A lot of people -- including a few Destructoid staff members -- didn’t dig the so-called “weak” conclusion to Borderlands. I can’t agree with the assessment for a few reasons (one being my epic confrontation with you-know-who), but I understand the argument. More insightful than my reactions to the matter, though, are Paul Helquist’s, a senior designer for the game. He told MTV Multiplayer that Gearbox is going to keep the poor reception of the ending in mind going forward, in both downloadable content and full games in the future.
"We went through lots of different iterations on what the ending of the game was,” Helquist said. “We ultimately ended up with what you get to play. We didn't know how people were going to react to it. Obviously the reaction hasn't been as strong as we had hoped.
“That's something we're going to be keeping in mind as we do new things, whether it's download content or other games in the future. We're gonna think more about it and try to get more user feedback before the game comes out so we can ensure that we'll have endings that you guys like in the future."
Later, Helquist said that, at the least, the ending of Borderlands keeps the story open for sequels and content. The recent release of the “Zombie Island of Dr. Ned,” is proof of that. It picks right up where the game trails off. Hell, it even adds zombies to the core game without issue. Weird, right?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
it seemed too dumbed down and kiddy like, not enough real puzzle solving the the past greats had.
i doubt DLC will fix this, merely it will just add more of the same
*spo-- im spoiling nothing
Really just a big boss battle at the end? And he drops crap loot? At the end i was screaming wtf? I then told my friend that the lady better put out and as i said that it turns out shes a fking satellite. To this day i can't play the game see here and not say "shut up bitch your a satellite"
They did a good job with the pacing though, towards the end i was rushing to get to the end i think that was the best part of the story.
poorly implemented...
That is all.
The thing that's disappointing to me about the end is you can't fight that boss fight again. I wanted an endless Baal run type situation.
As for the end boss drops, Diablo didn't drop anything if I remember right. The only reason why we expect it here is how they handled the post boss implementation. Just not well thought out. Also they needed a deeper post game more than just replay the game. Maybe just a little please? Next time without DLC?
This brings up a good point. I honestly thought this game had the humor of a spoof more than it's own game. Point after point there was some sense of humor about it and I think even the boss was part of it. There is a guy with the last name of Durden that runs a fight club, there is a shotgun named Boomstick, the last boss.... the list goes on and on.
if you play this game for loot then you are missing out b/c this game is 80% of a great game. The loot and a story and interaction could have all been implemented, there's tons of ways other then going on scavenger hunts to occupy a player. in 3 years no one will be talking about borderlands, but people will still be talking about diablo II.
The entire game is in one slightly different garbage pile in a desert after another.
There is a cavern, and a dock and a few interiors. But nothing else to break up the monotony of what is otherwise - another garbage pile in a desert.
Totally fucking boring after a while.
Sadly, the game ends right after there is any change in map location or character. And it's those mountain maps that you don't have ANY missions to.
You just get to run through them. The AI was ass enough, that while supposedly under heavy attack all I had to do to elude enemies was, run to the end of the map.
The mini game that they stripped out of the game - to sell as an add on does look different, and had it been part of the 60 dollar game perhaps it might have justified what was- a 60 dollar game.
Huge disappointment.
Sold my copy on Amazon last week for 36 bucks. May the trade in stampede begin.
The ending was off, not because of the boss fight, but because the game just screeches to a stop there, as far as finale goes. (It's something games mess up on a lot, really.) All climax and no cool down; Nothing for you to coast into credits with.
This game blows.
Agreed. Every dungeon crawler I've ever played has at least a few different locales. Diablo II? Deserts, lush forests, underground crypts, jungles, etc.
Everything looks the same in Borderlands. I wasn't really excited to ever discover a new area. It also takes a week maximum to get max level, and you can't even farm the final boss again. I traded in my copy for $40 about a week ago.
Seriously some more environments, explinations on the characters, and more variety in the missions and you would have easily been looking at GOTY.its so sad,it had the concept and the execution, but it really needed polish.
But mabye the expansions will help that.
This game was seriously awesome though, definitely top 5 this year.
Borderlands isn't about the destination, it's about the journey getting there.
I for one loved how borderlands ended. I prefer the atypical endings where the guy doesn't exactly get the girl etc, or gets the girl and finds out it's a dude, or gets the girls whos not dude but is an alien bug thing...
I really dislike the usual endings in a game/movie.
So the ending in terms of story, wasn't shocking. What pissed me off about it was how stupendously easy it was. As a soldier all I needed to do was take out my rifle with the largest clip, stand and fire. Reload, fire. Rinse. Repeat. I didn't even move. By far the easiest boss, nay encounter, in the game.
I roleplayed the ending. I'm pretty sure I was saying the same things Lilith was.
it was like fallout, if fallout was boring, had no good characters or interesting storylines and was a totally shallow, mediocre shooting game.
Oh well, guess they'll listen to the fans and ruin their next game like Bethesda ruined The Elder Scrolls with Oblivion and Bioware will ruin the Mass Effect trilogy with Mass Effect 2!
ok so what the heck did the ending mean. I mean, I get that it's Pandora's "box" lol but ok, why did the lady in the vision want me opening it? I know why MY character wanted to open it (for the loot) but who is the person in the visions? And why did (I assume the lady in the satellite;vision lady)she turn on the claptraps ninja mode?
There needed to be some kind of closure to what was being setup. I can understand trying to leave it mysterious and open for a sequel, but maybe they could have done...more. IDK. All that we got was "Oh now we can discover the secrets of the technology in the vault" OK. How does that help my character?
It was a great game, dont get mewrong, but it needed an epilogue.
