Here's the new Super Mario Galaxy trailer, served fresh from Miyamoto's GDC 2007 presentation. There's some really amazing stuff in here: large bosses, strange puzzles, and extremely creative level design unlike any other game I've ever seen. Miyamoto promised we'd see the game this year when he's convinced that we'll have happy faces throughout the entire gameplay experience.
The trailer came on halfway through the presentation when a few heads were bobbing from sleep deprivation and energized the crowd ... for about five minutes and then back to the Wife-o-meter. Ron said it best: "With the exception of the Mario video, are we at GDC 2005?"

I think it is kind of funny that Nintendo is trying to show how they are really inclusive to all potential gamers...but then they show a clip of Mario Galaxy, which doesn't appear to be the most intuitive game for the Wii really. Maybe I will be wrong when it comes out, but with 360 degree environments and gameplay similar to Mario 64...it's kind of a contradicting statement. I'm sure the game will rock for us hardcore..and I like the message Nintendo is trying to get across, don't get me wrong.
No, see, I look at that trailer and immediately I can see intuitive controls. That dandilion puff is spinning. Or the cursor's zipping Mario through open space. That works out really well in my head.
The game has a really interesting control scheme but it is definitely for the hardcore -- you have moment on the nunchuck, behavior modifiers with the triggers, jumping on the wiimote, and you're pointing at the screen with wand-like movements to do stuff. It's a very hardcore experience -- wives heads will explode if they attempt to take this on.
But isn't that the point? Games for EVERYONE?!?!?!? Everyone on Dtoid complains about the minigame collections on Wii. This one is for all of you. Cooking Mama is for your wives.
seeing this while at E3 '06, I basically shit my pants in amazement, but this video is even more incredible. I may stop hating my wii come end this year
i dont know about this game at all. to me, that doesnt look like mario one bit. just cause the character is jumping and stomping doesnt make it a mario game. their just using the character to sell something that will have me drawing lines to points i want the character to go to. it just doesnt seem fun to me.
Well I'm sure most of us here are pretty hardcore and appreciate having that experience...but what I'm saying is this game isn't inclusive..meaning not everyone can just pick up a controller and get into it. It kind of contradicts their points in the keynote by showing an exclusively hardcore game.
I'd like to see an actual level play thru instead of a bunch of flying from planet to planet clips. The game looks simple enough, but all the camera movement would drive me crazy o.o
I'd rather they try something new and take risks than releasing the same game over and over. I want it, along with many of the other Wii games coming this year like Metroid Prime 3, Disaster, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and the other ones I know I'm forgetting. Personally, it does only look like a Mario game in a small sense, but what is actually there looks great.
Like a few have said, it looks like an awesome game and all, but just doesn't look like it's going to really feel like a Mario game at all. It looks like it may be fun and all, but it's going to feel as out of place as the American SMB2.
I'm not sure about this one. One half of me thinks it looks hella fun and different, but the other half of me just wants paintings and big worlds, and none of this space nonsense!
So the control scheme ain't just putting the Wiimote to your hip and hula dancing.
So the game doesn't play like SMB1 or SMB64.
The point is, it looks positively fun!
The grandma can practice with Wii bowling and upgrade to this if she wants.
The game looks to capture that which the first one tried: something whimsical.
Many Nintendo titles tried this was well. But this one seems to capture it right on. A pure sense of freedom, while keeping clearly defined goals. A literal wide open space with which to play but with fun obstructions here and there.
I definitely want this game. I'll wait until it's final and playable before I pick apart the controls for it. But hey, if people can play WarioWare, they can point with a stick to make Mario pick up a star.
So in these comments we have people who aren't totally open to such a radical change, and some who think it's way too similar to what has already been done
I really don't see the appeal to this game. It looks solid and everything but I seriously don't get excited about it while watching it. But then again I haven't really liked a Mario game since Super Mario World and I pretty much despise platformers in general. So yeah...that may be why.
