GDC 09: BioWare 'amping' up Mass Effect 2's action photo

Mass Effect wasn’t a competent shooter. Mass Effect 2 could be. In fact, you may even view it as a “shooter RPG.”

The good doctor Ray Muzyka recently spoke at GDC and touched on two big improvements BioWare are cooking up for the sci-fi RPG’s sequel: action and character interactions.

"There's a few bigger buckets of things we're working on,” Muzyka said. “One of them is the intensity of the action, amping that up so people will see this as a shooter RPG … It's going to feel like shooter fans are going to have a great experience…”

“Another category we're working on are the moment to moment interactions, kind of grabbing control of them more, and we'll show that later [in the year] as well."

I checked my shooter expectations at the door with the original Mass Effect. Why? Because it's an RPG. While I welcome improvement with Mass Effect 2, I don't want story or design sacrificed for the sake of action elements. But, hey, maybe I'm just crazy. What do you guys think?

Do want. More action is always welcome, I loved the shooting in the original so this is just icing on the cake.

I'd welcome a tightening of the action dynamics, but not as you said, at the expense of the story and deisgn. The combat/cover system could be tweaked to make it a little more satisfing.

I'd prefer improved Mako turret control and Mako customization.

I do think Mass Effect worked as a competent shooter but no doubt I was there for the story and character developments, but at the same time I really can't stand JRPGs so the "Action" RPGs have to to have the--well, action...so more of that is welcome and it doesn't even have to mean shooting since that wasn't the only way to dispatch enemies in the first game.

@Vhaius
You know the mako controls never bothered me, it's just like driving a Warthog. I'm totally with you on the Mako custimization, it be a good use of the millions of dollars I have at the end of the game with nothing to spend them on.

If it makes the combat better I'm all for it. The combat was really pretty lame and the vehicle sections were just frustrating. The one thing I really hope is that they don't start sacrificing the story to appeal to the gears of war crowd.

The game would be GOTY 2010 even with the old shooting mechanics.

I'm glad to see the combat is being reworked, I got a bit frustrated at times in ME1.
