GDC 11: Game Gear, Turbo Grafx 16 games coming to 3DS photo

During his GDC 2011 keynote, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the Nintendo 3DS will get both SEGA Game Gear and Turbo Grafx 16 games.

The titles will be available on the 3DS' downloadable content service and will join the Game Boy titles that were already confirmed

That's about all the information provided at this time, but that's pretty dang cool, right?

I want Road Rash from the Game Gear and Neutopia, Blazin Lazers and Bloody Wolf from the TG16 to be released. This will make a very happy Adam.

Oddly enough, I played some Game Gear last night. The screen is pure ass, and pressing the 1 button causes ripples in the screen. At least on my Game Gear.

So maybe the games would be good once you can see them?

Great! Now for the first time in 20 years you will be able to play a Game Gear game on an actual portable system.

I'm down with that. My old Game Gear stopped working from one too many falls down the stairs (I was young, don't judge me) so this could be an interesting trip down memory lane.

Announce Virtual Boy games and you'll have a solid supporter for life.

Come on, it's a no brainer. If anything needs to be downloadable for the 3DS, it's VB games.

@Panda:

Wouldn't you rather have a VB collection cart, the graphics all redone in full color instead of eye-bleed red? That would be ideal!

Don't care about Turbografx-16, since I'd rather get those on the Wii's VC, but having Game Gear games is good news.

Figuring out I could take the power cable from my master system and use it on my game gear was seriously the best day of my childhood life. Anyone who had one would know what i mean :P

@Bob Muir - I think the inclusion of Turbografix is more of a nod to the TurboXpress, which just played T16 games.

That said, why do I get the feeling Nintendo's holding back on adding GBA games just for the sake of playing nice with Sega and NEC here for a bit?

Cool addition all the same, but GBA stuff needs be confirmed at least.

They need to push the Wii Virtual Console games onto the 3DS too. That would make my mouth water.

OH MAN. Ever since the virtual console was announced (on the Wii) I have been WAITING for Game Gear games!

@TSP

I got the feeling that GBA wasn't mentioned because Nintendo wants to pimp some of them on the '3D Classics' section first.

This is still kinda weaksauce in comparison to the psone classics on the psp. Tell me when 64 games are released on the device that aren't full retail price ports. I would prefer ocarina of time for 9.99 instead of 39.99. :s. It will probably never happen though.

I still think Sony's way of doing the PSOne Classics is better than what Nintendo does because I can transfer my PS1 games and saves between my PS3 and PSP. For me, that alone makes it worth re-buying games I already on on CD.

I still have my old Game Gear sitting in a drawer at my parents house. I suddenly feel very old.

@Silent Protagonist

Right? I mean, we all know the GBA's are coming eventually. Why are they teasing us?

Ninja Spirit and I'm happy.

And while I'm sure we'd never see Wonderswan/Color games on the 3DS I can always hope for that too while I'm at it. :)

makes me wish I could transfer the small pile of TG-16 games I've bought on the wii to the 3ds. :-( some of them, especially the shmups, are great for a good quick pick up and play.

Wow. This is pretty cool, especially when you consider that currently, this is the only way, outside of owning an actual GameGear, to play GG games.

I'm excited. And I'll be more excited when they announce the GG exclusive Shinobi games.

Keith Courage? Garbage. Slaughterhouse? In the late 80's(?) it was gore gimmick. And garbage. Legendary Axe 1 and 2? Garbage. Bonk was ok. Demon's crush was ok, but its fucking pinball, c'mon. Blazing Lasers? A mediocre shooter at best. I seriously doubt that there was ever anything released on the Turbografx 16 that I would ever want to play again, nevertheless stand up to the test of time. I can't imagine what they would want to release.
