When you're at GDC, you hear sh*t. We do. We have. So this evening we walked around San Francisco and talked about what we've heard this week and what we think is coming up. The topic: portable gaming, with a focus on downloadable games. Listen up, Retail: it's only a matter of time now.
Nick, Conrad and I chat about the GDC buzz around iPhone gaming, the upcoming Nintendo DSi, and a bit about Sony's next portable console, all while dodging crazed skateboarders and giant trashcans realated to Optimus Prime. We're calling it Optimus Grime.
We're trying different things with our format here, so tell us what you think. Also be sure to chime in on the topic at hand in the video. We'd love to hear what you think is going to go down.

Very entertaining. And goddamn, I'm surprised Dale didn't kick Chester's ass for that Weaboo comment. I guess you all really do love each other. How sweet.
I kind of hope the PSP 2 or whatever sucks. Not from a hating Sony perspective but from the perspective of I don't want to have to buy games for 2 portables.
Then shit just gets less portable.
I'm fine with the PSPGo or whatever the hell they're going to call it as long as it comes out next year. That will give me plenty of time to butter up my significant other for yet another substantial gaming related purchase...the DSi is this year's pound of flesh.
She is so going to murder me in my sleep. Probably by using the DSi in a creative manner.
I don't understand the hand-held market's obsession right now with sacrificing ergonomics for portability. The current psp is already an ergo-nightmare for anyone with adult hands. The analog stick might as well be sitting on the bottom of the psp for all the thumb-cramps it gives me. Now they might be thinking of making the next one smaller?!? FAIL.
Props on your professionalism, guys... No, really! Destructoid really is reaching the levels of professionalism seen (sometimes) on the likes of Kotaku and Wired. So, congrats on that, my babies.
Sony already did have a successful launch with one system. The PlayStation 2.
Only reason I would buy ANOTHER DS is the ability to play classic NES and SNES games on it. I think Nintendo screwed the pooch with this, The DS is capable of downloading games from the Wii (Demos namely). Why would it be so difficult to slip a few 8-bit or 16-bit games on there? Oh.. Wait.. No memory! Nintendo HATES memory capable of storing your games on it.
I bought a used touch from a friend, It was cheap, and it's a fun little device, even handy at times. If you have the loot, dude, get one... Some of the games are kinda fun.
Lastly, I wouldn't take any of this seriously. As Dale said they're "Rumors" which means that it may or may not be true (contrary to his sarcastic comment about it being "true"). Wait until they announce, then get excited. I try not to speculate... Especially when it comes to gaming/systems.
Yeah SF is a great city. I think you guys are being a bit too optimistic about a new PSP. Sounds cool, but when you look at Sony's track record things become very scary. And a new portable device from Sony is the least of their worries.
Wow I just don't understand the mentality of a Sony fan. How is making a system less compatible a good thing? The same people all freaked out when Nintendo took out the old GBA slot in the DSi, which had nothing to do with most current DS games. However, Sony can take away your whole fucking PSP library and you all think that's a great idea. Thanks Sony, yeah I want to buy all my games over again.
Plus doesn't a 8GB, and 16GB model seem too small to anyone else? Aren't PSP games up 1.8GB? So that means you can't even fit 5 of those games on the low end model. People freak out at Nintendo for putting out 3 models of the DS in almost 5 years, but its totally fine for Sony to have a new model every year, and now apparently there will be two new "more portable" models of the PSP coming. Why don't they just call it PSPMobile? Now the PlayStation Porttable is even more portable!
5 is probably 4 more than you'd be carrying around if they were UMDs anyway.
Besides, you can load your favorites from your computer/PS3 and keep the rest backed up on an HDD. Pretty much what you can do now with a 1000/2000 PSP and Custom Firmware and a large Memory Stick.
Eliminating the UMD is something they should have done with the 2000 model but probably couldn't because the distribution model wasn't quite acceptable to the masses yet. Now, it is and we get what should have been. Thinner lighter PSP. I might get one to replace my 1000 because of stuck pixels.
If those rumours are true about the PSP Go or whatever, then I am really excited. Backwards-compatibility can die in the fires of hell!! For handhelds at least :P
Good video, fun and informative! Just struggled a little to hear you over the cheery music and city noise :s
The rumoured PSP-GOOOWUHHH Sounds kinda neat (and I would love that Metallica ad campaign), but i'm still saving up for a DSi (and hoping I can still homebrew my Mega Drive games on it)!
To address PEI's concern regarding game sizes and space, that's something that came up in our discussion (but was cut). That was my concern at first, but someone had said most UMD games were pretty small, and didn't use nearly all of the UMD's disc space. Many are maxed out at 600 megs or so; you could theoretically fit quite a few games on an 8 gig or 16 gig storage solution. Also, compression is the bomb!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
and no not up my ass
I got the same message, just click on the video to watch it on youtube.com, worked for me.
Anyways, this new Sony portable console sounds interesting. Though it is rumors, I can't help but imagine if what you guys said indeed are true.
Also, SF looks like a pretty city.
(sorry for double post)

Also, awesome video guys.
Damn that new PSP sounds hot!

...sorry... *smash*
Epic in a can.
I now realise I could never walk around the streets of San Fransisco; I'd be arrested on sight for either looking too scruffy or just plain ugly.
YOU SURE DESTRUCTOID MADE THIS?! (iloveyou)
Also, I looooove SF. Such an entertaining city <3
I love these. More videos please.
I'm not saying that in a bad way. I'm just saying I'm used to videos of someone unboxing Zebra Cakes. Ironic, funny shit.
Also, Supokemon.
