Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Unfortunately we weren't able to live blog the Phil Harrison keynote address, so I've been relegated to just reporting the aftermath and what occurred to you here.

Before you hit the jump and see what happened, let me say this bit of editorial coming from a very objective standpoint: This is huge. This is what will make the PlayStation 3 worth owning. In one year, Sony could take down Second Life, Miis, and Microsoft's XNA program. This is what Sony should have launched with, but is it too late? I don't think so.

I'm going to make this as easy to read as possible by using a series of bullet points to convey everything that was said. But, the big thing for Sony now is the term "Game 3.0." They use the term as a way of describing today's gaming culture and what is possible, a world where we're all connected and sharing content, etc. Here we go:

• Defining Game 3.0: It is about the connected device, with dynamic content and active connected communities, open standards Social, content creation, collaboration, and customization. Sony is not trying to claim Game 3.0 as a trademark, it's just how they like to think about it. To them, it's all about community, about cooperation, and being powered by the audience who is at the center of the entertainment experience.

• home: home is basically like the Second Life and Mii killer all in one big package. You will be able to customize yourself and environment fully in a well-detailed 3D environment. There is voice chat support as well as preset expressions and sayings.

• home: It will launch later this year and be located as a new icon on the PS3 cross media bar. You will "launch home," Press X to connect, sign in and then thrown into the online world. When you land, you go in "central lounge." You can bring up a virtual PSP and use it for various functions within home.

• home customization: PS3 games will unlock content specific to your character. home is a 3D community that is a social networking service where you can express yourself the way you want.

• home: Dynamic advertising will be pushed into the space. Banner ads are actual banners. HD-quality video can be streamed inside space -- ads, game trailers, etc.

• home public spaces: There is a games lounge -- basically a low intesity environment where you can play easy and simple multiplayer games. Also have trailers streamed in throughout with sound you can walk up to that changes in volume as you get closer or further away. Can walk up and play pool, there's a virtual bowling alley and they have embeded arcade game cabinets -- you can download arcade games in them and they show up as virtual arcade machines.

• home: You can quick travel with virtual PSP which will include a world map feature. Everyone at home has their own private apartment that you will be able trick out. There are different wallpapers that will be available -- can have game-branded wallpaper as well. You can have your own clan club room and download additional furniture -- free or premium items or linked to a game.

• home: The furniture in home is physics based -- can pile all on top of each other if you want. Can display any content on your PS3 hard drive and put up in the apartment and anyone can go in your room and see that. You will be able to walk up to a picture frame and grab a picture or video from your memory stick and display it to anyone in the room.

• home: You will really be able to pimp out your house/apt. You can put premium items in the space, like a pool table. You'll be able to have a deck and have a full-scale party. Music can be streamed to other users, as well as video.

• home Cinema: There will be content available from different TV and movie studios and users themselves. There will be user selected spaces where you can see different trailers, etc., and everything will update with the latest content available. Sony is working with grouper.com to bring in user content. Users will be able to access TV shows just by walking in the door of your choice. You can even walk in with friends and chat about it.

• home sports Lounge: For developers, Sony is saying it's very simple to build. Devs can reuse content for their own games. Users can go into sub rooms with mini games -- they showed a driving range, 3-point shootout. Speaking to devs, Harrison says it will be really easy and simple and powerful to bring community to the dev's game brands.

• home Hall of Fame: This is a brand new experience for PS Network -- think Xbox 360 achievement system but on a grander scale. You can customize your physical environment and view trophies you got based on achievements in a game. You can invite a friend into the trophy room -- keep in mind trophies are in full 3D and unique to the game/achievement. Trophies can even animate. (Loco Roco was shown, hasn't been announced). But, it's not just about the games you own, but the entire network and seeing what other people have done -- room looks like the Star Wars council hall.

• Final details of home: Unique, real-time 3d community for the PS Network; free to download and use; avatar based community; public and private space; infinitely customizable; in future, have pets more sophisticated clothing; large scale beta begins April 2007, service launches Fall 2007.

• SingStar: Harrison says this embodies the game 3.0 experience -- SingStore, SingStar Live. There will be weekly contests and you'll have a "my SingStar Online" profile.

