GDC 2007: Mark Rein and Unreal Engine 3 photo

I just got back from a short private briefing with Epic's Mark Rein detailing the ins and outs of Unreal Engine 3. I'll let you know some of the huge points that were hit on:

• Epic is working on something where they will be able to have support for mods on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

• The Unreal Engine 3 is not as expensive as what is being said. Mark said they will work with devs on something that would be financially viable for them.

• Mark said they pushed every corner of the 360 with Gears of War and that without the 512MB of RAM for details, a game like that would have never been on the console.

• Early on in the presentation they showed a new Unreal Engine 3 game that is coming out called Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia for the Xbox 360. They wanted to show the different kinds of things you can do with Unreal. The game was very cartoony and fun -- kind of like a kid's show Diablo

• Epic will release all the tools necessary for Unreal mods and all changes can be made in real time. Overall, the tools looked far more simple and Mark expects a ton of mods to be created because of this. There will even be a book coming out to help makers -- will be available online as well. He said they will release video helpers as well.

W00t first comment.

Umm my views on Unreal 3 Engine well it looks awesome and doesn't have that same UT2003-2004 engine feel where everything mod or game using it feels somewhat the same.

So we'll get that Ghostbusters game as a mod for Gears, please?

Monster Madness is a pretty cool game. I've had my eye on it for awhile and have played it on a few occasions. Controls were a bit meh, but the game looked good and I loved the style.

See this disappoints me.. While Gears' graphics were insanely tight, it sucks know that 1 year into the systems release and it's basically reached it's graphics potential. Other systems kept getting better and better as developers figured out ways to improve things. I'm sure they will figure out small things here and there to imrpove it, but I guess it was just wishful thinking to want even better graphics. Guess I'm just spoiled.. I don't understand why they only went with 512MB RAM anyhow, why not go for a gig at least?

I guess I should rephrase that.. the Unreal Engine 3 has been pushed to the limit.. perhaps another engine will come along with enhanced graphics..

When he said he pushed the limits with that Engine on Gears doesnt mean other games can't improve graphically, nor did he imply that. On many games limits are pushed in which they try and acheive the best they can get for that game and the engine in use.

Furthermore the 360 has a frame buffer that PS3 doesnt have.
To me this would be mean no matter the power of cell or its graphics card.. neither can be met if the memory system can't handle it. I know of 3 games that have been reviewed on PS3 that say frame rates were an issue in busy moments in the game in which the same game on 360 wasn't.

Graphics don't need to get alot better, but what needs to keep improving is game content.. and game playability.. so it doesnt get boring quickly.

"I don't understand why they only went with 512MB RAM anyhow, why not go for a gig at least?"

Because they didn't want it to be in the PS3 price range. It just goes to show you how important RAM really is. I wonder if they could have made Gears look like that if it didn't use 512MB of shared RAM, and used split dedicated RAM like the PS3.

Would Gears have been possible on the PS3?

THe PS3 has the same amount of RAM, but its memory system for the graphics is about the same speed as 360 - with the exception of the 10mb edram built on die to the GPU which is wayyyyy faster then any memory on the PS3..and which isn't on the PS3 GPU at all.

Im just glad 360 has that super fast edram.. I think it helps frame rates tremendously from dropouts..
