Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

The last leg of my shakycam GDC tour quickposts is the demonstration of how the media center within Home works, and the room of doom: a personal trophy ampitheater of your best achievements in the games you've played. The prospect is very exciting: capture your best in-game footage and your merits all in a place that your friends can visit. When he overlooks the balcony to the ocean of trophies it reminded me of a mix between the grand Star Wars conference room and electric fetuses in the Matrix. Exploring this world seemed fun, but seemed slow despite PSP warp points. I waited but it never came: no mounts, Hummers, or suicide jetpacks. Well, they have until Fall to fix it.

So what do you guys think of the interface?  I'm both impressed but am on the fence -- I have usability concerns.  This is completely visual, which is a far departure from the OS-like approach on the Xbox 360. This concerns me: just like VRML was too cumbersome to actually serve any purpose, I feel like something about this needs to behave more like software or have a software-like alternative we can access without having to run from point A to point B.

So that's it for me. The guys and gals will soon be returning from their interviews and I'm running off to eat a boxed lunch and explore the floor, wish me luck!

My thoughts? Looks good. Looks like Mii's on steroids crossed with an MMO. Seems like overkill compared to the simplicity that is XBLive.

The teleportation with the PSP seems like it would take care of the "walking" issue.

I wish they would concentrate on games rather than this crap. I've been saving up and considering a 360 or a PS3. This demo doesn't make me want a PS3, although Heavenly Sword does. But, that's one game. Show me more Sony. My money is your's to lose.

And, Luck!

Also, cocks.

Yea I would have to agree with you Niero; it does look cool, but they need also the alternative of a OS-based achievement system. Otherwise, it would just be a real pain to look at any of you friend's trophy's or even your own. You shouldn't need to run a marathon to do it...then it's like homework or something. But the option of the trophy-room is a cool idea.

Exactly. I get tired just thinking about it

So, was there any word on pricing for this or is it going to be completely ad driven?

The whole home thing is really going to hook loads of people. Kids just cant get enough of avatars and virtual rooms/houses, and you know those kids are gonna pony up to buy the same tracksuit and kicks they just bought at the mall for their avatar.

The trophy room is interesting, looks a bit like the bat-cave, but they seemed to have missed the point with acheivements. Its not about which achievements you get, its about how many. The simple number that a gamerscore represents encourages competition and even drives people to buy or at least rent games they dont even like. Looks like Sony are still missing out on that.

However the get-stuff-from games-for-your-home thang might work. Sure t-shirts/wallpapers blah blah, but if you can unlock an item which is the girls from DOA hanging out in your crib, just by buying the game people would probably want that.

so this is going to make all the PS3 owners glad they bought one Sony?

So wait. What's the purpose of this other than having a giant virtual chatroom? Obviously you can't create your own shit like you do in Second Life, you can only download (probably by microtransactions) extra items. So its like a gimped, but visually pretty, version of Second life with little minigames added? I thought Sony was 'never going to sell its customers on a gimmick'. This sounds like just as big a gimmick as Nintendo's stupid Mii characters.

/360 fanboy atm

Totally agree about the usability issue. It's kinda like Raving Rabbids on Wii - the worst part of that game was having to make Rayman go into a new door in order to play the next minigame. After the first couple of times, it gots incredibly annoying. Just let me pump my carrot juice, dammit!!!

@wintermute: I'm with ya on the trophy room thing, if they're all just trophies, they might as well just be a numerical gamerscore. However, if they made the achievements more tangible- say the guitars I unlocked in Guitar Hero 3 also showed up in my living room, it'd become a totally different kind of incentive.

It certainly looks cool and will woo a lot of people when they first see it... but when this becomes available, how often are people really going to use it? I like in the 360 how I can hit the center X and boom, I can see my gamerscore instantly. With this, you have to exit whatever you're doing, sit through a loading screen or two, and then finally you're in a virtual world where all your "achievements" reside. I'm sure it'll be amazing the first couple of times you visit this little world, but how often will people really use it? It seems to me like one of those things that will be cool for a couple of days and then people will just forget about it.

I'm with DJ Duffy on this one. As long as they offer an alterative, or the ability to turn this shit off, it should be fine. The concept behind it is sound, but the execution is grossly overdone, much like the PS3 itself ironically enough.

Really, this reminds me of the "MS Home" interface in WIN95 where you had this living room with a a dog named Bob who would run and get your documents and shit for you. It was horrible too and died a quick death at the hands of double clicking on the windows desktop to open your files. I imagine this will do the same.

I love this idea, yea it might be more of a hassle but am I don't really need to know my gamescore in an instant. Actually makes me want to go out and by a Ps3 now.

I think you mean to say "fittingly enough." It'd be on the ironic side if it was grossly understated. Sony needs to learn that less is sometimes more, much much more.

The creaking sound in the video got to me. Home looks like a cute diversion. Nice graphics and some very good ideas at play here. Execution will be everything.

Call me practical, but the clinical look of the 360 Dashboard work just fine for me. More importantly, it gets me gaming and connected to media, friends and whatever VERY quickly.

Ugh....Sony..So busy trying to go feature for feature with every other console that they're forgetting that all we want to do is play some GAMES.

Why does this seem pointless to me? I don't want to play another "game" and look at all the cool things I've done in games or what somebody else has done. Pointless...

I agree with the people that unlockable home items from games you play is a pretty cool but the game trophies is too much. That and why would I want to watch a trailer on some small TV screen when I can download the trailer to fit my entire screen in HD? Seems like too much if you ask me.

I'm a 360/wii guy, but I'll admit that this seems like a cool idea. I think its downfall is that its not integrated into the PS3 experience through its os, like the 360's community features are. This is more like a separate game that you need to load up, and that's going to stunt the growth of the community's eco-system. That's half assed execution.

Interesting idea, I hope they work on it enough to get it to really work without too much hassel though...

like when the guy was watching the trailer, he zoomed in by actually walking up to it and trying to position himself perfectly... in situations like that they need to offer you a click-zoom process that is easier then moving around a 3d environment...

This is a nice addition to the PS network which I really think is quite cool, but as has been said they need to not force you into it but offer it in conjunction with a regular OS environment that is streamlined rather then GTA point A-Z structure

Did he say other people can come walk around in your little homes as well, because that would be cool. what would be cooler though is if people can create environments in the public sphere so that people can host chatrooms...

No one's saying it, so I will.... Second Life HD. In two years, it's going to be so monotized and commercialized that it will be just like SL is now. Bogged down with ad space and promotions everywhere, bullshit user-generated content and hacks, lets not forget about 'dem hackers people. Just wait...

Also, where does PS Store come in now? With everything that is shown and capable with HOME, PS Store is now irrelevant to distribute a lot of content.

PS Store is all the more relevant with Home, the problem is interface rather then the store... i think they already have the foundation of the store set in place enough that it can easily be programmed into this thing...

The issue is will it be usable enough that I care that it exists or is it just going to be a bloody hassle.
