GDC 10: First Mass Effect 2 PDLC announced photo

As expected, the Mass Effect 2 universe will continue to expand beyond free downloadable missions. Earlier this afternoon I watched game project director Casey Hudson plow through the game’s first chunk of paid DLC, “Kasumi’s Stolen Memory,” that looks to incorporate a new character, a new SMG, and even a unique way to play this April 6th.

The content, which can be launched at any point during the narrative, can be divided into two themed swathes. The first half is exploration-based. The space Rogue Kasumi is seeking an item of value that is tucked deep in a bent rare-item collector’s vault. To get access, Shepard must travel to the collector’s house party, mingle, and discover where exactly that vault actually is. The second half is an escalating series of battles against mechs and soldiers after discovering the object.

Kasumi is, of course, a recruit for the suicide mission (or even after). And the best part is that she hits with fresh moves -- the hippest being “Shadowcloak,” the space version of a “backstab.” But  more compelling than the addition of a thief and new moves is the fresh art. The rare item collector has a host of historical items in his house and vault, each lovingly crafted by BioWare’s artists. The mansion, even the formal wear are all newly-created assets as well.

During the demo, Hudson said the DLC was “some of the best stuff we’ve done.” I agree. It's a fresh look at something within the Mass Effect universe and a different spin on what can be done. I couldn't get a sense of the pacing during the demo, but I could at least tell the dialogue and action won't leave you feeling blue. Look for it in April.

I'll take it for $5 in a heartbeat - if it's more than that, I'd probably wait for reviews.

I'd prefer a real expansion like Dragon Age, but more content for this masterpiece in any form is fine.

I will do things I am not proud of for more ME2.

I would prefer to pay in money, though.

Paying for dlc? Then what the hell was the cereberus network for?
I mean, I'm still gonna get it, but damn, robbing me money.

The Cerberus Network is for smaller DLCs, I believe. I'll buy it, but it's a bit of a shame because I expected Kasumi to come courtesy of the Cerberus Network. But yeah, sounds awesome.

Couldn't keep getting free DLC forever, but that doesn't bother me! I can't wait to see what the new DLC is and hopefully ME2 will get an expansion like Dragon Age in the future...

After reading the description for the Kasumi mission, I got the feeling that we were literally going to be stealing from the actual Collectors, instead of just a person that collects rare items. Still a day one grab, but oh well, maybe one day I can look forward to seeing what kind of art Harbinger would have around his mansion anyway...

Any word as to whether or not you will have branching dialog options with Kasumi, or will it be another Zaeed (who was cool as hell but I wish I could actually talk to him)?

kitae, should have pointed up :P I was going to re-buy a new copy of the game (ditched the CE after burning out on it) but I doubt I will if it's paid DLC. Not to say it's not worth it, just not re-buy worthy :D

How did you devs manage to live before DLC became the norm? :P

DLC usually perplexes me if it's priced over $5. Most DLC missions for games like Mass Effect are around 30 minutes long, and priced at $10+. For a fantastic game like Mass Effect 2, I'm getting around 30-40 hours of gameplay for around $60, which is a good value - not so much for the DLC: so that's where a lot of consumers take issue with short content priced at about the same rate as say, a full Xbox Live Arcade game.

This is off subject but when are we getting another KoToR game on the consoles? I know The Old Republic looks cool for the PC but I hate MMO's(I think Galaxies did that).

I should also point out I first thought you meant a Collector house party as in THE Collector's where throwing one. I bet Harbinger could make some ridiculous Reaper remixes.

difference between maintaining a revenue stream for a team and contracting out a team for one off projects, maybe?

Not that hearing Kitae's answer would be infinitely more interesting...but, I reckon continued bankroll allows talented teams to stay together longer...

I know Bioware has taken a ribbing over their storylines being somewhat similar, but seriously, "space rogue"? Are we sure that wasn't just name given to the concept of what this Kasumi is supposed to be?

Also, I'm fairly certain my Infiltrator has the Shadowcloak ability already.

All the KOTOR efforts are going into TOR.

I hope this is good. Bioware has a hit/miss record with DLC (especially with the crap that ME1 got). I still have high hopes, because it's not like Bioware isn't a great developer.

Well it has yet to prove, if its the first DLC truly worth buying. For 15€ i expect several hours of gameplay. And i dont think it will be less then 15€. If its arround an hour of gameplay i wont consider this. I would hate to start it, get into it and "bam" finish.

I'm confused. I knew you could play after the suicide mission, but I never thought they'd let you recruit someone afterward. She must be completely optional. And is the 'new way to play' statement referring to her rogue-ish moves?

This is very interesting to me and certainly something that I would want to purchase. Yeah...like most I know I'm broke so I couldn't get this anyway when it launches but as a fan of ME2, I will certainly support them and download when cash frees up. I think this game is amazing and the amount of care Bioware took to make such a great game for us fans should be enough to cough up a few bucks to support their efforts.

so is there a way to play this content after we beat the main story in the game? or do we have to have an old save set aside like the dlc in mass effect 1?
