GDC 10: Mount and Blade: Warband impressions photo

Paradox Interactive’s latest Mount and Blade, Warband, might tickle KOEI fans in their special hidden place. The combat in particular has that breezy, disconnected feel of a hollow Dynasty Warriors title. But Warband has its share of differences. Foremost is the choice of its medieval setting, and of course, the class-based MP mode that support up to 64 players in a single match.

I saw Warband earlier this afternoon and left the demo unimpressed. The long and sweeping attacks of either melee class made for several uninspired battles against players participating in the game’s beta. And while I think the tactical options are there to exploit (for example: hold this castle), it’s nigh impossible to get 32 players on the same page without a robust reward system like MAG. And that’s not to mention that the maps felt dead. A lone castle in a sea of green grass was all that I could find. I need, and want, more time with this one. Give it a spin before I can if you're interested.

Oh noes! These horses are being soooo used.

... why Greenpeace isn't attacking games anymore? :( It was so fun when you look at it now, ya' know?

Or maybe the Knights themselves are being used by the horses to please them...

BIGGER OH NOES

I bought the first Mount and Blade when it was on a steam deal last month, and was addicted to it severely for a couple weeks. the combat takes some finesse and the actual game is pretty directionless (as far as I can tell, it doesn't end) but it gives you a medieval world to run around and attempt to take over, and if you can get into that kind of thing, its a blast. Its really more like a game along the lines of Sid Meier's Pirates, in that a lot of it is wandering around and doing whatever you want.

Did you just compare Mount and Blade to Dynasty Warriors? Are you completely, or only totally mentally retarded? Mount and Blade runs a ghetto simulation style combat, where mounted speed is what matters most for doing damage. You generally cut people down in one hit when you're doing it right. And if you don't know what the hell you are doing, it won't make any sense to you at all.

It's more apt to compare the game to a flight simulator than to Dynasty Warriors...

They should have completely changed the combat system for Mount&Blade to play 1% like Dynasty Warrior. Which I don't believe can be the case. Which means you didn't understand how combat works in that game.

Never heard of this game. What platform is this for? Would be nice to have included that in the write up.

It's for PC - frankly, it's only possible on PC, because of the limitless options, customization, community support, and control scheme.

Game is a solid addictive game with a dedicated community. The main point being is that it was originally made independently by a husband and wife team; which is amazing

I've been playing Mount & Blade off and on for about four years now; it's been a long road, but Warband finally looks like a polished, full-featured title. The improvements to the combat system and added depth in the single player game, combined with multiplayer (a finally-answered prayer), lead me to believe I'll be playing it for several more years. If you are at all interested in mounted combat, medieval warfare, etc. you should at least check this title out.

And Mount & Blade is very moddable, my favorite mod being 1866 which converts the entire game into a spaghetti western. Super awesome.

If you already own Mount & Blade, you can use your key to apply for the beta, which can be fun, but like Brad said it can be a little chaotic with 32 players, but we'll have to see how the final product looks.
Warband will also improve on the single player experience, allowing you to build your own empire in the vanilla game.

multiplayer combat is a rush...i'd have to say i pump more adrenaline in a 30 second duel than in a whole game of CS, bc2, or tf2 (maybe not quake)