The well hath runneth dry after Mario Tennis. Are they too afraid to come up with new characters? The game "looks" good, but what part of this game really reminds me of classic NES and SNES Mario? Are they just coming up with game ideas and getting lazy when deciding what to call them? From a marketing standpoint, so many Mario titles is really confusing it it will probably get lost in the 20+ Mario titles. Also, is there any plot to this game? Let me guess, defeat Bowser and rescue the Princess. BTW Super Mario Brothers was a franchise. Using the same character in every game doesn't make it part of the franchise. Example: Mike Tyson's Punchout, Donkey Kong and Super Smash Brothers.
Im Ok: no need to get sarcastic, Everybody knows Nintendo does some cool Mario games theres no doubt in that. (although Im still getting mixed signals from "this looks a lot like Psychonauts", but never mind them, however do play Psychonauts if you've got the chance)
The problem is_ are you willing to buy a console just to play Mario and Mario-Like Games? if the answer is "YES!" then life is great for you and you succeed. However if you (like 70%-80% of the people) bought the Wii because you thought all games were going to be as good as this one (or zelda) or that all games were going to be great with the Wiimote.. er... you probably have a problem coming.
My advice, yeah buy the Wii but keep a Next Gen console handy so you can play with the other big boys too. Theres nothing wrong with some variety. ( is like having 2 wives and no child support payments! yay!)
Which one PS3 ox Xbox 360, Alas after yesterday Im not so sure about that answer anymore.
Let me pick a bit your brains my friends. Remember that little big planet demo? Now imagine how an actual NEXT GEN mario game would look like. (great engine, physics and internet gameplay, internet Co-op maybe) Ouch!
I shouldn't respond, because you think 70-80% of wii owners thought every game would be as good as these. You are either insane or retarded.
Little Big Planet looks gorgeous, but the gameplay... eh. The video I watched didn't look like all that fun. I dont want a game where getting over an orange is difficult. What mario game has ever had co-op? And no need to imagine, there is video right up there^.
And all the people that complain about all the mario games:
They call it marketing. Mario is a synonym for nintendo. Every time a person sees a mario game, they know it's nintendo. You can bet your sweet ass that if MS or Sony had such a recognizable mascot, they'd put it in a ton of their games.
MandleBrush123old: Insane or retarded, well Ill take insane, but since Im in the internet Ill say a bit of both. btw Is that your real picture? I think you may be my grandpa, have you ever been in Tijuana and slept with the entire population while being completely hammered?
Did you were watching the one where the paint was getting dry? yeah that wasnt fun. When you play co-op people ussually make mistakes and you have to help them out, even if lord almighty Nintendo made a co-op online game you can bet your sweet behind it will have some sort of situation like that.
Nope. Sorry but thats mario for Xbox (1) mario Next gen would look quite a bit better, feature some realistic physics some kind of online feature and a telepathic interface because using your hands is for kids .
When I fly I drink and don't eat. I don't think Sony or Xbox needs a mascot. Mascots seem a bit gimmicy, and we all know that Nintendo is the king of gimmics.
Im ok: er.. you are not getting the point at all: take a valium then read.
I meant: is a shame the Wii is not a next gen machine, by looking at the little big world demo you can get an IDEA of how that would be like, BUT eventually we will get one. Wii 2.0 must be in the works as we speak.
And no, Im not implying you should hate mario galaxy, it looks like a great game (although one Im not interested in at all)
And thats it, no matter how much you slice it, Mario Galaxy is not Mario: Next gen, is a nice sequel but is not next gen, is basically mario sunshine with different gameplay and slightly better graphics.
"So how does mario next gen would look and play like?" something like little Mario galaxy meets little bigworld, you see? is cyclical. Thats it! Take it as haterade, drop it, drink it, like it, whatever. Is a comment Thats all.
