GDC 10: CryENGINE 3 to be shown in 3D photo

At this point, it's hard to tell what impact 3D will have at GDC 2010. But at least one studio, Crysis developer Crytek, is prepared to blow out our eyeballs with the latest in stereoscopic crap. In an announcement blasted out earlier this afternoon, Crytek revealed that it's presenting on CreENGINE 3's S-3D capabilities at the show, and will also give a demo for "LiveCreate," the dev solution that allows studios to make a game for all three platforms with a single editor.

Sounds great and all -- we like what we've seen thus far with CryENGINE 3. Granted, the disembodied old man's head plays into our opinion, but we all have our biases, right?

3D is a dying FAD, eye strain and limited scope, kill it.

Marketing types sure love the 3D these days. Too bad nobody else cares...

James Cameron thinks the 3d craze is stupid. Me, I would like to welcome our new epileptic overlords!

3D is just a bunch of 2D's on top of one another.

IT'S A LIE.

Yeah, 3d is the next big thing. If I only didn't see Freddie's dead FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS AGO.

@Deadsuo -- To be fair, they're experimenting with newer kinds of 3D for use in home theaters. Still, colour me unimpressed with the whole 3D bandwagon.

@RenegadePanda

Are you suggesting that it's two 2Ds duct taped together?

@Witherbucket

They actually use scotch tape. Budget cuts, y'know?

3d is for mucking maximalist pussies. I live, see, breathe and shit in one dimension, one is already too much for me. I'm meditating daily to practice death, so I could exist beyond space.

bruceleethree: You've obviously not seen a lot of modern 3D stuff. Your loss, it's pretty fucking cool.

@bruceleethree

are you referring specifically to games? Because 3D is rapidly becoming the new standard for action movies, love it or hate it.

3D gaming won't catch on until 120 hz HDTVs are the norm and they develop the hardware for consoles (i think something along those lines was shown off at CDG last year? or maybe more recently). Right now, cryis running in 3D on a pc connected to an HDTV is probably the most visually stunning thing in gaming right now...

God of War devs mentioned going 3D when the hardware became available.
Having just read the recent preview, that would be pretty fucking sweet.

Not a fan of 3D stuff, but eh, it's an extra feature, it's not like I can complain.

People get all confused by the old school 3D, which didn't work very well and never REALLY took off.

However, this new stereoscopic 3D they're using is looking mighty promising, produces some fantastic results without green and red-ifying the colours and having fairly comofrtable glasses.

Sure it sucks for those watching who aren't wearing the glasses, and sure you need a pretty expensive (so far Sony only that i know of) TV, but when i need a new TV (Gonna be a good few years now) I'll be looking at a 3D capable one for sure.

3D > Motion Control.

3D won't get big until the glasses-free 3D TVs improve and come down in price, and that won't happen until everyone that just bought HDTVs is ready to fork out more cash and buy another.
