GDC 2010 sees record attendance, over 18,000 attend photo

It looks like the San Francisco Game Developers Conference set an all-time record for attendance last week.

According to UBM TechWeb Game Network, the group who organized the conference, 18,250 attendees flooded the Moscone Convention center to meet with and learn from game developers. This is up over a thousand from last year's attendance, which hovered around 17,000.

These numbers are interesting -- being at the convention, it seemed the show had actually been scaled back this year. Clearly I was mistaken. Next year's show may be even bigger -- it's already been scheduled to be held from Monday, February 28 to Friday, March 4.

18,250 attendees flooded the Moscone Convention center to meet with and learn from game developers. This is up over ten thousand from last year's attendance, which hovered around 17,000.

That second paragraph makes no sense to me?

"According to UBM TechWeb Game Network, the group who organized the conference, 18,250 attendees flooded the Moscone Convention center to meet with and learn from game developers. This is up over ten thousand from last year's attendance, which hovered around 17,000."

18,250 attendees this year.
17,000 last year.

That's what, an increase of only 1,000-ish, no where close to 10,000. Is that a typo, and if so, which number? Was there 28,250 people this year?

Its okay, Nick. At least you didn't divide by zero, right? Otherwise the world might have imploded.

I agree with you, that it seemed smaller than previous years.

I see two possibilities:

1) The move from Moscone-West to Moscone-North/South made the numbers feel smaller, even though there were more people there.

2) They're lying about the numbers.

I feel fairly certain that the show floor was much smaller than previous years - if they start claiming it was bigger, I'd definitely call BS.
