GDC 08: Conspiracy uncovered, Destructoid mascot ripped off photo

Okay, so this isn't as much a GDC news item as it is a heads up; unfortunately, non-disclosure agreements prevent us from giving you the good stuff. But for now, it seems that Destructoid's iconic logo and mascot has become popular enough to rip off.

This morning, Chad, Nick, and I were on our way to a morning meeting when we encountered the above flyer posted on a pole. This Maldroid performance advertisement features a suited man in a robot helmet, and I'm sure you'll agree the overall look is similar enough to our beloved leader's attire to raise our eyebrows.

I'd like to think that the guy on this flyer is just a really big fan of Destructoid, but the band's Web page and MySpace page don't give any indication of that.

What do you think? Is this a rip-off of our revered robot?

Isn't the D-toid robot an homage to an old school toy, like this one?

The letters OID. Check.

Suit. Check.

Robot Helmet, nearly spot on. Check.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

Well, this flyer wouldn’t be the first one (see here — BahamutZero found that in the NYC subway), but this one is a lot closer than the one in the picture I took. Piracy lawsuit...someone call the RIAA!

@Neonie: The helmet and suit was Niero’s creation; Phist just designed the Bomberman Live character.

it is a tough call... it isn't like dtoid invented that robot, or the concept of wearing a suit (lots of bands wear suits ironically). it seems just as possible that they just picked it up spontaneously without being influenced

then again their album cover is just a nirvana album with the robot head super-imposed... doesn't really help their credibility

LOL, sorry couldn't resist. Seriously though, shit needs to hit the fan for these guys ripping off the mascot.

@Murder64: Yeah, but a real person putting on a metal robot helmet and a suit? Not so much.

Yeah ... the robot itself is licensed from the original toy. Wearing a helmet and suit and essentially being Niero was all Niero's doing.

Fuck these guys.

You guys can't possibly really give a fuck if some shitty garage band has an idiot dressed up that is similar to the idiot you dressed up.

They are nobody's who prolly actually have less money than D'toid anyways. I would be more pissed and willing to sue if they had someone on the front who had Jim's sweet sideburns, and signature I'm enjoying this dump I'm taking look.

Just think, they are obviously dumb if they can't think up anything for them selves. Still they should steal ideas like that PHONE EM UP!

I'm falling on the side of 'just coincidence'. The Dtoid mascot is the robot, not a robot in a suit. You could argue the Dtoid robot is a rip. Shit happens.

I've seen plenty of bands do mixtures with these two ideas (robots, and suits) and a few have done them together.

I actually drew up a flyer with this style of robot 2 or 3 years ago - it seems to be extremely popular among certain genres.

No offense to Dtoid, but I'd be surprised to find out they ripped you off.

Is this part of the clue to what Chad's blog was about?? Its a new version of bomberman live??

Oh and this is clearly a rip, I mean who comes up with robot by themselves??

Mmmkay. This is my big thing here.

Weren't we just talking about how stupid getting sue-happy can get with those kids from Texas going after Microsoft?

I feel like we should be the bigger guy here, Maybe introduce them to the site and be all like "So I noticed you're a robot in a suit.... I just so happen to be a robot in a suit too."

Or, even better. Get a bunch of D-toiders to show up at one of the shows dressed up in the Suited Robot Costume and raise awareness. Bonus points if you get up on stage and sabotage the show.

Seem odd to anyone else that the website claiming to be ripped off would advertise the alleged thieves by giving their myspace and website? Maybe D-toid has something to do with this afterall

Well the "-oid" part is pretty trippy, but apparently, these guys have been around since 2006 (Wiki says 2005, but then says that they were founded in '06). Their first album seems to be "Malfunction" back in '06 and they don't seem to be selling their album anywhere other than on their site. There's a copy of the EP on eBay, but that's saying that the album came out in '07, not '06. So it's looking pretty weird right now.. I wish I could get a source other than Wiki on this, but I dun seem to have one yet... But the likeness is a bit too similar...

Don't worry eh, shoop'd nirvana cover should get them sued by Courtney Love.

Of course this is assuming they actually enjoy enough success to be seen, which i doubt.
