GDC 08: Nintendo reveals plans to start 'Pay and Play' online service photo

In spite of our differences, the one thing I have consistently lavished Nintendo with plaudits for is their rigid stance on online game play, i.e. that it should remain free of charge.  Sadly, it seems Nintendo is a bit more flexible than I originally thought.

At GDC Nintendo has revealed their intentions to institute a system for the Wii entitled "Nintendo WiFi Connection Pay and Play".  The service will require users to subscribe per game in order to play online, though how much it will cost, whether it will be per game or a broad subscription fee, and which games will fall under its purview has yet to be revealed.

Of note is the specific wording used for this service, Nintendo has named it "Pay and Play" rather than "Pay for Play" or "Pay to Play".  The words "Pay and Play" conjure images of people happily being fleeced, while the substitution of the word "to" or "for" paints a far more realistic picture. Yes you can still play the game offline without paying an additional fee, but for a company that has been so adamant about its online gaming policy this seems more than a little hypocritical.

Wii games requiring subscription will have a red mark on the box stating "Pay and Play", which according to Nintendo is to avoid customer confusion.  Unless Nintendo makes some unprecedented epic strides in the quality of online play for the Wii I see the "Pay and Play" logo as an incredibly convenient way to choose which game to leave behind when you can't decide between two.

If they do this MMO-style, like a subscription for certain games, then there’s a small chance it might work. But if they’re trying to pull off something like Xbox Live, they’re going to fail miserably. Sorry, but 512 MB of storage isn’t going to cut it.

It could be that the ordinary casual folks gets ordinary online play with friend codes random matches.
While the adult audience who pays gets the premium deal with voice chat, friend codes, matchmaking and leaderboards.
But I still want to see HDD release on the Wii!
It really needs the ability to update games.

Jesus... the fact that some of you seem to think that Nintendo is going start charging people to play Smash Bros or any other title with an online multiplayer mode astounds me.

THIS IS GOING TO BE EXCLUSIVELY USED FOR SUBSCRIPTION BASED GAMES. Anyone who's played Phantasy Star Online, Everquest, or Final Fantasy XI on a console has already been through the exact same thing. And if it is a subscription based game, it'll be like every other MMO: charged to your card. You're not going to have to put Wii points on your account or anything silly like that.

I hadn't thought about that, but Mxyzptlk is probably right. Remember, Animal Crossing Wii is just down the road, so this is probably to gear up for that black hole which will suck all of my time and (apparently now) dollars.

As long as this doesn't affect Brawl or Mario Kart, I really don't care. I don't know what else Wii has that I would want to play online.

I remember them mentioning that they would allow developers of MMO type games to charge subscription fees way back when they first announce Nintendo WFC. That's probably what this is.

I thought gamers were meant to be well educated bunch.

At no point has Nintendo said this Pay To Play service is replacing anything, it's an ADDITIONAL option for games which would I assume make the most out of a charged service.

If people actually opened their fucking eyes instead of running round like headless chickens, they would see that the existing Nintendo WiFi logo is very much still in existence, which means that the free online service as it is now will remain as an option.

It's funny how people love to jump to conclusions but only jump to the negative conclusions which gives them a chance to bitch.

Why are people complaining? Everyone knows that X Box Live is the benchmark right? And you pay for that right? So now Nintendo are offering a more extensive online service for particular games, and for gamers who are prepared to pay for more online features. Why is this a problem? Okay, this Pay To Play will never compete with X Box Live, but people wanted more from Nintendo online, Nintendo announce something more and then people start bitching.

Fuck you Nintendo. First of all, you release shit games that I have no interest in and actually dumb down the games made for the people that have supported you for the last twenty years (Metroid focused on bullshit combat instead of puzzles and exploration for the Halo crowd? FUCK YOU!!) but then you decide to go and charge for the bullshit and bare fucking bones piece of crap online service you offer? While charging ludicrous amounts for fucking ROMs less than a MB in size?

No. Fuck you. Pay and play? I've been paying for twenty fucking years and it's not worth paying for anymore. You can go fuck yourself and die.

