GDC 10: Balance coming to Dragon Age 'Awakening' photo

As I suspected, Dragon Age: Origins expansion “Awakening” is more Dragon Age. I played the first 20 or so minutes of the expansion at GDC this afternoon, moving my new Gray Warden commander through the Darkspawn-infested Vigil’s Keep and up to a mini-boss fight against a special speech-capable member of the Blight.

I didn’t take the several opportunities to use the new special skills, but I did have a big takeaway from the short demo courtesy of online content producer Fernando Milo: the expansion will be more balanced than the core game. Enemies have been tweaked a bit to prevent manic slaughter rooms and needless deaths. An extension of this is the fact that Warriors and Rogues have been given more oomph in combat because of the new skills, meaning less fleeing from chaotic battle. Nice.

If you’re in the mood for a bit more on the upcoming Origins expansion, feel free to read our recent preview or one of several “Awakening” interviews. But don’t forget to check out the new assets below first.

I was able to play a copy - the new skills are neat (basically variations of stuff you already have - but they finally add an AOE for archer rogues, which is sweet).

By tweaked, I think he meant "made twice as easy". With a Blood Mage at the level you start with in Awakening, you can completely crowd control (nullify) 4 enemies at the start of any given battle. I set my difficulty to "Insane" after the part you did Brad, and never looked back - I think I died three times total in the entire game. DPS Warriors and Rogues being infinitely better (but still no where near Mages) help contribute to the easier difficulty. My tank can slap an enemy for 400+ damage at any given time, and both have godly temporary "invincibility" abilities, which is leaps and bounds better than Origins.

So long story short, if people didn't like how hard Origins was, you'll love Awakening :D.

Pfft, Cone of Cold was more overpowered than any Rogue or Warrior ability. I still love you CoC. Let's not even get into Arcane Warrior...

Did people really find Dragon Age hard? Some battles were challenging at the beginning, like those fucking wolves and bears, but nothing too crazy.

@Thulsa
Cone of Cold followed by your Mage, Wynne, and Morrigan all using stonefist/crushing prison to instant kill-shatter three enemies, followed by everyone using stone prison to CC two more enemies, followed by paralyze to CC three more enemies, followed by Blood Control to CC three more enemies. By that time all your abilities are cooled down.

In Awakening, there's one spell that refreshes ALL your cooldowns instantly, allowing you to do it all over again.

Yep! Sounds about right.

So they are making an easy game easier? That sounds like fun..

The problem with Dragon Age was I think a lot of people tried to play it like a God of War game where you just charge in, and that's where all the moaning forums posts about the game being too hard came from. It worries me that Bioware might have taken those peoples views and thought that's what everyone wanted. I hope the harder difficulty settings still remain a challenge. I personally found the game just about right in terms of challenge on the hardest setting. It wasn't impossible, you just had to think about what to do and when on some of the bigger fights, I'd like that to stay the same.

It's good that Warriors and Rogues are getting made a little better though. They needed to be caught up to the near immortal Mages.

I played through it two times.
As Elemental mage /arcane warrior/ blood mage. Focus was on fire and earth.
It was quite hard, mostly because you had to be very careful not to nuke other party members. I was always at zero money cause i had to buy every single healing pot available.

Second play through as warrior was a cakewalk. rightclick at enemy + wait = win. (well maybe i am exaggerating, but not much)

Yea, but on console you don't have to worry about friendly fire - and I think Fire Mage is one of the worst ones. Ice/Spirit>>>.

The problem with Warriors and Rogues in Origins is they can barely tackle more than one target at a time. With one mage, you can simultaneously disable up to 4 enemies at one time, and AOE them all.

I love how they've been making their hardcore RPG easier and easier since launch, and it was already easier on the consoles in the first place.

I liked the challenge, personally.

@Magnalon, actually friendly fire was in effect on consoles on everything except the easiest difficultly levels.

@Magnalon What if we loved the original game and the way it was balanced?

If you look at normal, it says "friendly fire doesn't do damage" - it just freezes them or knocks them down.

In fact, like Uncharted 2 and Empire Strikes Back, Dragon Age II is the rare sequel that improves upon its already excellent predecessor. bean bags