• SingStar: You can see what friends are singing and how people have commented on your performances. You will be able to go to the Sing store and download songs you want to sing -- even stream video previews through server. Tracks you buy will download in the background. With "My media gallery," you can record your performances with Eye Toy and share them with people on the PS Network with SingStar.

• SingStar: Coming out in May/June in PAL, later this year in U.S. Sony wants to work closely with record industry to expand the song list.

• PlayStation Edge: Sony is sharing core tool and technology with all PS3 devs with respect to the game they are making. It will cover two key areas: GCM Replay (profiling tool that works with chip inside PS3) and SPU Geometry processing, animation, compression. Info will be shared via dev network.

• LittleBigPlanet: The guys that made Rag Doll Kung Fu are making this game. They have formed a development company called Media Molecule.

• LittleBigPlanet: The main "character" is a little stuffed animal, cutesy guy with a zipper up the front. The makers say this "game" is about empowering players to make whatever they want to do.

• LittleBigPlanet: Players will start with Sack Boy, as he is called. You can control his hands with analog sticks and do other functions with the controller -- even SIXAXIS functions. There is a cross media bar-type user interface when making things. You will be able to customize your character and environment fully with everything being made of real world materials. It's not just about placing objects, you can change the look of anything you make.

• LittleBigPlanet: Players can invite other players into their creation and that player can change your world as well. Everything happens in real time with the physics engine. The game plays on your own and communal creativity -- they say this is a big part of Game 3.0. The simple and creative tools will allow users to make tactile and highly-interactive environments -- the big point being, you can make a whole game.

• LittleBigPlanet: As I said, you can bring other players in to play your game. You can grab each other or grab objects in the world and interact with them -- even smack around our buddy a little. The game looks very very polished and is simply amazing. There is no scripting involved and the whole thing is made with simple tools and that are just having fun with physics.

• LittleBigPlanet: Everything in the game you create and lay out. You can have jet packs, and other cool stuff that was displayed across the playable level they showed. The game supports dynamic lighting throughout the world -- it's just simply amazing.

• LittleBigPlanet: You can vandalize and change other people's or your own level as you are inside and "playing" a friends game/environment. After you have created your masterpiece, you can share it with everyone around the world. The world menu will show how many have played your game, you'll get comments, messages, and can see highest rated lists. You will also be able to download other people's games. It's all very unreal and quite impressive.

• LittleBigWorld: It comes later this year to download on the PS Network and Blu-ray disc in 2008.

In closing, this was huge for Sony. This could be the first, real turning point for the PS3. You may not believe me, but when you see just what can be done with home and LittleBigWorld, you will be sold on what is possible with the PS3.

Sony as usual is reactive instead of proactive. This should have been out at launch, not a year after launch. Expect many bugs/lag/abuse issues for the first year. I'm still on track with owning a PS3 in late 08/09 (after they drop the price... now THAT's news I'd like to hear of).

i'm excited, the ps3 is shaping up to be something very cool. i'm excited about loco roco 2. sixaxis strutting its stuff.

my only comment about he individual user spaces: i just bought a sony 55 rear projections tv, i hope i don't have to pay any extra to have it in my personal space. paying for it once was enough. [:

Wow sony this is really great news. I'm about in the 60% range of getting one now. I wanna see how M$ responds to this. Great community aspects. Other than a great social network. we need more ideas of future games.

Very awesome, much more than I had thought it was going to be, I expected a room with stuff on the wall and some trophies. Would have been nice if Sony was ready to launch this in the next few weeks instead of this fall.

Yeah, if that works the way they describe it, it completely kills Xbox Live and Wii's Miis.

Not that what Xbox Live and Mii's can do isn't great and all, but this is obviously better.

