Gearbox had the opportunity to make a Blade Runner game photo

If you ever wondered what a Blade Runner videogame could look like in today's gaming landscape, the above CryEngine 2 mock-up should be sufficient. According to a recent report from OXM, Gearbox could have been the developer to supply us with such an experience.

"One of my partners, Brian Martell, had Blade Runner on the list [of IPs we wanted to use]," said Gearbox president Randy Pitchford. "We chased it down and we coulda had it."

So, why then are we sitting here in the year 2009 with no Gearbox-developed Blade Runner game? It was a matter of making enough of a return on the investment, which Pitchford felt the studio wouldn't be able to pull off.

"You're going to spend 25 million, there's another 10-15 risk just in the publishing process, and then you got another 10-15 million marketing, and we didn't think that we could make that back. So that's too bad."

Who knows -- perhaps we'll one day see another game based on the film from a different development team? Crazier things have happened in this industry.

I own the old Blade Runner PC adventure game, I don't even think I'd seen the movie when I bought it but I had read an article about it in PC gamer and I had to have it.

The government should just donate money to develop this game. It's worth the risk.

@ArrestedDeveloper: I bought the game and watched the movie at the same time. Still got my copy. Someone give the license to Bioware, throw a shitload of money at them and I will be happy.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any current major developers who could approach this universe with the subtlety, restraint and depth it deserves.

*I'm sure if I put some thought into it I could think of one. Maybe. Probably not.

Isn't Deus Ex the Bladerunner videogame?

i remember the original being pretty good, other than the non-main character models. the environments were beautiful, even if taken straight from the source material.

I've been waiting for the return of core cyberpunk within mainstream gaming for awhile. This could have been the harbinger paving the way for a remake of William Gibson's Neuromancer. Recent IP's within the genre (remakes, updates and the like) haven't been up to snuff. Oh, to be walking the dystopian watery streets of China Town, glancing at the horizon of chemical flames blazing from the spires of Arcologies. This is my dream game.

Hehe. I also have the 6 discs Bladerrunner game laying around somewhere. That game was really good, containing all the scenery from the movie. No Harrison Ford or Rutger Hauer though :(

I can't wait to run another Voight-Kampff test on someone. MAKE THIS GAME!

Bladerunner being my all time bestest movies of all time of like ever , I demand a current gen Blade Runner inspired game , I could also do with a re-release of Snatcher on the PSP or on the virtual console kthxbai.

A modern Blade Runner game could be great. I hope someone takes the risk.

I doubt anybody could top the Westwood adventure game. Glad other people still own the old copies around here. I still dust the game off every year or so and just have a great night of gaming. This is how you do a movie tie-in!

At least Gearbox acknowledges how shitty they are as developers. I can't hold this against them.

As much as I would love to see a new Blade Runner game, I doubt it would be able to equal the awesomeness of the Westwood one. Still, even if it only partially succeeded, it would be worth checking out.

That's way too bad, the picture looks amazing. I could just imagine chasing an android down the dirty streets, newspapers flying in your face, scrambling up fire escapes and through art deco hotels and making grave mistakes trying to leap roof top to roof top with weird motion billboards in the back round with Harrison Ford narrating.
C'mon, who the hell wouldn't want to play this.

I loved the original game from Westwood studios (before EA tainted them). I read someone mentioned Bioware? A Blade Runner RPG? *squee*

I'm very glad this didn't happen, especially considering Randy's hatred of dialogue, populated NPC areas, and basically all things that don't involve shooting stuff.

If there is to be another Blade Runner game in the future, I'd prefer someone like Bioware handle it.

Fuckin' Pitchford. I think I hate him for this now. First it was all that Valve-hating, now this? Screw that guy.

considering that these guys are struggling with an aliens game (which should be the easiest game in the world to make), maybe it's better they stick to doing boring psuedo rpgs instead of screwing up good licenses.

I'm glad they made this wise business decision. That way they can fully focus on nothing but Borderlands DLC and BL 2.

I enjoyed the old point-and-click adventure Blade Runner game. Any Blade Runner game made today, by contrast, would probably just be another generic run-and-gun FPS or another fucking MehMehOh or something equally lame. So, yeah, I'm guess I'm kind of glad this didn't happen.