No one told you at any point to buy ANY other console. No one is saying all games in other consoles are good, of couse some games will be crap in ANY console. To be absolutely clear Im not even mentioning any other console. I quoted an EXAMPLE in a console, but I could have quoted an example in the PC or any other device ok?
"Next gen" is not just a "buzzword" is an actual term and means the "latest most modern" the Wii uses technology that is SIX (6) years old. (except for the Wiimote of course)
No matter how hard we wish it, Mario Galaxy is not next gen, and thats NOT necesarily bad. ok?
I rest my case. And Im going to catch 300, tonight I dine in hell.
Skrulos: Ok, good point, lets not use the "next gen" term then, agree?
It would be sweet to see a Mario Game using the latest technology in Processing and Graphics power as well as broadband internet support instead of technology which is 6 years old or more.
That's fine. However, what difference necessarily would better processing or graphics power deliver? Cleaner textures? Not a requirement for me. In fact, I don't really even care for it. Bells and whistles are eye-catching for the first 2 minutes. After that it fades away and the overall experience takes over. It's probably why I have absolutely no problem playing with any of my older systems to this day.
And broadband internet support? For what exactly? Multiplayer isn't exactly what I look for in a dedicated Mario game. Or are you hoping that Nintendo implements another way of nickel and dime-ing me so that I can download more levels?
Technology is a way to facilitate gaming. Games should drive the technology. I think right now, companies are focusing too much on technology driving games. It's all about what is technologically possible and it's a philosophy I do not agree with. It's the same reason I got burnt on PC gaming.
One of the main reasons I stuck with console gaming was that technology, while always important, took a backseat to the games. It was a more stable marketplace that wasn't driven completely by upgrading equipment to stay on top of the hype lists.
But hey, have fun with it. You're exactly the type of consumer every console manufacturer drools over, the one they can hook with the "newest and greatest" bells and whistles.
Skrulos: I was pretty happy about doing the STFUAJPG thing, but let me see If I get this straight, you are saying you dont care about graphics, physics, multiplayer and that you are perfectly fine with older graphics and older consoles. Ok so then ... why do you want a new console for? to expent more money to play the same games you already had?
However Im a guy who "who drools over new consoles and gimmicks" (like the wiimote per example) and that pretty much describes Anyone who is actually willing to buy a new Console (like Wii per example) Who also cares for things such as better graphics, physics, multiplayer, co-op, which is what you usssually look for in a new console. (And why not Mario multiplayer? Mario 1 was for 2 players remember?) thats why Im wrong all over the place, missing the Gaming true "Illumination" I simply dont get?
No offense, but theres a major flaw in your logic.
If Nintendo is absolutely right about the "tech doesnt matter" motto when why the hell do I have to buy a NEW console from them every 5 years or so? Why didnt they just made the Wiimote for the gamecube and call it a day? I mean "IS all about the games" right?
Back on topic: Yeah Mario Galaxy looks real nice AND fun however is pretty much the same mario with slightly different graphics and a space theme (plus a pretty much ripped off Psychonauts gravity engine)
OK.....heres how it goes, the wii is amazing and this game wii be the best game ever made!
Nintendo is the most original and creative company out there along with the master mind Shigeru Miyamoto(greatest ever). Sony and Microsoft would never be able to think up a game like this because they are not original they didnt think of a motion controlled system they just thought, hmm graphics is what ppl want soo thats what we will give them, WRONG, graphics aren't everything and i have to tell u that graphics is a big part of a game but the gameplay is what is important and the fun and original aspect. Yur saying that the N64 should still be around because the graphics that wii have suck, NO, the games that were released on n64 were revolutionary and are considered the greatest ever, yes graphics and power help but watching and playing a game like this and many others before it (Ocarina of time, mario 64,donkey kong)it gives u a feeling like no other.

Nintendo can't fucking win.
BTW, looks awesome.
I learned my lesson with Mario Sunshine.
This game will be the best game ever. In the world.
This game looks way boss, I know ill pick up a copy when it comes out cuz I <3 my Wii
