Home #GDC

The much-rumored Home product on the PS3 was demonstrated moments ago here at GDC, which received thousands of simultaneous jaw drops and hooting and hollering from video game journalists. The system is extremely impressive -- we can't wait to set up the Destructoid pad and have everybody over!

As we sat there marveling at this glossy UI and listening to the promise of "Game 3.0", it dawned on us that the people from Second Life must be kicking puppies and babies on the way back to their hotel rooms. Luckily, a free MMO and a system with a free one wrapped in a $600 pricepoint are two completely different markets.

Anyhow, a glossy clip was produced by game videos but if you want to know what it was like to be there with a bad pair of eyeglasses, here's some shakycam footage. Stay through to the end where the Sony rep intended to type "Hi" but missed it by a sexy vowel. Our connection here is atrocious as usual with these events, so please allow a few moments to process the video.

Look at all the happy avatars, they're happy they have a community now!

How many kids will get on this and just kick other avatars in the nuts? Seriously. XBL is bad enough with the madness.

emotes = emos?

The chick talking is all futuristic.. Im just typing as Im watching.

"Infinitly more exciting than anything on any other consoles"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH WTF.... that wasn't bias at all.

Im happy for Sony. Hope they release a decent version before summer!

Aw, it cuts off. Is there more? Someone mentioned in an email that you wouldn't want to walk, but it looks as though you can teleport using your virtual PSP instantaneously. What happens when you get millions of people in this world all at once? That "hub" area didn't look very big to me. That and, How long does this thing take to load?

Wow something I am completely not interested in...other then the ability to launch groups into games...the whole SL MMO thing is lame.

Looks pretty neat, it also looks a lot like the sims online with better graphics. Hopefully they release some cool games to take advantage of this.

A mix of the MMO and Console. I am a Nintendo Fanboy and I think sony has got something here.

the possibilities for this thing are out of control, imagine hanging out with friends from other universities in you virtual living room showing off your statue of solid snake because you beat the game in under 4 hours, or watching a video of you completely hammered on your virtual bigscreen with everyone laughing their asses off. then deciding to play rainbow six and have everyone group drop into the lvu campus!?!?!!? this is fucking amazing!!! i don't even think sony can really fuck this one up! *checks savings account*

Finally...a really innovative idea for the PS3. SL is kind of lame..but with this I could see real potential in the online clan arena of things..and finding friends through the service in ways other than through a game title.

So Sony IS trying. I'm pretty impressed with this and that physics based platformer. Very good stuff, maybe they can turn their evil image around.

I'm surprised, this actually looks pretty cool. This feature still doesn't make up for the cost or lack of games, but it is a feature that differentiates its self from the Xbox and Wii.

Home looks better than I thought it would, it seems like a game I wouldn't buy but for free why not? If nothing else I hope this torpedos Second Life, I hate that game. But my question is will you be able to throw in game penis' at people?

lets quit hating on sony here for a second guys, they acually did somthing positive for a change.

I think the concept is pretty neat honestly. i think people are really underestimating PSHomes potential. if this becomes a very big thing i would not be shocked at all.

it all depends on the community. and while true, the kiddies can and will turn this into a porofanity laced virtual world. only time will tell.

other than acually having to pay to furnish your PSH (I will not pay for ANYTHING i can't officially own) I think its diffrent enough to that while sure it shares aspects with alot of thing (mii's gamerscore, SL) theres is absolutley NOTHING like this on any console.

first of all, what the hell was the multiplayer game in the first video?

This does look pretty cool, but is this really going to sell systems? It makes a nice feature to go with your PS3, but hardly something that will make you buy the system. Seeing as this is supposed to be there big counter to live I don't know well it will compete. People buy 360's for the live experience, but this seems more like something that people who buy PS3's for the big name exclusive brands might just check out. But who knows, "only time will tell!"

Man.... that music is relaxing as hell...

...oh right, the Home thing. I personally think it's a great idea. As others have said before me, I wouldn't pay money for it, but for free? Why not?

I personally think this is a great step towards attracting customers who are of the un-hardcore sort. I'm looking forward to seeing how Sony plays their cards, and I'm hoping that they play it right.

...And will Japan get something similar? At the moment, the whole concept seems very Western oriented.
