists are has as much awe and excitement as Jim does, you can bet that Duke Nukem will get a 9 and above rating on Metacritic.
Now I am genuinely curious about Duke Nukem Forever. It's like some of the minor type boss characters that you completely write off and then out of nowhere come back with a vengeance. I just hope there will be contention from it as a game worthy of this generation.
How can "Duke Nukem" owe its fame and notoriety to its failure when the entire reason it was hyped to begin with was because it was a sequel to a franchise tons of people already loved?
I don't really respect the "relevant" card every goddamn journalist pulls. You guys are sometimes as sheepy (follow the herd, boy!) as the unwashed gaming public. Perhaps it has something to do with following your fellow twittering journos?
I might snap a neck if I hear too many buzzwords in a day. It digs in slow like a buzzsaw, to the point I think my noggin will asplode should I not slay the source of the irritation.
That said, DNF? So it's back to being in-the-oven, rather than on-the-backburner? Well, that's a thing. That happened. I'll reserve jud--- fuck that, I won't go with a gut reaction, but will wait to see guts to form a reaction. Good thing there'll be a demo.

Dat face!
Totally wicked
Moving on. Where the FUCK is Aliens: Colonial Marines from Gearbox?

I'll see if Duke is still the king!
