While the guys are back at the hotel producing some polished HD video, I just wanted to post a few shakycams from this morning's keynote. The first segment is a wind-up to Nintendo's creative vision; an observation on the industry trends and the impact that best-selling games like Grand Theft Auto have had on the Japanese company. Shiggy reflected on the negative press these games have received without accusation but instead stopped himself in a moment of self-doubt: "Will people accept my games in the future?"

I think the obvious answer is yes, but the greater question is a little more awkward: Would people enjoy the fun of Nintendo games more if they were put into a system with a little more under the hood like the PS3? Many of us content that it is all about the games, but if the Wiimote was a bluetooth PS3 accessory and Nintendo became a games-only publisher like Sega I think consumers would be happier (although perhaps more likely to get shot at). Just my 2 cents.

Got any loose change of your own? Discuss.

The real problem is will anyone accept anything on the wii that isn't a Miyamoto game? Can't say I'm really excited for much coming out...maybe if they announce a phoenix wright or advance wars game...but until then the Miyamoto games are likely going to be the most "acceptable" wii games.

Why should Nintendo put more under the hood if the non-gamer doesn't really care about how powerful it is. They just want to play some shit, whether it looks hot or not.

@ Pistolaero - because of sales pressure. Nintendo is just like any big business -- they need to create revenue. The top selling games were GTA, Halo, etc and they were able to offset that with some innovation with the Wii, but then we're here sitting on our hands until Q4 when Mario Galaxy comes out.

Red Steel is a perfect example of this -- clever concept but it looks awful and turned a lot of people off due to that. The Wii wasn't enough in that case.

You don't need to convince me. I have a hard time going back to play old games now that I have my 360. I know the Wii isn't enough, I was just throwing that out there as a possibility of how Nintendo is looking at things.

@Neiro

Not really defending Red Steel (I think it was half-assed in all the wrong places), but I think it was the gameplay that turned people off, not the visuals. Visually I think it's one of the more stunning titles to be released on the Wii, it's just the sword fighting and lack of visceral-ness that really ruined it for lots of people. I mean come on, there's a frickin' blood covered sword on the front of the box, yet I felt like a parapalegic when I finally got to swing my katana around.

Poor design, that's what we need less of.

The Wii isn't just the Wiimote, it's the concept. It's affordable, which the PS3 will never be. It's focused on the controller, and a Bluetooth addition to the PS3 would never have that kind of focus, or support. Name a single peripheral in all of videogame history (besides the dualshock controller, but that became a standard) that is as supported as the Wii controller is right now. Personally, I think the Wii is the only way this concept would have been accepted.

Nintendo fanboys will accept every piece of crap that has 'Mario' or 'Zelda' written on it.So,Mr.Miyamoto doesn't have to worry about that.

You know that's not true, Tormented (ex. Philips CD-i Zelda games, Mario is Missing, Virtual Boy Mario Tennis, etc.). People just pay attention to such franchises because they've got a great pedigree, but make no mistake, most won't buy it if it's a big let down.

And incidentally, Nintendo's efforts in hardware design cannot be ignored. They're one of the few that even make experiments on that end. And as far as games consoles go, I want them powerful but affordable and preferrably don't consume a huge amount of electricity and generate a great amount of heat. Eventually even a graphics card that can handle a game like Crysis will be made and it won't be as burdened as the most recent graphics cards and creat less heat. That's what I'll wait for and hopefully the PS3 will get such hardware updates (i.e. speed of Blu-Ray disc drive and such) in the future on top of a lower pricing.

I think the graphics problem with Red Steel was that the game was rushed for launch. Seeing what was being done with the Cube at the end of it's lifespan, Wii games can look MUCH better. But because publishers are doing a lot of PS2/PSP to Wii ports right now to make a quick buck, we may not see what the Wii can really do for a while from third parties. The people who are saying "OMG WII GAMES LOOK LIKE THE N64" are frankly just being idiots.

Even though the Wii is third place in the graphics race, plenty of people seem to be buying them, and I've heard dozens and dozens of anecdotes from people who've seen their non-gamer family members pick up a video game for the first time and have an absolute blast. I saw the same thing when I witnessed my mom and dad hiding the DS from each other so they could get dibs on playing Brain Age first. I still play classic arcade games through Gametap all the time. I still play shitty little flash games. Why? Because they're fun. I don't need 7.1 sound and 1080p to enjoy myself. Both those things are cool certainly. But it's like comparing a big budget Hollywood flick to a smaller independent movie. I might not get awesome CGI and rad explosions in the latter, but more often than not I enjoy myself more. Nintendo made a tiny, cheap, and quiet little console to appeal to those people who normally are intimidated by game systems. While that may not make the hardcore gamer happy, that's making non-gamers into new gamers. And if the Wii user base comes even close to DS numbers (which they seem to be on track to doing), we'll get the serious games we're looking for soon enough. Even if they aren't as shiny.

Yeah, I'd just love to have a PS3 and enjoy that Full True HD experience on my Standard Television set (fuck -- wait -- I have a standard television, fuck).

The PS3 is badass.
I can't afford it.
It looks like crap on my TV.
So I bought a Nintendo Wii.

This is the mantra of already half a million people. But it'll only get worse if Blue Ray players get cheaper than the PS3 in the coming years as far as sales are concerned.

So yes, to the people that can afford it and have the equipment to enjoy it, congrats to you sirs, congrats.

Flow was pretty accurate with the sixaxis, I think one of the things he's trying to get across is: the PS3 can (almost) already do what the wii does now. Now; the games made by 1st-party-nintendo, Sony doesn't compete, but that software based, not hardware.

So this might be a glimps of a future nintendo's fate similar to Sega?

Nintendo will be a company in which we think, "Man I was a total Idiot for playing that" in several years. I love how most other gaming sites overmind the fact that nintendo is not that good, does not really innovate, and is the king of lame ideas. Nintendo will not last much longer, gaming used to be for the family then we all got divorces, it's only a matter of time until they take back burner.
