Gearbox: Bungie and Infinity Ward should do something new photo

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has been talking about two of the most well-respect FPS developers in the business, Bungie and Infinity Ward, claiming that while he has big respect for what they do, he's waiting for a brand new idea from the teams known almost exclusively for the Halo and Call of Duty franchises.

"I keep waiting to hear what Bungie is going to do that’s not Halo," explains the man whose studio is currently making Borderlands. "Those guys are amazing, right? They walk on water! And the same with Infinity Ward. It’s like, dude I’m totally psyched to get my Call of Duty fix every year, but you guys are amazing! What else have you got? Can you give me something I haven’t seen before?

"The folks that are innovating need to be rewarded so that the folks that are making big bets can take that risk. It’s too big of a risk for Infinity Ward to do anything but what they’re doing, because there’s too much value and there’s really big scope for it."

I'd certainly love to see what these studios can cook up outside of the Halo and Modern Warfare franchises, definitely. Like Pitchford says, however, it's often too big a risk to break out from the norm, especially when you've found a winning formula that customers are guaranteed to drop money on time and time again. It's sad, but that's life.

Taking a risk and making a new IP is the difference between a good studio like Bungie and the best studio in Blizzard.

I was really excited about ODST before I knew it was a fucking Halo 3 expansion.

And, well, Activision is not unpopping Call of Duty in any second as we know their tactics now and Microsoft, well, you know.

How about Call of Duty ánd something new? I mean they must've made millions from COD4 alone. They can risk something right?

I have to agree with Gearbox, from a financial point of view it's hard to get funding with experimental projects when repetition is the key to a lot of companies success.

I'm looking more foreward to Borderlands than for Halo3 and CoD4 together.
Somebody gotta be innovative.

Blizzard hasn't made a new IP in 11 years.
Fumito Ueda's team however has never done a sequel... I know most games share an universe but Randy Pitchford's complaint is about innovation and all of their games are different from each other

Oh and I see Activision replying "OH HEY WE GOT A NEW IP, MODERN WARFARE! IT'S NOT WITH THE CALL OF DUTY TITLE ANYMORE"

Get over it.

Sometimes something new just for the sake of something new doesn't work. Take a look at Damnation.

And games generally get better in successive sequels. The developers don't have to reinvent the wheel in a sequel, so they can make the game deeper and more fun. Take a look at the progression from Halo 1, in which the game had LAN only multiplayer, to Halo 3, with near flawless matchmaking and file sharing integrated with Bungie.net. What's so wrong with some studios doing what they do well?

And Infinity Ward may seem like they aren't being innovative, but until Call of Duty 4, the series was all about WWII. So I'd say they took a big risk with COD4, and that was only 2 years ago.

Is insomniac a lot bigger than Bungie? They seem to be able to leap frog franchises year after year (Ratchet & Resistance). Yet Bungie, until recently, could only release a game every 3 years. Granted Ratchet doesn't have online on the current gen consoles (yet) and while I enjoy Resistance it doesn't have the same level polish as a Halo game (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

Anyway I'd like to see Bungie try something new - as long as it doesn't involve magic, trolls, dragons, wizards. elves or anything like that. And as long as they can release quality Halos games every now and then.

Halo is fun on occasion, but I'm not really one that gets super excited over it. I'll leave that to the frat boys when they have their downtime from Madden 09. I really would like to see Bungie do something non-Halo related.

sickNasty:

I think the point is that Randy wants new stuff from big developers that are proven to be quality developers. The problem with a lot of new games is they come from new studios, many of which are fucking awful. Damnation is a case in point.

It's not that IW and Bungie are doing anything wrong, it's that if they did announce something brand new, it would probably be well worth watching. I know I'd certainly take interest if IW announced a completely original project and was attempting to take on a new genre.

Didn't Bungie say they were working on 3 separate games. One was ODST, the second is Reach and the third is unannounced. Unless something has happened since then.

I don't disagree. It'd certainly be nice to see separate offerings from both of these studios, as well as several others.

@Monodi: Shut up.

@Original post: I don't know much about Infinity Ward, but I'm certain Bungie has something in the works that isn't Halo related. All the Halo games being released now are being done by smaller groups in the very large company.

"was really excited about ODST before I knew it was a fucking Halo 3 expansion."

Which is vastly different and introduces new gameplay mechanics, if it was a mere expansion it would have been it would be the master chief in a new location so I don't see what's the issue.

And no studio is gonna try a new IP in the current economic climate, especially when they actually come out, nobody cares about them and this happens with plenty of studios including well known ones.

Borderlands sounds really interesting but I can't help but feel that it might bomb, I hope not.

we need bigger and better location transitions. like with the battle front 3 video. we need future games where it like warhawk but all over space/planets.

we need a game like with features from
MAG(alot of players/different factions) +
SW battefront 3 (space travel) +
warhawk (air and ground vehicles) +
killzone 2 (multiple changing objectives/classes.squads) +
maybe some resource management for building space ships and mother ships.
and maybe something kinda like UT onslaught mode but on multiple planets. and well i guess it would be an MMO

a space/future online shooter with multiple factions.
you can fight ground/air battles on different planets with somewhat local vehicles.
but certain special space ships can travel into space, where you can still fight space battles, and goto another planet if your faction needs you. if you can make it alive.
of course you would need classes to fix/ build vehicles, spawn weapons/ammo,pilots etc. front line infantry.

once in space there might be factions specific space station where you can change class/weapons meet up with squads mates and join up for an assault on another planets that one of the other factions is controlling.
you can use resources you have collected at the space to buy upgrades weapons, vehicles etc.
fighting/killing other players/completing objectives etc. give resources.to your factions totals bank account maybe.

you could have big mother ships (that can be destroyed by players flying other ships etc) that can shoot at planets and take out alot of people(your own as well if not careful)

or something

space ships are personl transports maybe some up to 4 other players that can travel into and out of planets . but mother ships you can fight on/in to try and destroy them. but cant goto planets

DO WANT new games, Bungie.

