The previous game in this series really didn't impress me too much, it was a little too much of an RPG for my tastes. The new Super Paper Mario changes that by making the game play more like the original Mario -- with a few new tricks thrown in for good measure. The game control hasn't been too Wii-afied, either. There were some Wiimote tricks put in the game, but you still use the d-pad and buttons like the original Mario. Hooray!

My friends are stoked for this one. I'm conflicted.

Might as well just call this, "Fucking Awesome Mario."

am i the only one that this doesn't look really cool to?

Wow, while not to the same extent, this uses the mechanics found in that PSP game I will most likely never play (unfortunatly) 'Crush". This has me excited, it looks badass.

Really, this game doesn't look cool at all. watching more videos of it on gamevideos.com. they are just taking the original Super Mario Bros. levels and adding another dimension that you can travel through the level, or at least that is what it seems.

I am absolutely not wowed at all. Especially since this is yet another game that was originally for the Gamecube and was delayed to get released on the Wii. not cool.

So the question is did Crush see these gameplay mechanics and use them better or did Crush not know a thing about Mario and is 100% original?
Namelessted's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/07/2007 19:05

but Crush actually looks cool. It is an original IP and its great what that is doing to the platformer. I just don't like seeing Mario in this realm, i don't know why. I pretty much love all mario games from the original, to Mario Kart, to Mario 64, to Tennis to Party. I really enjoyed the previous Paper Mario games as well, this one just looks really gay.

the fucking PIXLS are fucking retarded.

Man, I LOVED the RPG elements in the last Paper Mario. Call me a heathen, but the return to the 2D (pseudo 3D) is kinda disappointing.

Is there a reason for the numbers popping up when you stomp an enemy or is it just to get the Paper Mario look? Seems to me there might be some RPG elements to lv up Mario to obviously do more damage.

I'm kind of with namelessted on this one. I'm pretty underwhelmed by these videos, though I was originally stoked about this game.

For me, at least, the original Paper Mario as well as Thousand Year Door were all about the RPG stuff. That's why I liked them. But they're apparently taking a lot of the RPG elements out of this game, and making it into just another standard Mario game, and calling this a good thing? I don't think so. I mean, there's nothing wrong with the tried-and-true Mario formula in general, but the past Paper Mario games were cool because they weren't just another typical Mario game.

Also, I have a feeling that the whole "spin around to rotate the view 90-something degrees" thing will get horrendously old and annoying after the first five minutes or so, but maybe that's just me.

Yeah, I'll probably still get the game, clueless fawning Nintendo-fanboy that I am after all, and will likely enjoy it for what it is, but so far it seems as if it'll be missing the awesome that was in the previous Paper Mario games.

Personally, I really liked the RPG elements of the previous Paper Mario games. I'm a bit disappointed that this is more of a platformer. Nintendo needs more RPGs

At least they're not using the standard 3D Mario graphic that I'm getting kind of tired of seeing. I definitely prefer Mario in sprite form, and Paper Mario's graphics always seemed like a very reasonable compromise in modern times. A shame about the loss of RPG elements, but the Wii needs a Mario game, and Super Mario Galaxy won't be out until the fall.

I have to agree with Namelessted, Im OK, and SicPOS. This game is looking to not be like the RPG I just finished and really enjoyed,i.e. Thousand Year Door. As such this game has gone from a first release buy to wait for reviews until I decide to get it or wait till its on the cheap.

@Grim:

"I probably would've loved playing this two years ago on my gamecube, but now it's just too little too late."

What has changed in the last two years that would make a good game concept a bad one? I can't think of a reason why I would want to play a game if it came out for Gamecube but would balk at it if it came out for Wii. Would you play this if it came out on PS2/3? Or perhaps more directly, what is it about the Wii that drags this game down?

That might be the most beautiful looking artwork and design I've ever seen in a game. And Intelligent Systems are probably the best game devs out there (wario ware etc), can't wait to play this one.

um last I checked the RPG elements were what the game was supposed to be! it was basically the sequel to super mario RPG!! why the hell would they take out all the RPG stuff and still call it paper mario? this is a shame!

My feelings exactly.

Show a 20 second clip of Mario jumping on enemies, and you've got a swarm of people saying, "this looks like a lot of fun!" How hypocrytical of people to call the release of late Gamecube games on Wii "revolutionary".

But then, Twilight Princess still got perfect 10 ratings everywhere. Why not try a few more ports, since people will obviously buy it.

How do you guys know that it isn't an RPG anymore? That clip is 30 seconds long, and of the first level. Gamevideos have about a 2 minute clip. What makes an RPG? Turn based fighting?

I think this game looks beautiful.
Im OK's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/08/2007 07:39

Well, one of the clips on Gamevideos describes the game as "previous games were 80% RPG/20% action, but this is probably the exact opposite of that".

Most of the things I've read about this game have said that the RPG elements from the previous games would be given much less of a focus in favor of the traditional Mario platform-style elements.

I, personally, still think the game could be cool in its own way, but that it simply won't have quite the same appeal that the previous Paper Mario games had.

Picture the Bowser platform levels from Thousand Year Door, except that the whole game is like that. Actually, I'm not sure that would be a totally bad thing, if they flesh it out well enough.

TheDruid said: "And Intelligent Systems are probably the best game devs out there (wario ware etc), can't wait to play this one." Not to mention Super Metroid and Puzzle League.
I too enjoyed the rpg elements of Paper Mario, that's what initially drew me to the game. I am not that huge of a Mario fan, and I think that his 2d platforming is getting a little stale. (SM Sunshine is a different story)
