Gearbox and Rebellion have friendly Aliens rivalry photo

It must be odd for two studios to be working on the same game license simultaneously, but that's the situation Gearbox Software and Rebellion find themselves in. Both studios are creating their own Aliens FPS for Sega -- Gearbox has Aliens: Colonial Marines while Rebellion has Aliens vs. Predator. According to Rebellion, this has led to a friendly rivalry between the two.

"I think if we all want to produce the best possible game at the end of the day you've got to use your own imagination but keep pace with what other people are doing. We're gamers as well and want as many good games as we can get in our hands," says senior producer for AvP David Brickley. "There's been some high-level contact at trade shows, stuff like that. Gentle ribbing and the trading of drunken ideas but nothing co-operative in that sense."

Despite the fact that both games are set in the Aliens universe, however, Brickley contends that direct comparisons aren't quite right: "There's no point in being direct competition in that sense. Certainly [Colonial Marines is] a game that's focused very much on the USCN so for that reason alone we've taken it in all sorts of different directions."

Now that Borderlands is done and dusted, I hope Gearbox can start talking about Colonial Marines soon. I'm really looking forward to AvP, but I must admit that the more Aliens-focused game has captured my imagination just that little extra bit. That said, I might just be more interested because it's been so elusive.

I must admit I more interesting in playing as a xenomorph than shooting them once again.

Friendly rivalry; No such thing. These studios are competing for our cash, and business is serious business-ness. However rivalry only becomes unfriendly when some knob-end starts spouting off about how their games penis engine is clearly better than so and so's toilet engine.

This could be an issue of semantics, or maybe this is a precursor to the pissing contest.

I just realised these are two separate games. What a melting pot of creativity the games industry is today.

They're two different games: One's basically living out your Aliens/Predators/Colonial Marines fantasies while the other is what a Aliens movie feel like.

Both titles should rock. Given the depth, back-story, history, and creativity, plus the fact the previous AvP titles rocked, I easily predict a Halo-killer that will molest Master Chief's dead body.

How can there be any rivalry when Gearbox can't even make their game and Rebellion seems to have sculpted a truly great looking game in half the time?

and god, borderlands was boring. I only played the first few missions but it felt so sluggish, there was no decent story or characters to keep it going and constant looting got tedious fast. If they do ever manage to start work on colonial marines, I hope it's better than that.

If you bought Borderlands for the story, you obviously didn't research the game very much....Its an FPS with a few RPG elements (and a decent story isn't really on top of that RPG elements list).

I'll admit it takes some time to get a new character going, but it's far from boring once you get above LVL 10 and move on to some of the "meatier" areas.

To be fair I didn't buy it, I traded in for it. And while I didn't expect a great story (though the earlier previews before it's cell shaded turn make me think it was meant to have more of a story than it does now), I hoped for something decent.

Maybe it does get better when you reach level ten, but I thought it was such a chore to play I won't find out, since it's being traded in for dragon age origins.