With the success of Halo and Call of Duty 4, I can't imagine these companies aren't rolling in money and aren't able to have a LITTLE bit of say in what they do next.

I mean, Bungie keeps saying they're moving on to other stuff but obviously MS wants them to stick with Halo for as long as humanly possible and will throw blank checks at them to continue doing so.

Can't these companies AT LEAST make some Xbox Live or PSN games between projects? We'd get our new IPs, and they would make a few bucks because people would eat these games up based on pedigree alone.

Fine, fine, ODST is looking great as it is too, but I was expecting something much different that wasn't related to that universe. The slightly cartoony icon that appeared somewhere in the visors of the first teaser trailer made me imagine of a game about robots or something like that. I just see it as an overused concept now but hwatever the fans like.

Borderlands is near the top of my "wanna play so bad" list!

I think that Infinity Ward did take a risk with COD4 in bringing the franchise out of the WW whatever era and bringing in the "modern". Playing COD:WaW was almost painful for me. It will be interesting to wait and see if they do any innovations with the new game, or stick to a rather formulaic success...

oh.. and @fetusmilk... the next iteration of Warhawk is rumoured to be Starhawk... possibly interplanetary or something... and it absolutely tops my "wanna play so bad!" list! :)

As long as they keep making great games, it doesn't matter to me. I mean, sure, new IPs would be awesome, but I'm not going to beg for them. Whatever these two make will more than likely be good, so we'll just have to wait and see what they throw our way.

when Gearbox makes that multi-million unit moving, strong year round selling, console pushing, huge fanbase following game, than i wonder if they will live up to their own spoken words of today.

Im sure developers always want to work on something new. Its up to their producers that are paying the bill.

While I may agree with this mans sentiments, that fact that he:

A) Doesn't know that IW don't release a CoD game on a yearly basis.

B) Is willing to ignore that fact in order to get himself into the news.

Shows he is in no position to comment on anything. Maybe if Gearbox had developed anything worth a damn since the Half-Life 1 expansions they would be in a position where people would willingly buy sequels to their games.

I think "new" is over rated, at the end most people even here is gonna waste more hours on modern warfare 2 than borderlands.. sure it looks "new" and innovative but lets get real is not gonna be better value than MW2 or Halor Reach.. even odst.

Just because something's new doesn't mean it has to reinvent the wheel.

Take Epic for example. They had their huge following with Unreal. They stuck with that franchise from 1998 to 2004 Then made Gears of War. It's still an action game, but it feels way different to Unreal Tournament. I think BOTH Bungie and Infinity Ward should follow Epic's example.

While they do both make good games, the fact that they cling to their one franchise could come back to bite them in the ass one day, even the most loyal of fans get tired of the same rehashes eventually..

I want new Nintendo IP's but it doesn't happen does it? Everyone is quite content to get sequels and remakes non-stop from them so what's the difference? As long as the games are good, I suppose I don't really give a crap, someone else can make new games. They were the new IP's at some point so lets see someone else make a seminal franchise.
Besides, IW re-invenvted CoD with 4 and the multiplayer was a revelation, Bungie look like they are doing some different stuff too.
There are new IP's out all the time and they don't all suck do they?

While I agree, it would be interesting to see what both companies could do if they moved into new territories, there's also something to be said for how much work both companies have put into refining and perfecting their respective areas of the shooter genre. Chances are if you walk into a room of gamers %90+ of them will think either Halo 3 or CoD 4 is the best shooter ever made, and that's impressive.

It's also a little funny to see a comment like this coming from a studio who's basically spent their entire 10 years of existence porting Half-Life and Halo or developing more Brothers in Arms games.

Personally I'd much rather have 1 excellent franchise game than 50 shitty new IPs... not that I'm saying Borderlands isn't going to rock I'm almost certain it will in fact rock. Besides, I'm sure most people will agree Modern Warfare 2 will be one of the best games of this year, you just know Infinity Ward will deliver, they always do... Bungie on the other hand...

i disagree as much as i love me some mw2, i don't need to see a 3,4,5....i think he is right, the industry and fps in general need more innovation, not just sequels which really just update gameplay a la halo->halo 2->halo 3.

I think Bungie mostly sees the Halo games as one project. One that they evolve (or try to) with each installment. After Reach, they should have quite some cash and time to work on other things though. Before they start work on the inevitable post-Halo 3 game for next-gen :P

Actually, if they would do a NEW Halo game for next-gen, it would likely be around 2015? Would go nicely alongside a Halo movie if they ever start work on that.

Don't really care what IW does. They changed a lot from COD2 to COD4 and I am fine with them doing what they do well. There's enough FPS variety games anyway.