This is a terrible idea from Nintendo. They already fucked their own asses with the stupid online setup they have already with the Wii codes, let alone PAYING to use a shitty service.

I would never pay Nintendo to play online, until they get rid of this stupid code system. OH HAI I HAFF AN IDEAZ NINTENDU! HOW BOUT U DO WHAT SONEE AND MICROHOFT ARE DOEEN!? HOW BOUT U LIEK MAEK IT SO I CAN AKS SOME1 IF I CAN BE BUDEES WIF DEM JUST BI SENDEN VEM A FRIEND REQUESKS!

....Seriously Nintendo, you bit your cock off with your wicked Wii and DS friend code idea. Just stop there.

If this PFP biz is for MMO type subscription games then that's fine, I just know that I won't be paying for it.

All this still leaves the whole hard drive issue up in the air again. Without one pushed out by Nintendo for Wii, online play is never gonna go anywhere it really should be. Sure, DC did the same without a hard drive, but that was bloody years ago. To do online play and content justice, Nintendo still need one.

512mb in Wii is a very insulting slap in gamers and developers faces, not even a 1, 2, 4 or 8gb usb device have they done, which are dirt cheap as flash memory now, and shows greed and lack of thinking on their part. If not a Hard drive, such flash memory would still ease things from Wii, and entice both gamers and developers.

So yeah, as much as I love their games, you still have so much to learn from 360 and Live, Nintendo (and that's coming from a once staunch Nintendo fan. Take heed from 360's best points and build on them. Find out what gamers want in a online service (everybody votes could be used here too) and be reasonable with pricing. Indeed, we should wait for more concrete details on this service, before judging further.

Paying for online play isn't a big deal.

Paying on a per-game basis via subscription is a big deal. It's easy to lose track of how much you're really paying.

Hahahaha...oh, this is going to get really interesting. Honestly, I won't buy games that are pay-and/for/to-play, and I'm sure that I'm not the only person who is this way. Also, c'mon, Nintendo...is it not enough that you continue to charge too much money for a Wii? (There's no way in Hell that it costs anywhere near $249.99 to make.) This is more than a little insulting.

Haha, yeah, I'm gonna give money to a company that has demonstrated it has no idea how the online market works.

Fuck off, Nintendo.

Unless Nintendo does something to actually justify us paying for it's (currently shite) online service then this is going to crash and burn, no way I'll show any interest in it.

Nintendo are ripping the fucking piss right out of us Europe right now with Brawl etc, and this is beginning to make my blood boil - I have no games I play online with Wii, the first will be Brawl if they ever release it here. Infact I barely play the Wii as it is, PS3 has been keeping my attention.

This little rant is going nowhere. Basically I used to be a raging Ninty fanboy, now they're really starting to take us 'hardcore' gamers for a ride and I'm starting to get really fucking pissed off with it.

What do you expect from the big N?

Phase one is nearly complete = Push Wiis to as many casuals as possible

Phase two = milk them for all its worth by allowing 3rd parties to release mostly subpar and crappy games

Phase three = add more salt and insult to the injury by charging them further to play online for THOSE crappy games!!

I'm so glad i got a PC for x<700 dollars that can play all the games i need online at great speed, FOR FREE and stayed out of this gens consoles.

I've read it on other websites, basically this means that a game with an orange WFC logo will have DLC.

Listen to Mxy and Zardoz, people.

My guess is Pay and Play will not affect any of the current online services on the Wii, limited as they may be. So Pay and Play wont hurt anything.

What it might help is the complete lack of MMORPGs on the Wii. Like Wedge said, this service has a lot to do with Monster Hunter 3 coming to the Wii. I'm guessing that is the only type of game anyone, even Nintendo, would have the balls to try and charge people a monthly service to play. So Pay and Play will likely just be for MMORPG's or at worst DLC, like for the upcoming Wii port of Rock Band. DLC is nothing to complain about.

This Pay and Play announcement is also an indicator that a Wii hard drive is in the works, another reason to smile.

SO START SMILING, MOTHER FUCKERS.

Geez, I wish I could see what makes this unassuming, fun white box beside my 360 so awful.
