Talking with Joystiq at GDC, THQ's executive VP of Core Games Danny Bilson (biggest business card ever) has upgraded the expected release date of the next Red Faction game from simply "fiscal 2011" to something a bit more solid -- March 2011.
"The new game takes [Red Faction] to a whole new place, it kind of goes back to the old Red Faction because about 80% of it is underground," he explained. Does this mean we get to create tunnels again? If so, I can certainly dig it. That seemed to be one of the bigger complaints with RF: Guerrilla.
He then goes on to drop the word "structured," which has me feeling uneasy. Crafting your own outlandish tales in the last installment was the best part of the game, in my opinion. It's what made Guerrilla so memorable in a sea of open-world games.
Finally, Bilson comments on why THQ was willing to give away the current game to anyone who bought Darksiders: "Giving away the stock now, on Red Faction, is getting more people exposed to the IP because we're going bigger on Red Faction next time." Nice answer!
Next Red Faction planned for March 2011, focus on franchise's roots [Joystiq]
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

I see what you did there, you clever devil you.
So many games put you in the shoes of the hero, or everyones idol, or some other pedestal. I hope that the next RF will put you back in the work boots of a peon miner, who gets caught up in a movement bigger than he is. That way, you can craft your own personality and motives, rather than being expected to perform crazy tasks by yourself all the time and be scolded when you fuck up.
Anyways, yeah, more emphasis on / better story, please. While still fun, RF:G felt more like a very fun tech demo than an emotionally involved game.

I agree, would be nice to see SR3 soon, or at least get a little info on it. And it better not be "structured!"
Maybe they somehow plan to incorporate the same gameplay in an underground setting. While I'm not sure how they'll do that I really really hope they retain the Guerilla formula. I'd rather have an improved version of the original than the ability to burrow through ground and make tunnels within corridors anyday. Although I wouldn't mind having terrain deformation addded to the Guerrilla gameplay.
