GDC 08: Spore declares a console war photo

It would seem that only Will Wright can decide the console war, as the versatility of the Spore creation system is put to great use here. The above image is of several buildings that have been adapted by a player to resemble a Wii, a PS3 controller, a GameCube and an Xbox 360.

Certainly cute, but more importantly, it serves to highlight Spore's adept asset creation. Could it be that we're finally close to a game that allows the creations you had intended to make, instead of a poor and shoddy shadow of the golden image that's trapped in your mind? Too many times have I known the frustration of character creation systems that refuse to give me what I want, so if Spore can do things like this, count me in.

I must confess I really haven't been hugely hyped for Spore. Images like the above, however, go some way to providing a remedy for that.

I guess the PS3 will be a whole city in this game.

Spore Trailers Watch those, thank me later.

Don't forget to watch the 14min Demonstration.

After which then you'll be excited about this game!

I haven't been hyped for this game either. Maybe after I find out more about what it is, I can get hyped.

It's something I'd probably want when it hits the sale rack. Although those images look good.

That's crazy you can get that detailed. Hmm. I wonder if the Wii version is gonna suck shit in comparison. I hope not.

Exciting stuff to see how detailed the customization can be. I just hope the game is still fun once you get past the creation portion.

Oh that's cool. I want SPORE and have wanted spore for a very long time. It's been years now... seriously.

I wonder if that means it'll be coming to all those systems (save the GameCube, of course). If so, I sure hope it has system cross-functionality play. Nothing like a quality space war between a PS3 planet and a 360 planet who both get trumped by the tiny innocuous Wii planet.

I hope its not being hyped like Fable. Will Wright seems to think his game is the greatest ever already.

And then user generated content filters were created, and Will Wright saw that it was good.

Screw your content filters. My Spore society will have phallic buildings than Atlantica in The Little Mermaid.

->Sterling: You want a solid thing-maker in a game, get galactic civilizations 2. The ship builder is the sex. You can probably pick it up in for about a tenner. Actually, it's ideal BBL fare.

I like how they have the original design for the PS3 controller up there. Man, I'm really glad I don't play Everyday Shooter with a boomerang.

If I had to guess, it seems the creations have to have at least one axis of symmetry. That's why they choose the PS3 controller instead of the machine--the PS3 itself is anti-symmetric.

Finally we can recreate the console war in a video game! The creatures are all humanoids, the vehicles are the controllers, and buildings are the systems.

wow, so the creature creation software will allow for things that aren't animal looking. this could get really dangerous.

@jerrt: There are several different creation tools aside from creature: building, land vehicles, sea vehicles, air vehicles and spaceships. I might be missing one or two. But I saw some pretty crazy stuff in the building creator during a demo. Like a building made to look like a woman sitting with a bunch of bags at a bus stop.

I'm psyched to explore the universe in the space phase. They apparently capped the planets at 5 million.