They still need to make it happen though. Remember, these are the people that said "4-D".

home: when i hit the little 'x' in the middle of my controller, see whose online, what they're playin, what they've achieved, all without traversing a virtual world. thats my home. i don't want to wander to your virtual apt to see your achievements, i want to click on your name and view them quickly, wihtout being barraged by ads. this can be cool, if done right, but theres so much more money in doing it wrong, that it will be hard for sony to resist.

right now, this is all peaches and cream, and a really cool concept, but a mini MMO doesn't make a gaming console. games do.

this could all be pooped right out if MS introduced something similar to live.com for the xbox. no one talks about live.com. its a shame, b/c its fucking incredible.

do you run vista? do you not love gadgets? you could decorate your live.com page with gaming gadgets, they already exist. they are also super easy to develop for.

i am not a fan of MS software in general, but they did somethng right. so right in fact, that everyone is out to best them, which is not easy to do when your lagging 5+ years behind.

there's a lot of potential here, and for some people, i'm sure this is very appealing. personally, i spend all day in front of a pc, and when i plunk down at the end of the day infront of my console, its all about gaming. find some friends, load something up, and get lost in it. not so much wandering around and socializing.

Same comment on this I put everywhere else. I still don't see this system taking off at 600. All this stuff is basically mindblowing. And the potential for it to become the next big thing is there...at maybe 400. Definately 300.

The big problem still remains one of hubris for Sony. Because this is so great, they may think that this will sell the system at 600, delaying a price drop (and their installed base to fall further behind).

This is actually making me consider buying a PS3. Huge is a good way to describe it. LittleBigWorld looks amazing. Time will tell if they execute the home thing right. Let's hope microtransactions aren't the new fad.

It will be interesting to see how MS responds to this. Xbox Live doesn't look quite obsolete because of this, but definitely seems like it's missing something now...

Okay, this sounds great and exciting and all, and I'm sure this will be a major asset for the PS3. (I'm being totally serious for once.) However, all of this will be useless without a) some worthwhile games for this service to revolve around, b) a community as dedicated as that of Xbox Live, and c) the commitment of Sony to getting this thing off the ground, keeping it updated, and making improvements.

The most important thing to me is still the games. Interfaces should not be the main selling point of a console.

Meh is right. I could really care less for wandering around like I'm playing the Sims to chat with people.
If you want to watch or d/l a movie, you gotta walk to it? I really don't see this as any better than xbox live.

Like Galagabug said, it's all about the games. I like to chat while playing something with a friend, not just sitting around in a virtual room.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

Pretty nifty killer apps for the casually minded. Too bad the system isn't priced for the casually minded. Follow through with how good this COULD be and drop the price on the system (premium, the only one worth mentioning) to $400 and maybe we'll talk Sony.

UnHolly crap!

I cant wait to see how they pull this off but if they do this right, you can be pretty certain this kills xbox live, Miis and Second life.

However before you start bitching about this being "all they have done" let me share some announcements which will soon enough appear here in dtoid, so I wont go too much in details.

-WarHawk coming this year. pure multiplayer, 3 modes of battle, foot soldier, vehicle, plane -integrated- ala battlefield 2.

-Heavenly sword this year too.

-Calling all cars (with the warhawk engine) yep, this year.

-Killzone 2 coming this year and although Ive only seen stills it does look quite a bit like that damn fake trailer we all have seen. side comment as an xbox360 user: Ouch!

And remember this kids, playstation network is FREE, as in free beer.

Oh crap, I hope Ms has something up their sleaves, or is "adios xbox live"

Sony just pwned EA. The home stuff looks like a Sims MMO, but for built in and free and with real world content like game videos etc. and you can use it as a platform to launch in to other games.

It might not be for me, but I really think young teenagers are going to love this. People go crazy for a customized virtual house type thing and the ability to make avatars and dress them up. This does all of that, why would you honestly ever play the sims if you had this.

As for killing Second Life, i doubt it, unless there's e-prostitution in Home, as that's all SL is really for.

This will be really big, they need to can all the lame adverts and just plaster this all over TV. Tons of 60 second ads with different features, like the apartment thing, the communal areas (like cinemas etc.), the trophies/achievements stuff, the simple 'Arcade' games and so on.

Sony needs to make this the reason to buy a PS3 as it will do as much to attract non hardcore gamers as Miis and Wii Sports did.

ok initially i was like "this is really dumb because i could do this all in "real" life"...but I just watched the trailer...and, depending on how in depth it goes, it could be something formidable...kind of like an aforementioned "Sims meets Myspace" networking tool. And the fact that it's free is nice too.

