GDC 09: Wii Virtual Console Arcade revealed, launched photo

Yep, news is still flowing out of Nintendo's GDC 09 keynote. Nintendo is once again expanding the Wii Virtual Console, this time adding support for arcade titles. Yay! As you might have expected, the new category is already accessible from home, and four games are up for sale:

  • Gaplus (Namco Bandai): 600 Wii Points
  • Mappy (Namco Bandai): 500 Wii Points
  • The Tower Of Druaga (Namco Bandai): 500 Wii Points
  • Starforce (Tecmo): 500 Wii Points

It's also worth mentioning that Space Harrier and Solvalou are on the horizon, but nothing other than "coming soon" was announced. While I personally don't feel the sudden urge to leave my cozy office and go download any of these titles, I am however excited about what games could potentially be in the pipeline.

Are there any arcade games that you're dying to see come to Virtual Console Arcade? I've got one in mind: it starts with an "X" and ends with "-men."

OMG! Zaxxon would be brilliant!!

For me, bring on the Turtles -- the good one from the late 80s/early 90s.

X-Men arcade being good is all in your imagination. Show up at the Baltimore NARP and you can experience its suck for yourself. AvP, on the other hand, is full of awesome.

Look at this. How can six people even play on this? The persons on the extreme sides would be looking at a blurry screen.

I'd like to see all the Ninja Turtles games, The Simpsons, X-Men, and some good 2D fighters. The problem is I'm 99% sure that Nintendo won't add online play for any of these games.

Rush'N'Attack (also known as "Green Beret" to some)?! Wow. I spent a ton of quarters on that game! That would be part of my Wii games collection for sure!

They couldn't add any newer titles?

That kinda cost seems a bit excessive for such old games.

Oh and to all of you wanting Simpsons and X-men? Never gonna happen as the companies that made those 2 games don't have that license anymore which makes me sad.

Great idea, but not exactly a stellar opening line-up. I squandered my youth in arcades and I've never even heard of most of these games. Except for Mappy. Which was not a good game.

Um, arcade version of Donkey Kong for one, instead of the neutered NES version yet again.

Popeye would be nice, too, but that's wishful thinking.

This is something I've been waiting for.

Both X-Men and The Simpsons were made by Konami. Konami was some how able to get the TMNT arcade game on XBLA and the TMNT NES game on VC despite no longer having the TMNT license, so I don't see why they couldn't do the same with X-Men and The Simpsons.

Maybe these were populat arcade games in Japan but otherwise pretty lame line up to open a service with. Also they should really be releasing 5 games for 1 packages or something, paying that much for these games isn't right.

If Marvel has the rights for X-Men (and why wouldn't they?) it should be something we can still wish for. My gawd, I'd die of glee.

There's absolutely no reason Marvel vs. Capcom 2 shouldn't come to the Wii now. It's been confirmed for the PS3 and 360 already, and I think the Classic Controller for the Wii has the best d-pad EVER, so I think I'd buy it on the Wii over the other consoles.

Other than that, X-Men on the Wii would make my head explode while I wept at the same time.

The Tower Of Druaga is the only one I'd give a damn about.

In the meantime, I agree with calls for Outrun, X-Men and Simpsons, but a version of Lucky and Wild would be ripe for the Wii. One controller for moving the car, the other using the Wii-mote to shoot.
