GDC 08: Insomniac's Nocturnal to lend PS3 programmers a helping hand photo

We already love their games, and they've shown themselves as capable Rock Stars, but now Insomniac is looking to add the word "mentor" to their developer's resume. Their ambitious new Nocturnal site plans to be a Brain Trust of sorts, where as engine director Mike Acton puts it, is a winning combination for all:

"We see Nocturnal as a long-term project that may be valuable for those who want to develop similar technology as us, but without the same effort we needed. We also believe Nocturnal may be valuable for our fans to gain insight to our production processes, while communicating our ideas with a larger group gives us the opportunity to generate feedback on our approaches and ultimately improve them."

As you can see from the quote above, Nocturnal is Insomniac's personal contribution to those who are looking to streamline their own PS3 development process. By sharing their own research and winning code, I'd say that amounts to a pretty bold step of their own. Judging by the news we've gathered thus far, this year's GDC is very much looking like things are on the up and up for Sony. Let's hope that they continue to build on this momentum.

oh you know ea will use that excuse for years to come as they don't like to learn what everybody already knows ,EVEN US. props to insomniac. maybe capcom will get rid off those mandatory installs or keep them under 500mbytes. but their are alot of stubborn developers out there who won't listen, we know it. but still props to insomniac for sharing of knowledge and we should see some great things for years to come. now if we could get that home and in-game xmb info the week will be a good one. ps3 =under dog to ps3= supremacy. good sh!t. #1_in_the_hood_G!!

oh man, insomniac is just a shining example of an awesome developer. this sort of open communication can only be good for the game industry and the quality of games coming out.

While they may not have dropped any announcements for huge games or in-game XMB (even though they need to get on that), this and PhyreEngine are really going to give the PS3 a boost, I think. One of the big issues that has been holding it back is it's difficulty to develop for, and with these new programs, things can only get better.

This is really cool of them. Insomniac is a quality publisher and will play a heavy role in my eventual decision to purchase a PS3.

Any co-operation between developers can only be good for the Playstation and the industry in general.