I think this is huge for Sony, but I don't know how huge it is for gaming in general. I wouldn't consider this a system seller. If this came out on Wii (which I own), I'd probably use it for a few days but, eventually, I'd get bored with it (aside from the character creation part - I've always loved making my own peeps).

I think its the fact that it is different that makes it neat. It is like the Wii Mii and XBL had sex, and this was born.
It is like XBL but more innovative and offers more depth and freedom. I will give it a try and see what happens; however, I know for a FACT my girl will love this as she loves the sims and sims type games.

I care more about the online portion of their games than I do about a virtual message board.
If they don't have a lot of great titles that are online, and matchmaking as quick and easy as xbox live, Home won't matter as much for a lot of gamers.

deanhatesmilk: You are probably right but Home is just the icing in the cake, (although having a virtual avatar never hurts specially when it looks like second life and is free) but the thing is: Sony is definetily watching a lot more carefully the online side of things (for good and bad) and thats worrying/exciting because is FREE now that can be a selling point.

Like I posted in the forum, unless this is a required update style download and comes preloaded on all consoles, don't expect it to catch on.

Also, I don't so much mind having ads all over the XBL blades because it's the blades, but the "This is Living" space they've given the user will be cluttered with ads and branded shit. No thanks.

Also, I don't need an avatar to play pool, poker, chess, etc. I just need the game itself. Just like I have built into my MSG'ing client.

This feels like it's strictly for the MySpace/Animal Crossing/Second Life/Sims addicts, and potentially a few more users above and beyond.

I'd still like to see some games Sony. Ancillary features to the base console doesn't make me spend my money. If that was the case, you woulda had me with the BluRay or X360 would've with their HD DVD drive. I want games. So far MS and Nintendo have been listening a lot more than you.

Just a quick note for those people who are saying they don't want to pay the $600 and the like, but may still want to play the exclusives it will have.

You do realize you could take that $400 you're willing to spend on the system, open up a bank account and have it mature around that time, if not a couple months later - take it out and pay for it without any "extra" out of your pocket.... Right?... Or am I the only one who figured this out?

It looks cool but seems pretty useless. I fail to see how this will "kill XBL!". XBL is about playing games with other folks all above the country, this is all about "look at all my virtual crap, ain't it purty". Of course I am the type of person who hates the Sims & Second Life type of "gameplay". So this really isn't made for people like me. Games are a way for me to escape reality, don't try to make my console into a virual world Sony, just kick out some sweet games. meh.

There have beens ads in many games, FEAR, Dues Ex, Terminator 3...lol monster and right now your entire LIFE is and perception is based on and cluttered with ads. Your name in volves DVD = free advertising for them. Your shirt, pants, hat...etc advertising. We as humans tend to shut out advertisements that do not interest us as they just become static background images. Driving anywhere also involes a mega ass load of advertising that is in your face, why would this effect gaming? Y

Basically you cannot look anywhere without seeing some sort of advertisment or thinking about an ad/product in some form like when you shower and look down and start humming the Viagra song...advertising (just joking man, but you get what I am saying)

I dont think in game ads on wall will ruin much; however, if they spam your ass with pop ups in game, or before...like waiting for an ad to load before you play...THEN that is retarded and would defintly pose for crappy game play

Yay for Sony. They've combined the least compelling features of the 360 and Wii and given us....this.

Best case scenario for me is that this entices the people who like this sort of crap into buying PS3's thus a larger install base, all ending with developers getting some exclusive (or decent) games on this thing.

At 7% interest per annum (assuming it were tax free) it would take 6 years for $400 to mature to $600. Even if you could get 25% interest you'd need nearly 2 years.

This doesn't make we want to spend $600 but it's a step in the right direction. It seems like a feature that you get out of it what you put into it and bottom line I would mess around with it a little but wouldn't get to deep into, I made like 4 miis before I got bored of the feature, but for someone else this could be awesome. This is pretty cool. The best thing about it is that they can add an "xbox live guide button" menu thingy to this easily, but xbox live cannot add a virtual world thingy so easily.
So I think this really is a 3d MMO menu. You could probably bring up some menu on that PSP to do things oldschool, with menus, OR you could do it the new way, walking and talking to people. I like this.
